What does /g/ think of Gigabyte? Are they comparable to MSI?
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VChytJ

Not sure about this case, worried it will run really hot and loud.

Need something decently portable. Also considering the Thermaltake box and NZXT manta.

If I want to Overclock an RX 480 or a GTX 1060, do I need to upgrade my 500W PSU?

I have Silverstone Precision Series 11 Black - Quiet (PS11B-Q) case for my build, now I'm regretting getting the "Quiet" version with closed off padded panels for the front sides and top. There exists a more air-flowing version PS11B-W, and I'm wondering if there's anywhere I could just get the panels for it? I haven't tried asking Silverstone personally.

anyone got a useful guide for what do/not to do with your new ssd?
>>
>>57748326
2. Just put your OS on and your most played games, that's pretty much it.

3. I seriouly doubt you'll hit the lifespan of your SSD. It's something stupid like 1 million hours mean time to failure or something. Just make sure you disable automatic defragging on your drive, it'll cause performance issues.

You shouldn't buy cheap trash power supplies in the first place. Nice fake wattage you got there.
>>
>>57748488
I didn't. I bought this PC back in 2012 and I think the PSU came with the case (same brand). It's 2016 now, and I haven't had any problems so far, I was just wondering if I should replace it if I were to upgrade my 7850 Radeon Card to an RX480 or a 1060.

Is The Witcher 3 a really CPU intensive game? I'm looking to run a RX480 with an i5-3450 hoping for 60fps at Full HD but someone said I should really upgrade my CPU.

I bought mine 3 days ago, didn't even have time to assemble.

Was there even a recall for thremal pads? EVGA says everything is fine.
I might just send it back without unpacking and get an MSI. Shame, because I got it really cheap at black friday, now I will have to pay $60 more.

I see the 1060 and the RX 480 being compared a lot here.

In base/core clock speed, I noticed the 1060 operates at 1708MHz in silent mode compared to the RX 480's 1316 MHz in overclock mode.

Forgive me for sounding like a colossal newfag, but isn't this a pretty significant difference for two similarly priced cards?
>>
>>57749366
Oooh, yeah, that's a good deal there if you can afford.

>>57749511
Difference in shader units.

You can have high clock speeds, and low amount of shader units, or low clock speeds and a shitton of shader units.

CUDA cores for Nvidia, Shader something for AMD.

That's the difference.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WdvKKZ

Thinking of getting a Christmas build for myself. Looking to build a gaming PC, complete with peripherals and an adapter, on a budget of about $800.

Can I go any further than this?
>>
>>57749658
So I assume higher clock speeds will usually provide superior FPS, while shader units provide better detail? Is there anything I should be looking for in the product descriptions? Because ctrl-F yields no results for "shader" in either page. I can get the RX 480 for $20 cheaper, but still unsure whether or not I should pull the trigger.
>>

Is updating the motherboard's bios as dangerous as gigabyte's site says it is? I might have to update mine to use a new video card, but it's giving a lot of warnings.
>>
>>57750019
>Is updating the motherboard's bios as dangerous as gigabyte's site says it is?
It used to be tricky, but modern BIOSes have a pretty straight forward way of updating.

In most cases, it's just formatting a USB as FAT, downloading some image from the vendor's website.

Reboot and go into BIOS setup, find the "update BIOS" option and select the image from the USB stick.
>>
There's a lot of posts about EVGA cards bursting into flames but are their PSUs still trustworthy?
>>
>>57749808
Nonono, I mean.

Total FPS is equivalent to the number of shaders being processed at the rate of the clock speed.

It's like STR VS DEX in DPS, Do you go with the spear or the fighter, they both will kill the enemy in the same amount of time at different rates.

And yeah, they usually don't include shadercount for RX 480.

Is it worth paying an extra $70 for an extra 4gb of vram in an RX 480?

Finally ended up ordering the CPU for my new build.
I chose the 5820k over the 6800k, since there was about 80€ price difference between them.
From what I gather, the 6800k doesn't OC as well, runs hotter at higher clocks and doesn't really offer anything that would justify any sort of extra price there, even if it has marginally better IPC.
I assume I didn't fuck up now that I chose to go with the older option here.

Doing my first build, using PCPartPicker.

