I want to install a new fan using Asus FanConnect for my new 1060 Strix GPU, but I'm a massive newfag.

Is it better to have a fan blowing onto the flat side of the GPU? Or is it better to be blowing onto the side with the fans?

I don't think my main case fan's wire can even reach my GPU's connector, and it's a 3pin connector anyway, whereas my GPU is 4pin.

So I'm thinking about getting a 120gb SSD to put Manjaro on as both a workstation, and something to cushion the fall should my 1tb hard-drive die due to some stupid reason. There's just one problem, I'm already spending the max amount of money in my budget. Should I get it or is it just a meme?

Should be fine. There's a Linus Tech video on whether or not the rats nest of cables has an impact on your temperatures. With cables that sparse, you literally don't have to worry about it.

You might bundle and zip tie the spares together so it looks visually appealing.

that's a fucking god awful picture, and I don't know for sure what you are talking about, but I assume it's the speaker

I could use some help setting up my cooling.

Pic related is my case and I highlighted fan points including my PSU intake on the bottom, those are all 120mm by the way (I could go dual 140 on the front instead if that's better?). I currently have 4 fans to use. The default config is one front intake, my psu intake at the bottom, and a rear exhaust. I'm looking for better temps, but don't want it extremely loud. Specs are i5 6500 and rx 480 8gb

My build in a 500r. The cable management is weird in it. Hard drive cages are floppy pieces of shit. But there's tons of room, lots of radiator placement holes, included gigantic side intake fan is really nice. I wish I could remove the dvd bay because I don't use it.
Overall its OK but I wouldn't buy it a second time.

2.0 of my build, pls r8. I want to get ordering ASAP.

Just to clarify:

I know it's ATX, that's fine. I know my case is big, that's fine.

The PSU is fine, I don't need it any weaker as the 550w is only a few pounds cheaper.

That is a 1440p 60hz monitor, that's fine. I don't want to get involved in 144hz until there are better cards.

I just use that pc juat for Gaming and CS6 Photo Shit. In Germany you pay 2000-2500€ for such a Maschine but i think it dont Worth it so Well with the new 1050ti in Store. And you realy just need that 8GB GPU for 4k Gaming. Triggering, my gf plays Sims 3 with 700-1200 FPS...

so according to pcparkpicker I can build a decent budget system with an i3-6100, 1050, ssd, and 1tb hdd, case+psu combo, etc for under $400.

would you guys suggest this as something for a neet to make some money from? selling these on craigslist and ebay
>>
So I'm thinking about upgrading my 660ti to a gtx 1070, but do you think my AMD FX 8150 8 core 3.9ghz cpu will bottle neck the rig? Obviously it's gonna hold it back and I plan to upgrade the CPU soon.
>>
>brother asked me to build him a rig on an $1800 dollar budget

That's a load off. Definitely the priciest system and components I've assembled. Now hopefully everything just keeps working so I don't get blamed for any user problems down the line...
>>
>>57798370
Yes. Get 1060 6GB or rx 480 instead, no point going for high-end product like 1070 if you can't afford a good CPU for it too.

yo, im trying to build an ultra jew-ey gayming PC

gonna be going to a couple places tomorrow looking for decent systems that I can scavenge the CPU+Board+PSU out of that I can slap some GPU [around RX480 price/tier]

What CPU's should I be looking out for?
I've heard good things about 2500k
The most i'd be willing to spend is around 60 AUD, but even then it'd have to be a pretty good one

I have old cases I can just slap shit in, and extra fans are dirt cheap anyway.
Really I just want to be able to play planet coaster at a decent quality, and be able to render shit in premiere with reasonable time

How do I measure the compatibility for a GPU/CPU combination?

IE: If I were to buy a 1060 or an RX 480, how am I supposed to find out the perfect processor to go with it in the long term with minimal bottleneck? Sorry for the noob question; CPUs are confusing to me.

I have a shitty laptop with an i3 4010U @1.7ghz

Would it be viable for me to buy one of those external GPU PCIE things [and a gpu of course], or should I spend the extra couple hundred for a decent CPU+board?

I have a PSU and case from a like 7 year old PC that should still work

Money is kinda tight but my laptop just struggles to do anything at this point.

Far as I know if you can get older bios then you can OC with proper Z170 mobo.

>>57800512
This build is bit retarded, with bit more money on CPU(i5-6400), bit more money on GPU(1060 3GB or RX470/480 4GB), bit more money on Mobo(Z170) you can easily have a solid 1080p build.

Yes, Z170 can OC locked skylake.

