GIMP is actually pretty good, I've used GIMP and Photoshop extensively, and i preferred a lot of interface and user experience aspects in GIMP.
Photoshop is more powerful but i don't think it's worth its price, whenever features useful to the average user are pretty much all implemented into GIMP.
Considering that it's free, i can't argue much against it.

Not ideal for digital painting though. However, really, Photoshop isn't perfect for that application either.

gimp is actually incredible for sprite design.

personally, I prefer a 1998 version of MS paint(most useful features with least bloat to machete through), and then I transfer images over to paint.net if I need transparency. I've played around with gimp, it's definitely professional level for spriters, but I'll never choose it over an old MS paint program, when pixels were pixels, the line tool made lines in one click, and paintbrush didn't fuck everything up.

Is krita a good photoshop replacement or is it only for art creation?
I use photoshop pretty frequently to fulfill requests in the image modification threads on /w/ and /wg/. Could I use krita for those types of jobs? (things like cutting out certain parts of images, lightening/brightening, changing resolution, etc.)
>>

that type of stuff absolutely. But that's not even 1% of what PS does and for more complex shit it might not be enough to use Krita. Download it and see

I do a fair bit of amateur poster design and stuff for organizations I'm part of and I also edit a fair amount of photos. I actually am better with GIMP than photoshop and even find using photoshop instead of GIMP annoying honestly. It's literally whatever you spend the most time with. For personal use, GIMP is an equivalent to photoshop. The only reason to use photoshop is if you were indoctrinated into it by school or if you use it in combination with other adobe suite products for productivity purposes.

GIMP is a complete mess. The interface is unintuitive. The tools are shit. It's a perfect example of what happens when you let a programmer design an interface.

Who the hell thought placing huge blue dots over every point you make with the polygonal lasso tool was a good idea? Or that adding three different ways to change the brush size all crammed into one tiny space would be considered good design?

GIMP is a powerful tool, but it's incredibly unintuitive compared to Photoshop and lacks some basic convenience features that even old versions of Photoshop have.

I still use Photoshop 7.0 (pirated it ~12 years ago and still suits my needs, although also have the legit free copy of CS2) in Wine, but I've been using GIMP for basic shoops and image macros.

Paint.net is easy to use, easier than regular ms paint. But it's also quite minimal in functionality. It is basically a combination of photo correction and painting program. If you need anything more than basic image editing and manipulation abilities then it's not for you.

The new color and selection antialiasing capabilities kick ass though.

>GIMP is only unintuitive if you started with Photoshop and never bothered to really learn GIMP.

Not him, but I started out with GIMP since it was the easiest tool to get. You get used to it after a while, but once I tried out Photoshop I just didn't want to go back. Photoshop presents its features in such a "smooth" way that you end up wondering why anyone would do it differently.

The brush engine doesn't take space on the screen when you're not meddling with it; The selection tools are either dashed lines or the inverse of the color it is covering, making it easier to see and taking up less space that three lines going from corner to corner and with circles on the edges; There are no floating layers; The menus are arranged in a way that makes sense, with the most used features at the root (image>mode, Image>adjustments, Layer>merge all layers); The lines I drew were smooth and not all jagged like they were in GIMP; It supported 16 bit image editing. My gradients had never looked so good on GIMP.

All in all, photoshop was just the better tool. There isn't a single feature GIMP had that made me consider going back other than it being free and capable of running on platforms other than mac and windows, but frankly, that's not even enough since I could just run Photoshop on wine or on a VM.

something useful I just figured out is you can put math equations in number input boxes. for example the rectangle select you can select the whole screen then it will be 800x600 or whatever. in the heightbox change 600 to 600/2 and hit enter and it will turn to 300. you can also do for example 0 + 777/2 and it will work it out for you. view->snap is pretty useful as well
