How would thicc keys affect a keyboard? Would they feel lighter as the spring is more easily pressed?

Kinda new to mkg shit, have a corsair and another Korean knockoff. I really like the 75% layout, and I'm one of those dummies who love rgb so I'm happy. I'm still bottoming out hard, might need greens or just to relearn how to type.
>>
>>57770488
>I'm still bottoming out hard

I thought that was normal. I have reds and I clack the shit out of them.
>>
>>57770524
Heard it's normal with reds because you don't have tactile or audible feedback when the switch actuates, with blues it gives you both around halfway yet I still bottom out really hard

Thinking of getting an aluminum case for my Leopold FC660 to match this when it gets here in March or whenever.
>>
>>57770831
So you're one of the 260+ idiots who bought them.

State your reasons.
>>
>>57770860
I like solid aluminum and the case design. I currently use a numpad in my left hand with much of the keys locked out. 10 keys is enough for me to bind to my Photoshop hotkey needs and swap to a second layer for arrows and more hotkeys as needed while I keep a pen in my right hand. If the Van numpad thing didn't look so plain I would've gone for that, but this has come up.

Just got this bad boy in the mail today. My first mechanical keyboard, can't wait to see if the meme is worth it.

One thing that I do find mildly annoying is the right Windows key and right Alt key are switched on this keyboard compared to all the other ones that I've used. Anyone know why this is, and if it can be 'fixed'?

Also, can I pull off keycaps safely without using a keycap puller?

It's been amazing considering how much I paid for it. I can play most older games like csgo, wow, lol, at 60 fps. But newer games like overwatch at a smooth 30.

I have an ssd and 16gb ram and dual boot windows 10 and lubuntu. Super smooth and fast boot times on launch and applications.

Highly suggest it. It's also really small and can hold about 6-7 hours of battery.

Model M buckling springs are heavier then model Fs and are still in production so they are easy to find. Their website has more options, but you can also buy them from amazon

http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/category/UKBD

https://www.amazon.com/s?me=A2GLVWCFA1U5MG&merchant=A2GLVWCFA1U5MG&qid=1478087739

Now if you want the clackiest switch, then that goes to the Omron amber which are even louder and more tactile then buckling springs, but those are really hard to find. Another option for some heavy switches would be any of the old complicated alps. Blues are the heaviest of them all, but those are hard to find.

pretty sure the Honeywell keyboard posted here are leagues better then your 2-key rollover and plastic shit construction. Also, any of the old IBM model Ms are better then that cheapo poorfag board
>>
>>57777303
Considering how long the old model Ms have lasted, I don't think this is an issue tbqh
>>
>>57777378
Look up "Model M bolt mod", they frequently have issues with ghost key presses and repeating keys due to poor construction that can only be fixed by removing the rivets and rebolting. It happens in Unicomps way more than Ms.

>>57777377
Eh, like none of those Honeywells work on modern machines. I think only like one guy has a USB one.
>>
>>57777116

I mean, it really IS that much.
>>
>>57777378
If you bolt mod them then yes they do last forever, but those plastic rivets just suck. My dad was a systems analyst back in the day so he had a couple of these stored away, and when I went to use it some of the keys weren't working. If he had stored it better then the rivets wouldn't have rotted away. Now those model F conversion kits for model Ms do look interesting and I might as well get one to both fix my broken model M and getting a much superior keyboard.

Plus it doesn't take up too much space, which is important to me.

its gonna be pricey, but if you can afford it go for it. There are also compact designs like the 1800 layout which sell for a fraction of the cost. Leopold has one like the FC980m, and cherry has the g80-1800 series

only thing is it feels pretty linear, might be due to it being lighter than actual Topres, like there is some sort of bump to it but its hard to feel. Any way around this?

arent Topres 55g?
Do O rings or landing pads or anything help make it more tactile?
>>
>>57779144
There are 55g Topre boards but most are 45g or variable weighted.
https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf104&pid=xf01t0
This one, like many of the RF series, is variable at 30, 45, 55. I heard that Ripster tested it and its more like 35 than 30 but I don't feel like going on Reddit now.
https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf104&pid=aeax0100
This one is uniform 45g. The HHKB is 45g and many of the RF 87 are sold in uniform 45g.
https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless&pid=rf_se18t0
This one's pretty uncommon at 55g. It's what you think the Novatouch is at but it's heavier.
Bestwiki tells the weights and other stuff about RF boards, you should check it out.
https://deskthority.net/wiki/Topre_Realforce
>Do O rings or landing pads or anything help make it more tactile?
O rings reduce travel distance among other things. I think the Novatouch comes with it, so you can see if you prefer them. O-rings come in different hardnesses and thicknesses.
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/cherry-mx-rubber-o-ring-switch-dampeners-125pcs.html
I haven't used soft landing pads but I doubt they increase tactility.

