This may be a really dumb question, but if there anything one should have installed/enabled (that isn't by default on ububtu 16.04) for protection such as an anti-virus?

Coming from windows, I'm just so used to seeing nod32 just sitting there and giving me the feel good knowing that it's just there (and hopefully working even tho I cba to update nod32 password)
>>
>>57767450
you don't need anti-virus programs because there are no viruses, and even if you write one for gnu/linux, they need execute rights in order to do anything bad. so they will ask you for your password first. use common sense and you're alright. if you want to check your files for windows viruses, use clamav
>>
>>57767450
There is no such thing like "Viruses", only programs that do things. To be save, don't run programs that do things that you don't want or programs that hide what they are doing like proprietary software.
>>
>>57767450
Feel safe answer:

Install firejail, a program that puts other programs into a safe sandbox.
Usage: $ firejail firefox
Easy like that

Install ufw, since iptables is pretty difficult.
Check the archwiki about how to configure it.

Don't copy paste any codes from websites/blogs, especially oneliners like: $ curl something.io | bash or basically anything you see on /g/

Don't use PPA's, the AUR or other user repos, which allow any literlly who people to execute stuff on your machine. If you really need to, check the source first, and disable the repo after you installed the program.

WINE is not an emulator or a VM. Any windows program that you run in WINE can harm your system.

my 2 cents

Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system “Linux” is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 (unity) at the moment

Is there any way to change the order of the icons on the bar to the left easily?

Is there anyway to change the order of the icons on the top bar? Also, is it possible to change the font and put a little bit more space in between the icons up there? For example, I have the day/date/time and it's very crunched together

Also if I install gnome and use that instead of unity, will that remove the bar on the left?

Will I need to retweak everything all over again if I switch to gnome?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Unity is the least customizable of all DEs. If you want to switch DEs, switch your Ubuntu flavor altogether instead of installing a million DEs. Download Ubuntu gnome, kubuntu, xubuntu, etc and run them all live to see which one you like before reinstalling clean
>>
>>57768683
unity is hard to hack, tried it myself and mostly you end up hacking the source code
what you can do: kill unity and use an alternative panel like tint2 or lemonbar, but it would all end up too hacky...

why installing a new system in order to switch the de? are you stupid?
>>
>>57768938
once you install 1 DE it tends to be pretty hard to fully remove it, and it will always taint the system.
>>
>>57768938
a DE is ALWAYS a crude, ugly, very ugly hack and you simply can't be sure that switching to another DE woun't prick your system
try to get rid of KDE for example and switch to gnome, you end up with lots of KDE crap leftovers

All you need in root is /boot and /home.
You can sudo rm- rf those /mnt /media or /run/media folders and just do
mkdir -p ~/myownmountfolder && mount /dev/sdb1 ~/myownmountfolder for anything you want to mount.

Your file managers or udiskctl will probably complain though. Just remove them and use a terminal to browse files.

If you will use your tablet a lot, your biggest problem will be adjusting your tablet's drawing area and assigning buttons. If you have a Wacom tablet, the most common tool is a cli. I usually prefer command line tools but this is an exception, configuring a tablet like this is painful. Unless you plan to just set it once and never configure again, search for a tool with a GUI for your device's brand. I've found some that depends on a specific DE to work (Plasma/KDE).

Other than that, I've had no issues with anything else. Buttons and strips just work. Pressure curves/sensitivity can be configured directly and most drawing programs, like Gimp and Krita, has their own adjustment utilities.

>>

read this article http://www.techrepublic.com/article/why-the-linux-mint-hack-is-an-indicator-of-a-larger-problem/
ubuntu MATE is a good starting point
>>
>>57772889
Yep. Mint is basically ubuntu with very bad hacked together rice and in order to keep the rice working, Mint blocks updates for major programs like the kernel, the init, X, etc. So, let's say some kernel exploit was found, all distros get security updates, but if you're using Linux Mint, you woun't and have to wait for a new version of Mint.

tl;dr mint is a bad version of ubuntu colored green

noobs want GNU/Linux to behave like Windows
Linux Mint behaves like Windows, and it does the job really good; bad security, violating licences, being shit, friendly to normalfags
that said, I guess the only reason why mint is so popular is because their website was cracked and people searched for linux mint and pushed the click counter on distrowatch (IMHO)
>>
>>57773015
Just in case, basically this disussion at the kernel list: https://lwn.net/Articles/676664/
related blacklist: https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/blob/master/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/rules

People need to stop shilling Mint. It may be comfy for Windows refugees who come "straight outta botnet" and in this case, using Linux Mint is ofc better, but people will not get the full security any enjoyment of using a GNU/Linux distro here

I'm gonna install Manjaro for dualboot with windows.
Mainly for software development purpouses.
So a few questions:
I'm using Manjaro because I felt it comfortable last time I had it. Is there any good reason not to pick it? Is there a distro that's more suited to software development than another?
How much harddrive space should I leave open for the manjaro install? Windows can obviously only read NTFS but a linux can read many more file systems. So I'm thinking I should just leave it the bare minimum (and maybe a few GB more for 'safety'). Any flaws with that idea?
Other are there any other concerns I should have?

I'm only using Windows 7 and I'm very unlikely to upgrade without getting a new PC.

i don't really like the way arch works, its tiny repos, and AUR being unaudited & written by idiots, the package manager (last time i checked) didn't verify packages after downloading them, and its community is trash. but if manjaro suits your needs best then it's that you should be using
>>
>>57773389
Noone actually thinks arch is hardcore, some people just think that other people think its hardcore and use it because they think that.
I havnt installed arch from scratch but I cant imagine its much different in process from a debian netinst. Install in a few hours, most of thats downloading, spend a day or two ricing it up or just download a DE and get going immediately, things generally work fine.
Hell I should replace my antergos with arch when I get some time.

>Linux family tree
Linux is a kernel. No need to mention it unless you're talking about kernel related issues. The system is the GNU system, developed by the GNU project. Learn more about the issue here: https://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.en.html

this (you)'s meme is pretty terrible, isn't it?
Even if many mean it ironically, its a prime example of
>any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be retards will eventually be flooded by actual retards who mistakenly believe they're in good company
hell, they're also liable to shitpost themselves into actually being retarded, too. Repeating something ironically enough times they start actually believing it.

Archnigger here and I basically can confirm: I learned how to copy paste commands to create a filesystem, that's it. Nothing wrong with arch but it doesn't tech anything. I guess installing Gentoo would do it.

that's because you copy paste shit without reading what it does, if you were to actually understand indepth what the fuck it is you're doing with those commands then maybe you would learn a thing or too

Not arch in particular, but 'minimal' systems like it have sure as hell taught me how to use the CLI decently.
Not necessarily a deep knowledge about the ins and outs of unix system administration, yeah, but its still a useful skill that needs acclimating to if ones only used the windows shell before.

So I'm planning on switching from windows to linux, maybe using ubuntu or manjaro distro.

My mates sorting me a spare fresh laptop, that he gets from his work for free, that I will test on.

What are some veyr basic tips I should know to help aid in this switching process.

I'm not a computer and know my way around basic computer stuff but have only ever used windows.
