They're pretty solid laptops, but expensive. The rest of their lineup is shit though.

Yep, 2015 15" rMBP with dGPU, the last good MacBook made by Apple since 2016 models are literally cancer inducing.

Yeah, rMPB 15'. It's meh all around, okay for light dev/media shit, bad for fun. If I didn't feel like throwing $3200 further down the drain, I'd install a sane distro.

Yes, a 2006 Core 2 Duo white MacBook still rocking Snow Leopard

The thing is trashed, the display has lost all brightness and the fan is failing. Still it has crazy features that newer mac can only dream about

>USB ports and many other ports
>DVD-R drive
>Replaceable battery
>Replaceable disk drive
>MagSafeā„¢ connector
>An IR receiver for the bundled remote control

The thing was very good for it's time with much better battery life than contemporary laptops. It had it's flaws but all in all it was a very comfy UNIX based graphical laptop with a nice OS and nice software. I don't use it any more, too old and slow with too little memory, my Linux based laptop is better in everything.

Back then Apple wasn't all trash. The new Macs are shit though, software wise, hardware wise, price wise and the Mac users are annoying.
>>

No, they are all glued up.

In 2006 MacBook you just needed a coin to replace the battery. With 2 standard screws you could quickly add RAM and change the drive unit (both impossible in the new MacBooks).

Not to mention the 2006 MacBook had a proper keyboard with a full key travel unlike the shit that Apple is doing now.
>>
Yeah, it's essential for work, because another options for doing job right are windows with terminal ports from gnee+linups or gnu+lineeps itself.

I'm considering replacing the battery to keep it going since the bastard only lasts about half an hour to 45min when using chrome with a bunch of tabs and stuff. I had to have the logic board replaced and apple store told me nothing was wrong with the battery so IDK. Other than that I've gotten quite a bit of use out of it, it's accomplished what I wanted it for, though I can't see myself ever buying a new Mac in the future at this rate unless I needed some piece of OSX only software for work.

Not much right now, since I need to make space for one. They look nice and were decently powerful for something that size. I love how the inside is set up to minimize space, and how easy it is to pull it apart. The CPU is kind of slow, so I'm going to try and drop in a dual 550 CPU once I get the time.

2011 15" MBP

Has done the job pretty decently so far if you don't count when the motherboard failed (which my insurance covered) it's been pretty good. Replaceable HDD and RAM means I've replaced both. The GPU is a bit asthmatic, but I don't post on /v/ so it didn't become an issue until I started doing heavy GPGPU compute stuff and even then I just did the sensible thing and built a desktop for that work.

It's not like that's a problem when you can still easily remove the things with a putty knife. They didn't even move to glue straight away, the 2008-2011 models had their batteries held in place with screws and it wasn't until the 2012 when they started using glue.

At the moment? 11 Macs. But most of those are classic Power Macs (some I need to sell).

My main work computer is a 2011 MBP i7 16gb 500gb SSD. Apple did great things while Jobs was running the show, and I really hate that they're drifting now because I love my MBP and I would not buy the current one.

There's no defending it, at this point anyway. When it came out it was amazing, people could barely build a similar raw specced machine for less. For the first time, a Mac had more powerful hardware for less than a custom build. Of course 3 years later, with decreased component pricing that's not the case any more, yet the Mac Pro remains absurdly high even though its had no refresh for over 3 years. I hope they do something decent like a dual Titan X thing with some wacky Xeon.

I've used Macs since my first semester of university. Here's my Mac heritage:

2002 iMac (lamp-style), 700 MHz G4
2003-ish PowerBook G4, 1000MHz IIRC
2006-ish Mac Mini (Intel)
2010-ish 17" Macbook Pro
late 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro

They have all been great except that G4 PowerBook, what a piece of crap design that was. And it was by far the most expensive.

