I can't even begin to understand how AMD would try to sell Summit Ridge (a lower clocked not top-of-the-line IPC chip) as a gaming platform.

This is either a super early sneak peak of the Raven Ridge APU (i.e., a reveal of both Zen and Vega = impossibly unlikely), some cherry picked as fuck DX12 super-threaded obscure games, or suicide on their part.

Baseline its 40% higher IPC than Excavator, and despite being clocked significantly lower its still outpeforming the FX 8350. That'll give them a decent step up even in more serial running titles. In games that have a well threaded engine they'll be right up next to the current i7s and i7E.
Tons of games out now are making good use of 8+ threads.

Though despite all that, AMD will allegedly be showing off DOTA2.

Obviously better threading is gonna be required in the future for games to not be awful on future processors, but we're not there yet.

Most existing things will do better on 4+ GHz 4 core Haswells and above.