First time PC builder here, just finished putting most of my shit together...
I have a problem though. when I turn the computer on it black screens if plugging the DVI into my GPU but if i take out GPU and plug DVI into motherboard with onboard graphics, i get my BIOS to show up.
I'm pretty shut i plugged the GPU in wrong, i didn't hear a click and didn't have to depress the clip to take the GPU out.
Question is- do i install the GPU first, then windows, then drivers
or
windows -> GPU -> drivers
or
windows -> drivers -> GPU?
I dont have a disk drive to install the disk drivers

shouldnt matter which order its done
just make sure its properly seated, boot into windows and download/install drivers

Not the anon who posted the picture but,
the technology is done. WD does the same thing. At this point you are looking at optimization increases in the 1-5%. Is there anything that has to be done for that in the box itself? Or is it all about partitioning after everything is put together?
How do I make sure windows and whatnot installs on the SSD and not the HDD when I start things up?

Install to SSD (likely program files). Then used a directory seeing inside the program to set the saved files dir.

>>57804744
Depends on how badly you need one. Of you can wait six mo you should. Otherwise, as always, just build something with your minimum req and upgrade later.

The Z170 platform is good if you'll want to upgrade to an unlocked CPU at some point.

Don't know what guides you're reading. Gaming doesn't need more than 8GB right now or for the foreseeable future. If you're really worried, just make sure that you have room to expand to 16GB and pick up more if you need it 4 - 6 years from now
>>
>>57808586
That's because those guides are shit. For a pure gaming PC 8GB is enough, unless you play shit like heavily modded Civ V on ultra settings and want to watch porn in 4K on a second screen.

At stock the 1050Ti has a lower perf than the 4GB 960. The Zotac Mini he mentioned gets all its power from the mobo so there is absolutely no OC headroom. The 960 however can be further OC'd

Arguably, especially with Nvidia, it pays to have the newer card. If he were trying to get a 1050Ti with a 6-pin things might be different

Haven't bought the i7, its cooler, or the mobo.
My question is, is the Corsair Obsidian 350D shit for this build? I want to use the rads as back/top exhausts and regular fans as front intakes.
Pic related, it's someone else who managed to do it.
>>
>>57811188
Never used one, never broke anything because of ESD either. I just touch something grounded before touching potentially sensitive components. This potentially means doing it multiple times while building a PC, not just once when you start.
>>
>>57811570
i'd be using it at normal desk distance, it'd probably be better to get the monitor because of that but i'm worried about the high pixel density.
>>
>>57811659
Then you've got to decide whether you want image quality (=pixel density) or workspace (=physical size). I'd personally go for quality, because workspace can always be added by using multiple monitors, but you can't improve image quality without replacing the device in question. If you essentially want a big monitor I wouldn't necessarily go for a TV either, better to have a look at some of those 4K ~40" Korean monitors.

I use a 27" 4K monitor with 125% scaling, it's perfectly usable as far as I'm concerned. Running with no scaling works too, but the text is a bit too small for perfect comfort, though it's still completely readable due to being very sharp (text this small would look shitty as fuck on a 96DPI monitor).
>>
I'm super lost on something putting my new PC together.

The manuals don't add up.
The motherboard (Asus X99-A II) says to plug in the big power cable, which was fine, then the two at the top.
The two at the top are an 8-pin and a 4-pin.
My power supply has no 8-pin to 8-pin cords.
It does have 8-pin to 4x4 pin, but if I use that, where does the other 4 pins go?

I'm very confused. Do I need to go get an extra cord or something?

>PSU came with 24-24 pin cable so that's fine
>Then 8-4x4 pin cables, 8-6x2 pin cables, and a variety of 3-sata cables.

The 8 end only seems to fit in the PSU, but the two 4 ends seem to fit in the 8 pin slot side by side. Is that alright?
Or does it have to be an 8-8 cable? Do they even have those? I don't see any when I google it.
>>
So recently I've been wanting to make a PC but I just don't want to spend too much on it

The plan was to get an mATX board, i3-6100, GTX1050 To and the cheapest case, PSU (but still quality enough), RAM, etc...

The total cost would end up being around $800 (AUS) which makes me think that I may as well buy a quality ATX case, PSU, ATX motherboard and spend the extra $400 to get a quality i5-6600k and a 1060 6GB?

Check out Leaps-from-Shadows' answer.
You plug the SSD in first, but don't plug the HDD in until after you've installed the OS. This installs the OS alone on the SSD and lets you decide where to install programs/files in the future.
Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't.

My SSD is arriving on Monday.

A few months ago I did a fresh install of Windows when I upgraded to 10. Currently my C: drive sits at 60GB. I can clone the entire drive over to my SSD with hundreds of GBs to spare.

But I see people online say I should start with a fresh install of Windows because cloning can lead to performance issues.. Don't really want to do that since I did it so recently, but if you guys say I should then I will.

