I just do some color tweaking, while trying to reduce a bit of the contrast and balancing out shadows and highlights. I try not to go too far with it though. No actual artsy filter effects or whatever, just general development.

TFTcentral, Hardware.info etc. Input lag, response time and refresh rate are you main three things to worry about if you want a good monitor to play competitively.

Yes if the monitor performs up to spec. "2ms response" doesn't mean anything without a specified measurement criteria. G2G? B2B? How was it tested? Any overshoot or undershoot? Uniform transition across the panel? And so on. That also leaves out input lag which is very important for games. It's why I recommend reading reviews because manufacturer specs are misleading, inconclusive and sometimes falsified or specified only under ideal conditions. And believing anyone here at face value is a worse idea than checking what manufacturers tell. I don't have specific models to recommend in your budget.

Your budget is fine. It's just that I haven't been in a market for a monitor within that budget myself so I only have monitors around and above twice the price to recommend. You don't have to spend more than your maximum is right now to get really nice performing monitors. Point is to use that budget wisely on a product that is good and understand what makes it good is how you find good shit. Asus MG248Q seems alright from a quick check around the web. Because Apple tries to make things consistent with their UX. You can drag things and expect them to just werk™ e.g. dragging an albums from iTunes to a folder will copy the files to that folder.
It also looks nice at all times, unlike Windows which looks like shit as soon as you open a window.
