Are laser mice a meme?

My laser mouse is still going after eight ish years

Not necessarily, but as far as I'm aware, there's an inherent acceleration in all laser sensors, so laser mice aren't good for gaming or any other uses where acceleration is problematic.

There's definitely a difference when I use optical vs laser mice. In terms of accel, even though you can say there's accel at the hardware level, I can't say that I perceive it on a conscious level.

Laser mice feel more responsive, and I'm able to do lots of tiny movements that I cannot with optical. However it feels like laser mice have almost something like a "jitter" which makes tracking hard.
