Is the NSA really watching everything we do?
Internet is the biggest telemetry tool ever created.
They don't have enough staff to watch everyone, but they used to collect bulk data about everyone, at least in the US, then if they needed to find out something about someone they could just query the database.
It was harder to actually identify shit they were actually looking for (like signs that someone may become radicalised), so apparently that bulk data collection may have been stopped.

yes we are
no. But Google is

Modern machine learning and natural language processing means they don't need staff.

>machine learning
Except this is still a meme. AIs aren't capable of identifying potential terrorists, not even as well as humans, who also fail a lot at it.

the real question would be either they can watch everything we do or not

The US government doesn't really monitor anything, they just request to see the data from mega-corporations like Google and Microsoft. Google keeps a record of everything you do, from location data, to details in emails, and words entered into google searches. It would be very easy for the government to then access that data if they suspect there is terrorist activity associated with a specific user.
I am doubtful however, if they do that currently, or just don't bother to take action because they want to give people the benefit of the doubt. I have yet to see any significant evidence of the government taking action on data they have secured from Google or Microsoft. This does not mean you are not being "watched", all of your data is still stored on server-side to be used however the corporation or other agency desires.

*the government does monitor communication channels through the NSA, but not on a significant level, such as from private businesses.

Yes, in the same sense that Google Earth is watching every bit of water in the ocean.

Is this loss?
Of course they are still watching us.
