Yes you should, OP, and any good distro would by default - data from RAM is confidential and temporary so you shouldn't keep keys.

I'd be very surprised if your filesystem has error correction coding (erasure coding, R-S, Raptor, whatever) by default, but if it did, it works absolutely fine under (say) XTS.
Of course your media, at a sector level, probably does but if we've learned anything over he last few decades it's that important data needs more redundancy than you think: look at the block level error rate of your media, and the number of blocks, and do the maths.
