Legend says that if you reach the highest stages of Arch Linux, you'll transcend physical existence:

"They are immune to heat and cold, untouched by the elements, and can fly, mounting upward with a fluttering motion. They dwell apart from the chaotic world of man, subsist on air and dew, are not anxious like ordinary people, and have the smooth skin and innocent faces of children. The transcendents live an effortless existence that is best described as spontaneous."

Tell me, masters: is this true?

I'm ok with this. I never got around to Arch because I use Skylake, and linux was basically broken until kernel 4.5 or 6. Never saw the point in Arch if it was just going to black screen like everything else I tried.

Yeah Gentoo is easy, I installed it inside my ARCH LINUX.
>>
>>57772438
if i install it via a VM with a real disk will it boot when i go to boot it on metal? or is it better to suck it up and install it for real?
>>
>>57772532
It'll boot as long as you have a bootloader set up and ready for it (if you only gave the VM a partition and not the whole disk, extra intervention may be required or you can chainload by installing GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR)

If you install Gentoo via a VM make sure you configure the kernel to have support for both your hypervisor's emulated hardware and your real hardware. I used to dual boot this way in the past, so I can confirm it works fine.

One thing that annoys me about linux is their whole audio shit. Wish they would make it just simple like it is on windows and such.
>>

Eh just a lot of elitist pricks who can be rude and annoying if you ask for any help or certain issues. The wiki and forums are very helpful just you catch mt drift.

>>57775313
This is half truth, the distro is aimed to people with some experience in linux, and they specify you to read the wiki and seach in the forums to see if anyone have the solution, and then ask. I can understand the frustration of getting a question whose answer is on the wiki.

There are some elitists assholes, I'm not going to deny that, but most of the community is not that bad, or at least the part I've seen.
>>
>>57775419
I dunno seems needed. chances are if i removed it right now with alsa installed I'd have issues
>>
>>57775948
Just checked and yes, cinnamon has pulse as a dependency.

Depending on what you want to use you could just remove pulse and alsa and install just alsa.

I'm on awesome wm with just alsa now, never had a problem with that.

Not if you've used linux before.
When I first installed arch, I'd only ever used ubuntu, fedora, and elementary. Installing it took a while, but if you belong here, you'll find it fun. Now that I've done it before, it's a breeze. I also understand much more about linux in general thanks to using arch.
Don't really know why they deleted the beginner's guide though.

>>57770410
This. I really don't get this. I've been running Arch for like a year and have no idea what people are talking about. No package has ever broken any other package, or introduced any bugs or problems that I've noticed. Everything has always worked fine just like any other distro.

you have a lot more choice over what you want compiled into your binaries -> a LOT less bloat (arch packages include all options so even if you don't give a fuck about bluetooth or any other bloated shit it still has support for it)
more security just by virtue of compiling everything from source since you don't have the same binaries as everyone else.
the option to use hardened gentoo + grsecurity/pax patched kernel for even more security (1337hacker tier security arch n00bs can't even dream of)

I like zsh. I don't care for the enhancers the community builds so much. If you've gone that far tweaking your system might as well do the real dirty work. I am fairly set against yaourt but it's a decent guidline. I have been wanting to explore more tiling wm's but I just haven't been able to.

I'm on a fresh arch install and I got my boot down pretty low but it takes significantly longer than systemd analyze reports. Gdm takes forever to load even with auto login. Any idea how I can troubleshoot?

Beginners should start with Ubuntu (or Linux Mint).
If you want an easy Arch-based distro, choose Manjaro.

Just a regular upgrade this morning.

Threw it in my bag, got to school, booted it up and that's what I got.

What do I do? Downloading the iso to chroot in and see if anything can be salvaged,
>>
>>57790241
while i didn't check them all, but at least a few of those are owned by the "systemd" package on my system
so i'd first try to reinstall that from a chroot, perhaps it failed to update properly

also look around to see if anything else is missing/broken, perhaps do a chkdsk to make sure the the filesystem itself is in one piece

can't say for certain what the machines' state is or what the cause was from here
>>
>>57790517
To what directory do you typically chroot into?

Never had to do this before.

s/chkdsk/fsck/

Reminder. Arch is bloated and "simple for the devs", not for the users.

https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2015-July/039443.html

Basically, Arch is a distro for cucks
>>
>>57790536
the root
the one with "usr", "bin", "var", etc

like this (assuming arch livecd);
# mount /dev/sdz1 /mnt
# arch-chroot /mnt bash
(skips a few steps over using plain chroot)
that's it, now your shell is in the context of your on-disk installation, doing things like running pacman from here is just like if you were running off your on-disk install
>>
>>57790608
oh, and running "exit" will get you back to the livecd shell
you can also switch tty if you need access to both shells at the same time (other tty's will still be in the context of the livecd)
>>
>>57790608
>>57790626
>chroot: ailed to run command "bash": Exec format error

whut
>>
>>57790597
if i wanted to manage every little thing, i'd go back to gentoo
after a while i said fuck it, i didn't need or want to spend time shaving off a few megs here and there on my desktop system
yes, arch packages are big, but sometimes that's just what you want
>>
>>57790639
ensure the livecd is the same bitness as your on-disk install (ex. both 64bit)
>>
>>57790681
God bless.

Now I've fucked myself though. I was using GNOME NetworkManager and can't figure out how to configure my network now.
>>
>>57790765
if it's wired, just run "dhcpcd" (livecd shell)
>>
>>57790882
It's not. No ethernet port.

:(
>>
>>57790900
then this is probably what you want;
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netctl#Wireless_.28WPA-PSK.29
the livecd should have the tools listed already available
>>
>>57790079
>>57790121
Oh fuck I'm really a retard

Thanks for the (you) I guess
>>
>>57790900
>>57790765
ps. don't forget you also (should) have available your pacman package cache
if the cached package is ok, you can reinstall systemd without downloading it again
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/systemd-232-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

(chroot context, version in your cache may differ, adjust to suit)

>>57790987
i figured you were just making an intentionally weak excuse to post your desktop/wallpaper as well
also, i think scrot only grabs the first display by default unless you specify -m

>>

As little as possible

The default install doesn't even come with x/sudo/vim.
If using arch anywhere/architect installer it'll add any DE/WM, wifi management and stuff but still minimal
>>
>>57791063

If you edit video or run highly unoptimized matlab or whatever you may very well fill 10G+ of ram.

Ran a research on adaboost variants once and it's really really comfy to hold >1M CART nodes in RAM. Or all word permutation of some book
>>
>>57791230