Should I?

Building a computer out of parts I have laying around from old outdated PC's
The only thing I changed with this one was I put a different GPU in
I plug the monitor into the DVI port on the GPU (not the ones on the MB) and it boots and runs fine

It's Win7
Inside Device Manager > Display adapters. It says the only adapter is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter"
I haven't installed drivers yet

Is it normal that the name of the GPU isn't showing up under Display adapters?
Will it show up after I install the drivers?
I thought the GPU would come with default drivers on it that would show up in Device Manager

If it matters at all, the GPU is EVGA GeForce GTX 480
>>
>>57820598
As long as you're getting a display while plugged into the GPU you should be okay. Just install your drivers and all should be good.

Nice; pulled it off on the cheap in my opinion. I know /g/ likes to spend a lot of shekels but there are those of us who appreciate a machine you can program or gam on on the cheap.

I personally used to work in IT at a mortgage company that would retire equipment after 2 years, once I was there for 2 years they were recycling or donating 2 year old i5 and i7 workstations so I have one of those; got the gtx 750 from my mist current job I was just let go (shot myself with a .45 acp and haven't been able to work for a month ) and couldn't go into work.

All I bought for my setup was a bigger power supply.

Pic related, the exit wound.

Just built my tower, turned it on and things seem fine but there are two issues, can someone help me?

1. CPU Fan looks like it budges twice then starts after 5 seconds or so, plugging in my old cooler and it runs at powerup

2. As I'm booting my computer, if I CLICK the power button once on my tower, it immediately turns off. This is different than my past builds as I had to hold it to turn off, and I've experienced 1-click poweroffs when I had things connected wrong/shit broken

Can help?

I managed to get some pretty absurd deals by routing through newegg, amazon, and micro center during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday events, which dropped the actual price of build down to ~850, and sold my old rig for 300 which put the net cost at ~550 USD. Hey, I'm building my PC and I'm using a Cryorig R1 Ultimate for the heat sink.

I'm worried about it's orientation in the box.
I currently have it put in like pic related, but turned 90 degrees clockwise, so the metal parts point up at the fan above and the fans point down towards my graphics card.
Two questions
>Is this position okay? As is, the power cables for the Motherboard I'm using are between the metal part and the top fan. But when I tried it like pic related, the fans were pressing against my ram (Ripjaws are kinda tall), so I don't know if it's safe or not.
and

I was able to discuss airflow with a physics graduate student who is studying fluid mechanics and a comp geek, and he said that having that fan aimed so that it blows air up would be the best way to ensure good air flow.

Is there a reason I should not follow his advice?

>>57821014

The CPU cooler fan should point to the rear case fan. So the rear case fan collects the warm air from the CPU and takes it straight out of the case
>>

>Nothing works but it still runs

>>
>>57821035
I'm not him
But I've never seen them placed like that
I get that hot air rises, but I think it's more of an air flow problem
The fans at the front and the back of the case are creating a flow of cold air comes in the front, then warm air out the back
What your CPU cooler is doing is saying fuck your flow bitch, ima blow this way XD XD
That in turn fucks up the whole system

that's just my opinion tho
Also, it's pretty close to the GPU, so kind of inneficient
>>
>>57821066

That sounds fine, but how to I make the ISO install onto the samsung? Can I just do that through the BIOS?
>>
>>57821035

you're actually blowing hot air from the back of the GFX card over your CPU heatsink.
>>
>>57821117
Sounds like your power supply to me or a short somewhere.
>>
>>57821114

This case has an open top grate, so this allows the two currents of air that are splitting around the HSF tower to not interfere with one another and for the CPU air and top stream to be pushed out the top and the bottom stream and residual heat form the GPU to be pushed out the back.

Does that make sense? I am a medfag so my understanding of fluid mechanics is more or less what I needed to know to take the MCAT.
>>
>>57821137

So should I make it a pull fan setup? Thats easy enough to remediate.
>>
>>57821123
It won't actually install, if you burned the ISO image to your drive properly, you can't just copy the ISO to the drive it has to be burnt on with something like power ISO or the like. At that point, change your bios to (select boot device at startup) and you should be able to boot from it

>>
>>57821141
So did it short out both gpus you think? I really hope it is not my power supply since it is a 750 watt. Could it be anything else? If it is the power supply how do I fix it?
>>
>>57821166
That's basically just switching which side of the heatsink the fan's on. Changes nothing about the source or direction of the air going through it.
>>
>>57821195

Fair, but saying "this is normal" doesn't answer the question of whether my friend's argument of airstream management due to the "cutting effect" of the HSF tower, which can be considered to be more or less an inefficient wing, especially because the Noctua HSFs have their side panels closed.

