Why someone would have a Windows Phone device in 2016?

Used to use one... Final nail in the coffin was how they first promised that all WP8 devices were going to get Windows 10, then then they dropped all the low end devices and finally anything older than the X30-series, including really expensive devices like the 1020.

I will admit that I genuinely like the camera of my 920 and the UI was smooth, but good grief was the selection of third party apps terrible along with support for third party peripherals like Moga gamepads. The thing that pissed me most about how Microsoft backed out of it's promise relating to Windows 10 was the way they did it. You'd think they'd be clear about it, but they went pretty much completely radio silent on the topic at some point, then almost as stealthily as possible they announced the reduction in the support list, which included dropping phones that were already getting insider builds.

If you didn't run an insider build on your device the only way you were going to notice all of this was if you installed the "Can I get Windows 10 on my WP8 device" app, ran it only to get the "Dunno, check online" result, checked online only to find out you need to install the app and finally read up on forums that they'd dropped your device from the list of supported devices.

The UI is more functional for the use of a smartphone. Big tiles that display information are much more intuitive than icons, which are better for computer operating systems to access with a mouse pointer.

It's just not "pretty" and people aren't used to it, like yourself. Funny thing about functionality is that people shy away from it if they're used to something else, even if it's less functional.

Pretty good, better than 8. I was on the fast insider for ages but when it went stable I just started using that instead since updates take quite a while and it got annoying.

Battery life is great, I mostly have battery saver on all the time since I only use the phone for calls/text/email and nothing else other than sometimes wifi & web browsing and only have to charge it a couple of times a week max usually.

The ui and its keyboard are one of the main points why anyone would use a windows phone. After using a windows phone the ui is probably one fo the best phone uis I ever used. The keyboard is just godly. I don't know what kind of botnet it has but it knows what I want to write before I write it. Plus swype or whatever is awesome. However now I use a shitdroid like everyone else because no apps.

Using a 950xl. The insider updated fix a lot of the issues. Continuum is decent, and I could see it being very useful for companies that already have a VDI setup.

Elaborate. Wouldn't a generic dell thin client fit a such usage scenario better? Seems it would just be a hassle that in the end would be more expensive since hardware designed for enterprises tend to allow end user service.

From a cost point, no, not really. If I have a VDI deployment, and have to issue phones anyway, it becomes a cost savings. The 950xl is retailing for $499. Last I looked, VDI terminals / thin clients were about $400 each. And an enterprise isn't going to issue a cheap chink phone. If you have an enterprise purchase agreement, the 950 is $225.

Also, enterprise gear is set and forget. If it breaks replace it. The employees time should be spent working, not fucking around with their tech stuff.

Even for the IT staff, unfortunately.

Posting from a Lumia 830 here, on WP 8.1. My first smartphone was a Windows Phone, so I still have a stupid sentimental attachment to it. I love the minimalism of the UI, and I find the OS pretty smooth and intuitive. Works absolutely fine for me.

W10M here. I also use a Galaxy A5 2016: lags scrolling through web pages, any app or list. I really miss the trackpoint on the keyboard. Current year and the play store still force closes. The only good thing about this is that apps open fast (black player is so much faster than any other music player on windows, including toolbar) and there are much more apps.

Trying to decide between android an iPhone for my next phone.

iPhone seems better but more restrictive.

I'm upset with the vicious cycle of no apps (no one makes apps for win phones cause no one uses win phones cause no one makes apps for...) but only for everyone else's sake. I don't care about the missing apps for my own phone because they're nothing I'd use anyway. Snapchat is worthless to me, but I recognize that their refusal to have a winphone app is probably one of the biggest blockers.

My main worry is that MS is gonna give up on Windows Mobile and just leave us in the cold one day.

Any recommendations for an upgrade? Can't seem to find any WP in my country. Android and Apples dominates the market here. My HTC HD 7 is almost dying. :(

Lumia 630 here, feels like shit being left out of the WM10 party :(

+ Battery life is amazing
+ All apps (all 3 of them) are smooth even on the low end devices
+ So cheap I won't feel bad if I break it
+ Which I never will, because this thing just refuses to break
- Dreadful camera, but I hear the newer gens (or higher end models) aren't bad
- Task switching is awful, going back to the previous app is never snappy
- IE/Edge crashes on media intensive websites (Facebook / Tumblr) and there's just no way to avoid it

If they have been updated or use the awful silverlight framework, yes.
WP7 and WP8 are two completely different systems though. WP7 is based off Windows Mobile whereas WP8 is based on desktop Windows.

The problem is with Microsoft creating one framework today and deprecating another tomorrow.
If you download Visual Studio with the Windows SDK for making a "Modern" windows app (or a WP app) you have to choose between:
- WP 7 (Which doesn't work on WP8)
- WP 7 Silverlight (Which should work on WP8)
- WP 8 (Which works on WP10)
- WP 8 Silverlight (which IIRC doesn't)
- UW (Universal Windows) 8 (which is a shared library + WP8 + Desktop 8)
- WP 8.1 (Way different architecture than WP8, trust me)
- UW 8.1 (like UW8, but with the different arch)
- UW 10 (finally, ONE project for everything)

The architecture and available libraries for every framework is different and not compatible. If you find a WP8 library it most likely won't work on UW8.1 or UW10.

It should show how fucking clueless they are about how to make a stable and mature environment considering we're already at the third "Universal" iteration.

Meanwhile you can make Android apps with the latest Android SDK and make them compile so that they work even on Gingerbread (by just turning off the incompatible APIs and not using them for vital stuff) which is like 10 major versions back Nougat (and vice-versa, run Gingerbread apps on Nougat)

I had a Lumia 950, guess what happened. and I had only one complaint; the lack of apps. Though there isnt much MS can do about that, I think they made a porting tool or whatever, but idk what happened to it.

Phone still works tho, with continuum.

I switched to a Nexus 6P, but I got some usb-c cables and a free displaydock (single USB-C to 3X USB2.0, HDMI, and displayport.) out of the 950, so thats good?

Fuuuuck, I know this feel all too well. I was on the same boat as you. Fortunately I managed to get my money back since my GPS kept disconnecting when I was recording my bike rides. I blame the 512 MB RAM. Then my mom bought a 640 XL and gave me her 735. I feel your pain anon. the 630 is a comfy phone otherwise though.

I have a Lumia 930, worst decision. Even after the updates it's still the buggiest phone I've owned. It constantly deleted messages, crashes apps, displays the wrong music playing, if the music app opens at all, battery life has always been shit, runs hot as fuck, turns off randomly, doesn't receive phone calls half the time, the alarm doesn't go off half the time, I can record videos but not sound with it, therefor also my loudspeaker function doesn't work. It's just fucked.
