Was 2006 - 2009 the golden age of the internet?

Here's why:

>Almost not social media
>Internet forums at its peak
>Good old YouTube
>Age of MSN Messenger
>Very little smartphone usage
>More affordable broadband connections

At the start of the 2010s, everything started going to shit.

So, this is why I think 2006 - 2009 was the best internet period of time.

Hi, SSC. Nice to see you here as well.
>>
Oh my good lord, /g/ really is jerk happy over faggot internet psuedo-nostalgia isn't it?

-you didn't use social media then or now.
-Internet forums are fucking shit because of butthurt single admins that can ruin 10000+ users in the worst possible way by censoring history about it because it's posted on their own site. Web consolidation in your pic was the best thing to happen to the internet because you can't get butthurt-banned over irrelevant shit.
-old youtube was shit. According to your bullshit anti-web-consolidation, right now is best for youtube since there are more individuals who essentially make their own TV channel. Youtube back then was just news organizations uploading bits of their own stuff in an attempt to get you to watch their real tv show. If you want "a wild west where people make their own shit", you should like youtube now, but you don't because you're a nostalgiashit.
-MSN messenger was shit.
-Smartphones are great for business, remember paying for a seperate 3G stick or wwan on your laptop each month? wi-fi tethering. remember shitty flip phone java "apps"?
-Internet is cheaper today and fiber is available in more areas.

>At the start of 2010s
Usenet shits disagree with you, along with muh eternal september shits, and there will also be the 2007 shits, and there will also be someone saying each and every year. Why is this? Because that was the year they grew up. You grew up in 2010 and started judging things for what they were the whole time.
>>
>>57810210
>-you didn't use social media then or now.

Internet forums are social media. So were web rings.

>you can't get butthurt-banned over irrelevant shit.

lel

Also all the rest of this post stinks of someone who spends too much time online as a consumer of content rather than a contributor or creator of content.

And yes, this discussion is creation of content. Watching the Markiplier "TV" channel is just consumption of content.
>>
>>57810210

Now let's forget all of the above for a moment and pretend that your shitty claim of some year ranges are correct or for that matter anyone else's are.

-Even if you are completely right about what you say, there is NOTHING you can do about this except whine like a little bitch. Stop wasting everyone's time making this fucking shit thread every day and migrate to some obscure irc or bbs circlejerk full of "good people" so you can jerk off and still pretend it's this year every day by limiting yourself. You accomplish NOTHING with these circlejerks.

-Just because you showed up first, does not mean you get to decide what the internet is about. This is REALLY FUCKING HARD for petrified usenet turds to understand. "Well I was butt diddling some random stranger about the weather almost 40 years ago so nobody else should get to talk about the news in any format because the news isn't whatever weather joke I made to some stranger four decades ago". Are you for fucking real?

-You are most likely complaining about this because it is your failure to get any type of income from the technology field, or you know you are just a failure in general and it's finally time where you're expected to support yourself but you're still a manchild. Pining for days when you weren't yet a loser is not the fault of the internet.

-Nostalgia is cancer which only selectively removes the bad over time creating this psuedo perfect "golden era" which didn't really exist. Did you know google has a feature where you can search by date? go put in only by 1999 or 2007 and install a browser plugin that drops css and call your own bluff. But you won't do this because you know the thing you're pining for has been made up by yourself and doesn't really exist.

Try this one on for size:
It's about the content, not the way it's delivered. Who cares fuck all about web 2.0 bullshit, that's just the delivery system. The quality of content has fallen off a fucking cliff. Everyone is meming it up for karma or sharing pictures of their cats for likes. News agencies are only concerned about getting the story out first via their big high-tech platforms instead of actually fact checking anything.

The quality of the internet just plain sucks. There are very few honest resources left. Everyone has some ulterior motive now rather than just creating content for people to enjoy.

1998-2006 was the golden age, when having a presence on the net meant either being active on forums or building your own personal web site. I loved the creativity of it. Now everyone just has a facebook page and that's it.

2006-10 started the transition to social media and smartphones, and the net getting flooded with normies.

2010+ is web development being controlled by idiot hipsters and their javascript toolchains (including javascript toolchain managers that make it easier to install and manage your javascript dependencies even though 3 of them combined is already fatal), and the death of desktop web.

I dread what the 2020s will bring; not unless we finally switch to optical computing that can get Moore's law back on track.

>>57812302
It was the same the entire time, you simply grew up and changed.

Similar phenomenon happens with films, books, any media, etc. You can actually go back and watch it, which is when you hear people finally have to answer to 20-40 year old wrong memories, "wow I didn't remember how shit this was". they might have been 5 years old at the time.

The reason why I hate this "golden era" shit is that it's really hard or impossible to go back and get all the details of the "era", like how the connection would have been shit, along with the server sending it to you. not to mention the browser, or how every browser would render things differently. you could also pick up a period era device for pennies on the thousands it cost which is also being conveniently left out.

Best example is how networking switches have retroactively erased memories of hubs which were complete shit. You see retro shits hooking up their dumpster finds to a switch (ending up a broadband cable or dsl) and then see this weird paragraph about how it was better then.

Even if true, what does it matter if the answers are miles ahead of ExpertSexChange and all of SE's other predecessors in quality? If what you dislike about 2016 Web is that it doesn't feel like the weird Web of the late '90s, that's fair, but don't say it isn't much more useful.

Sorry about this. I was "trolling", for old times' sake.