>>57821259

I think you might be right to an extent, but it seems like the best compromise to this would be making most of the heat be from the CPU and intentionally guiding that up and out through the top grates and in the process also moving the top stream of air from the rest of the case along with it, whereas the bottom stream will go uninterupted by having a higher V air stream above it, potentially causing more turbulence than less.
>>
>>57820435
August of what year?
>>
>>57821309

Fine, leave the fan and heatsink the way it is. It's your PC.

Hi guys, this is not really related to buying parts (at least I hope not) but one day I turned on my computer and couldn't connect to the internet, went to check the adapters and "Local Area Network" was nowhere to be found, so I called tech support and they told me that maybe the "network card" (the part of the pc that handles internet connections) was broken or something, and that I needed to fix it, and that means
1.Actually fixing it
2.Buying a new one
So I wanted to ask you guys, how could I fix it, how much would it cost me to fix it, or otherwise how much would it cost me to buy a new one? Tech support also told me that if I fixed it/bought another one and the problem still persisted, to call them again. If after doing all that, and the problem still persists, what do you think could be wrong with my piece of shit, $2000 computer that was rendered completely useless as soon as it lost the access to internet?
>>
>>57821180
You don't have to select USB as the boot drive in BIOS these days. It's automatically detected
>>
>>57821509
Definitely just buy a new network adapter. They run $15 - $45, depending on what transfer speeds you need and whether you want a dual band card (2.4 and 5GHz).

First, check in device manager for the network, then open up your computer and reseat the card and then try a different PCIe slot.

In the meantime, you can connect your PC to the internet using an ethernet cable.

You really are technologically impaired, though.

well damn right I am.
I was suspecting there was something wrong on the computer end because everything was working nicely in regards to wifi and phone, and the modem was working normally and all the lights were right, but when I checked devices it said that the ethernet cable could not start, so there wasn't a connection, I thought "maybe its the cable" so I bought a new one but nothing changed, at the time there was a warning symbol instead of an x, then I knew there was something wrong with my computer, so just to be sure I called my service provider, and they told me that.

If the ethernet adapter is integrated into the motherboard, you need to get a (free) replacement mobo. The only downside is that you'll be without a functioning computer during the process.

The problem is that if its a motherboard issue I don't know if the warranty covers it, or if the board still has warranty, and I don't have the money to buy another board, so if its possible I'd like to buy a network adapter separately
>>
>>57821868
That is an extremely low end PC. Personally I'd say that the money for the SSD should be rolled into the graphics card, as much as SSDs are awesome.

Also in general, if you're just getting 1080p 60Hz, you can get a nice used one for $50.

>>57821713
You don't have to buy everything at once. For instance my PC has connections to my projector and my monitor. In your case, you could just plug the PC into your TV and use a $15 wireless keyboard (https://www.amazon.com/Hausbell-Wireless-Entertainment-Keyboard-Touchpad/dp/B00SIU7DK4) to navigate (great for Netflix/movies/surfing) and whatever old controller you have to play games. If you have the six hundred now, I'd get something similar to the following build and worry about mice and keyboards and monitors later
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/pcbg/saved/ZhnQ7P
You can find cheaper parts buy following the skeleton in the description. Can also leave out the SSD and add that later.

Get the monitor and a cheap mouse and keyboard (m+kb $15 total) if need be to start out.

You can run the serial of the PC as a whole if it was a prebuilt or the mobo's serial if it was custom to find out the warranty status. Warranties are often three years. Anyway, fucking call the manufacturer and talk to someone who gets paid to babysit you.

As long as your PC has PCIe slots, you can get any of the adapters I mentioned earlier if you don't want to deal with all that.

>>57821897
Try to reinstall drivers. Seems like your integrated ethernet is fucked. Can probably get the whole mobo replaced.
>>
>>57821997
It's true that it's a low end PC, but it's more for upgrading than anything else.
I run an i3 with a 470 that works quite fine, and the freesync on the monitor helps a bit.
>>
>>57822008
If you're at 1080p you could get an RX480 or GTX1060.

Really the next step is a 1070 (or AMD equiv when it gets released) and a 1440p >100Hz GSync/Freesync monitor

Looking in the pastebin at the brands there. Never heard of "be quiet!" as a brand. How does that sound in any way trustworthy?

Or is it kinda like batteries where all you hear about is Energizer, Duracell, and Rayovac only because they have such a huge market, but upon further research, you discover Eneloop brand which sounds no-namey as fuck, but apparently are top-of-the-line, every-enthusiast-uses-tier?
Is "be quiet!" the Eneloop of the PSU world?