Should we get a new thread?
>>
>>57779229
It should be noted that the Realforce RGB is *not* compatible with normal Topre keycaps.
It only takes Cherry MX.

just get a Unicomp model M and mod it to become a model F

I'd recommend the ultra classic, but you can also go for the more traditional option. They have lots of customization options including some custom keycaps in whatever layout you want

Now to mod it to a model F you have to hurry since the group buy ends soon

well if you want to do it incrementally then you could start be deciding what layout you want. 60% is the easiest since it has the most options and the parts are readily available, but if you want full size you have to be patient. Gon sells some parts, but you have to wait about a year before he gets them to you. Then the metal case and plate will take about another 2, but maybe you could be lucky and he could ship it to you in about 4 months. If you think waiting a few years is too long then you could wait for a group buy to sell some kits, but you have to be quick since they only last a couple weeks and come once every few years. The hardest parts to get are the case and plate, but you could just make it out of wood or something. Now if you have some soldering skills you could skip the PCB and hand wire the whole thing, then program it using a teensy. Switches and key caps are easy since almost everyone sells them.

My recommendation is to build a gh60 since it is one of the most popular keyboard kits it is also the cheapest. Some people have been creative and built stuff using acrylic or an HHKB, but with alps switches instead of topres. If you can get a metal work shop to make you plates then you can make a truly custom keyboard, but usually they charge a hundred bucks depending on how fancy of a design it is
>>
>>57780166
kill me now I use the full key set set on a regular basis might just go with a unicomp M or would it be worth it to buy an IBM M and a converter?
>>
>>57780256
you don't need a converter for a model M, unless its the terminal ones. Mine uses a ps/2 connector, while the unicomp ones have usb. If you can get a used one for cheap then go for it. You may have to clean it, or worst case scenario the plastic rivets on the inside are rotten so you have to bolt mod it. Bolt modding is just replacing the plastic rivets with bolts. There are plenty of guides online on how to do it.

I'm looking to buy a new mechanical keyboard. Wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

I like media controls. I want something very serviceable/customizeable down to being able to swap out key switches. What fits

>>57778284
I really like this layout. Do they make any backlit 1800s?

>>57778079
Actually I went digging and I like that keyboard a lot. Do they come as a kit or something? I saw some builds. Where could I find the parts to put a keyboard together? I couldn't find anything about it on massdrop and all I could find was an aliexpress listing.
>>
>>57783040
>I like browns
>Implying anyone does
>>
>>57783091
I've only used red and brown and I prefer the browns. I dunno I guess I ought to buy one of those packs and try some out.
>>
>>57783098
That means you probably prefer tactile over linear. Browns aren't very tactile though. Gateron browns, gateron tactile clears, zealios, MX clears, and Topres are also tactile but with more pronounced tactile bumps.
>>
>>57769899
I fucking love that layout. Holy shit.
>>
>>57782903
Not like the Rama thing is aesthetically much better, with its bloated bezels and overall excessive size

But hey, if you're the type of person who thinks old vintage keyboards with casings near to twice the size of the actual keyboard go ahead, knock yourself out. None of my business how you waste your money.
>>
>>57783239
Yeah I do prefer some feedback. I don't necessarily need pronounced feedback. I liked the browns with silencers on them because they're tactile but still light and quiet. If anything else fits that profile I'd be willing to try it.
>>
>>57783293
Maybe Gateron Browns. They're like MX browns, but a bit smoother and with a larger tactile bump but still smaller than that of an MX clear or Zealio.
>>
>>57783293
Gateron browns are supposed to be exactly that but better made and smoother to use than the Cherry version. Zealios and clears have much more pronounced feedback, so even with low weight springs you probably wouldn't like them.
>>
why doesn't other companies than Unicomp make spring-buckle keyboards anymore?
aren't they supposed to be highly sought after?
>>
>>57783338
Buckling spring fans are a very vocal minority.
Also a lot of them just buy second-hand originals and modify as necessary instead of buying new from Unicomp.
Also Unicomp can only really do what they do since they bought the original tooling off IBM from what I remember, any other company looking to do it would need to develop their own tooling which ain't cheap.