It's odd that after Jobs died that they started doing this. Because he was into having a locked down system that only apple could fix. My late 2011 Macbook pro is only alive because I could change the battery and the ram. I would never buy the new macbooks. I need something that is fixable...
>>
>>57830121
Jobs wasn't that anal. With the right tools, most older macs could be serviced, they just wanted apple approved techs to be able to do it...now even apple techs hate it.

I learned computer repair on several old big box macs. They weren't too hard to service. Even iMacs could be easily upgraded with one or two screws to open up a panel, up till recently.

>>
>>57830251
They are trying to make disposable computers.
They also want people to spend as much as possible, since you have to anticipate your ram needs when you order the computer. You can't upgrade them, I bet soon they'll only have SSDs that are soldered to the logic board.

Was hoping there'd be refreshed Air with retina and Skylake/Kaby Lake this year, or at worst I'd just get a new 13" rMBP. Unfortunately they managed to fuck up both. They killed the Air and the rMBP got the retarded new keyboard.

See, the only reason I would buy a macbook over some other laptop is the trackpad.

Those things are pretty ok. OSX is a shitty OS without the gestures.
>>
>>57837409

The only reason to buy one is literally macOS. That's the whole point of a Mac. Tailored software for near identical machines and a very cohesive ecosystem of products. I think people miss this very, very simple point. Slap Windows or Linux on it and its absolutely worthless and I'd rather use a ThinkPad.
>>
>>57837435
The thing is hackintosh works almost perfectly on quite a few setups, so it's not even that much of a reason.

Hell from what I read a few people here use t420s with it, and I'm inclined to think el capitan at least works fine, but really I doubt that trackpad can do shit.
>>
Yup, 2011 Macbook Pro. Replaced it with a Thinkpad X230 because I wanted a beefier CPU and a laptop that weighs less.

MacOS is by far the best OS for laptops, it's a shame that makes some retarded decisions every once in a while. Been thinking about buying a refurbed Macbook Pro from 2015 or 2014, the price increase on the 2016 Macbook Pros isn't justified in any way other than "muh thinner and lighter"

Was under $350 for laptop, SSD, ram, extra batteries...

Pretty goat imo

There's a difference between boasting about being rich and laughing at poor people doing the whole sour grapes thing because they can't afford something. Macfags do the latter, not the former.
>>
do you guys think it'd be worth picking up a used macbook and installing a linux distro (i'm thinking antergos or manjaro)
>>
>>57840304
No, because saying something is too expensive is not the same as saying "this is overpriced", which is what macfags generally react to.
>>
>>57828863
There are a few.

Can anyone reliably tell the difference?

Do you really think anyone is actually going to say that they can't afford something at the same time as they say they think it's overpriced? If they genuinely can't afford that thing they will out of pride leave it out or just lie about it.

I'm planning to get one.

All I want out of a laptop it's to look good when I go to a client's office or a freelance client's place to show my software development and look "professional".

In the outside nothing beats the beauty and futuristic looks of a macbook 13".

Am I retard for buying one despite knowing I can't even edit a 4k video?

You can't? Because the MacBook Pro definitely can.

Not really seeing how there aren't really any laptops anyone in their right mind would consider practical that can edit 4k video

this should be obvious to anyone that understand Intel CPU updates work. Most of the new Cores simply have improved encoding blocks. Literally the only difference between Skylake and Kaby Lake.
>>
>>57840847
I'm not even sure if that was a mactoddler, the sentence makes no sense
>>
>>57840875
You realize that's in ProRes, right? It's not using a codec hardware accelerator.

To any technology competent person it's literally a symbol of gullibility and technology illiteracy.

Was in charge of disposing of some old computers at work. Asked if I could have it. Most of the other computers were shitty old Dells, but there was a pretty cool '90s HP server with hotswappable HDDs on the front. Thing weighed a fuckton, probably more than my rather large desktop and Power Mac combined.

Oh wow, I am watching that right now.

Also, same here, I work with Windows 7, 10, Arch, Ubuntu and some other linux distros, Mac OS, iOS and Android.

I did some blackberry stuff but they're not really in use anywhere.
