What do you guys think of pacman AI from a programmer perspective?
Easiest AI to make. Ghosts just walk around randomly or at best will try to go towards the player. Which takes 4 ifs (1 for each direction).

yeah I know, but my point is that is still much better than modern AAA game AI.
still curious as to why.
how something so simple from the 80's still is considered the peak of game AI.
Is so great designed, just like also DOOM AI.

It's just tweaked well. Code doesn't have to be complicated to work well. It's what you're usually given to write when you first start doing any sort of AI work. Things get a lot more complex later on.

I think is not about being complicated what it make it so great.
Is just that pacman AI is so well designed.
Sometimes a simple wave function is a better AI than something more complicated.