Anyway, MegaUpload was obviously superior to RapidShare (unless you got premium access to the latter for free). However, I don't know about you, but I didn't like either of them that much, nor did I like their million competitors. Scientific analysis of when the internet turned to shit

Not that 4chan or memes are that important, but this crossover is indicative of when things started turning south
>>
>>57810210
you just go to shitty web forums, i've been involved w particular forum since ~2005 and it's a small group not 10000 and the people who run it don't do that shit

i just don't post/get involved on web forums with asshole mods, problem solved
>>
everybody wants to blame facebook it's only partially facebook

it's cell phones bringing normies on the internet that ruined it

they outnumber the white male nerds who laid it all out there, that's why the internet sucks now

not facebook, DEFINITELY not google (google was instrumental in making the internet awesome)

fuckin cell phones, girls, normies, niggers

Seven years ago, about 50% of the internet traffic came from several thousand websites and about 100% of it was as useful as Hitler's left testicle.

Fuck off you extra chromosome nostalgia having faggots. The only reason you retards think it's so bad now is because stupid cunts abuse it. Websites are made by big nose greedy fucking Jewish men with small penises that compensate for it by fucking other people over. They're not made by designers. They're not even programmed by true Aryan brothers as they should be. They're programmed by Pajeet in his designated poo station.

At least we're able to fight back with adblockers and such. It's been an amazing jump from 2007. People are just ruining a good thing. As they always do. You think it's bad now... Wait until the SJW's get their way.

https://web.archive.org/web/20070606214448/http://www.youtube.com/

There you go, jerk off all day to your nostalgia. The good old day, amiright? Morons.
>>

I agree with you that the Internet is better now.

There are so many useful resources that very few people actually take advantage of. You can basically learn anything you want on the Internet now, it is fantastic.

However, you have to be blind to think that having so many normies on the Internet hasn't ruined some things. Just look at clickbait and journalism in general. Facebook and social media has ruined the types of articles journalists write because they want all those clicks and facebook shares.

There are so many things that have taken a step backwards since 2007. Sure there are some things that have gone forward, but not everything man.

It's always been like this. The advancement of technology is great for humanity. Advancement of anything is great, but it always opens doors for the Jewish to take advantage. It's a constant battle.

I'll be honest, it's depressing. If you're not an amateur in this field you'll know what I'm talking about. It's like this in life in general, but it's so soul sucking. It's never over. No matter how hard to fight back it's never over. People are always there to shit it up and ruin it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqhNKWTc3R0 As an example. Not sure if it's appropriate, but whatever. If you're in /wdg/ you'll know especially.

It's unfair. You work so hard to create a great product. You optimize your site. Got that performance going real smooth. You got it all figured out. Just to be destroyed by a clickbait website. And I do mean destroyed. They make A LOT of money for nothing... On top of giving you malware. What do you do? What do you even say? Can you even blame people at that point for turning to the dark side? That's what happens. I've seen so many people just give up and move on because of it.

It's inspirational and shit when you see it in the movies, but in real life "fighting through it and never giving up!" doesn't work because you need to pay for shit or you'll be out on the street collecting cans. That's all it is if we want to be honest with each other.

Post on forums, make your own Youtube content, don't use Facebook or smartphones.

just because there are a few giants normals use doesn't mean there aren't a million special snowflake smaller communities that have grown in quantity. I'm happy there are giants to absorb the garbage that has gotten online due to cheaper infrastructure and greater availability of cheap hardware. Smartphones and other mobile toys were by far the biggest contributor to the pollution of the internet. It's evident, even in this website
>>
No. The internet is too young. The golden age will be when the internet is free and global.

New minds will have access which means New ideas and ultimately better and faster internet.

I do not want the internet I had growing up. Everything were noticeably slow and ugly as fuck.
>>
I stopped using social media in 2009.

I don't know what you are on about with it not existing before then.
>>
>>57810381
You're dumb, and the internet has managed to completely fuck national and global discourse because people take it seriously, but then argue in 140 characters.

The internet was better when everything wasn't on it.

Honestly, now is probably better than 2009. Just compare WhatsApp, SnapChat, etc. to Facebook. A lot of today's "social apps" are pseudonymous and WhatsApp even offers end-to-end encryption (too bad it's closed source).

we've been over this, this is a good thing because salty mcfaggot nofriend permavirgin admin won't be able to ban everyone over nothing.

The only way to solve this is to have search engine page rankings include a "piece of shit" number in their algorithms because we enter this weird state of all of the forums on the first page are run by losers.

All of the IRC channels, and BBSes that you see advertised on this board are prime examples of "ban on sight" within 15 seconds of saying something they don't like.

wouldn't trust any nostalgiashit images like that since next their shitty argument is going to be that because there's the 2-3 biggest web hosts like godaddy or hostgator that the web is bad now because "it's all in the same place"

nostalgia turds would miserably fail at any business, which is why they became nostalgia turds in the first place to soak up their time

That's actually a pretty good policy to follow if you're a cool admin. Cool admins basically seem to only not like shitposting, spam and excessive rudeness.
>>
>>57825585
This is true for the first couple of months but as time goes on it will be ban-on-sight for even the most pointless shit or if you go even slightly against the grain of whatever local memes or wrong information the site keeps repeating. They won't give a reason why you were banned because to do so would mean admitting how phantasmagoriacally biased they are and take everything as a threat. They won't post a sticky either because they'd also have to admit it that way and then we have a massive amount of users who genuinely have no clue why their posts are disappearing.

>shitposting
This is one of the biggest ways they do this, just claim anything they don't like or can't counter is "trolling" or "shitposting". these words have completely lost their meaning.
>>
>>57826880
>This is one of the biggest ways they do this, just claim anything they don't like or can't counter is "trolling" or "shitposting".
Good point. Do you think there a way that this sort of decline in moderation quality could be prevented with software?