What I'm concerned with is that of all my items, the best deals are all different sites. Amazon, Scan, Aria and other less known tech shops.

What is the actual practical next step in purchasing?

Do I sign up at all these different locations and buy the single components from them whilst managing multiple S&H costs, and do I have to consider the warranty included from each different site?

Or do I just isolate my sources and try to get it all from one location or minimize it to a few, at the cost of less better deals?

Trying to recall on what I've read 2x 8 pin allows more power draw, so technically a more powerful GPU right?

Therefore wouldn't getting a GPU that takes 2x 8pin be a better purchase? (Sorry for dumb question)
>>
>>57755444

Yeah that seems the sensible choice, thanks.

Do you buy it through PCPartPicker or go directly to the site and add them manually into the basket mirroring the build on PCPP?
>>

>When picking a GPU (1070) should I be concerned about whether it 1x or 2x 8 pin?

Focus on the clockrates and the cooling, not the power draw.
>>

I wouldn't add another SSD, I would go and find a 1tb 7200rpm drive. The WD blue is the default go-to, but I'm running a seagate barracuda for 1 year now and it's had no problems. It's $15 less. Hitachi drives are also good.
Idk where you plan on finding a rx 470 for $150, but if you can? Definitely go for it. Maybe use 2 sticks of ram to get dual channel. I doubt for your needs, you will need 16gb any time soon.
But to answer your question, yes that seems like a nice trimmed down build that will play e-sports, and even some AAA games extremely well.

I'm trying to build a PC for vidya and shit, but since I've been on a really shitty rig that can't even run new vegas at minimum I'm set to buy new hardware with futureproofing in mind I know it's not easy to remain in budget and all but here goes nothing. All tips are welcome

Budget is around 1100€
I'd like some tips and if possible help lowering the price without compromising much.

So I already have this motherboard in the mail from newegg where I paid $45 w/a $5 rebate. I held off on buying my i3 6100 processor yesterday because I missed the $75 deal at jet.com and hoped I would find a better deal than the $99 it was available for at multiple places. I just saw this deal at microcenter--$30 off processor+motherboard which would end up with me paying $125 pre-tax minus a $15 rebate. So $110 pre-tax for the i3 plus the motherboard. Am I going to find a better deal than this or should I jump on it now? This is my first build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/J3WZ9W

Your best bet for that price would probably be the G3258 in the cheapest Z97 board you can find. It's actually a preferred build for emulation because you can get some pretty insane clocks on that Pentium and that's really all that matters for PCSX2 and Dolphin.

Note that it's probably going to cost you more for a mITX Z97 board than a microATX board just because that's the way ITX works.

EVGA 650W or 850W

GTX 1070
i7 6700k
Noctua NH-U12S
2x 8GB DDR4 2333MHrz
Asus Z170-A
1x 7200RPM HDD
1x SSD
No water cooling, about 4x 120mm fans.

Hoping the 650W will be enough, also factor in if I exchange the 1070 out for potentially 1080 Ti in the future (assuming what the power usage will be from that)
>>
>>57756754
you cant emulate on amds. 2 core with max IPC is what you need since pcsx cant even use more
>>
>>57756808
650W is enough for any single-GPU system, pretty much. Unless you're doing something exotic, the only reason you'd need more is if you're planning to use multiple GPUs.
>>
>>57756808
650 if you aren't planning to overclock, watercool, or have multiple cards. Fans and ssd don't need much power.
>>
>>57756859

Overclocking a 1070 wouldn't require much power would it?
>>
>>57756754
Nope. Need more IPC than whatever AMD has out but like other anon said it only really needs to be dual core since that's all PCSX2 can do. I think Dolphin can use a third thread but it's generally more forgiving than PCSX2 anyway. Also, there's also no such thing as mini atx.

An APU would be useless because the CPU isn't strong enough and a GPU is really just extra since all it really can be used for is upscaling the native resolution (which is nice but not necessary at all when you consider the original games ran at 480p).

So long story short is you shouldn't be giving recommendations if you don't know what you're talking about.
>>
>>57756912
I meant in tandem with watercooling. Overclocking with air only can only get you so far regardless.

Can anyone actually tell me the difference between PG279Q and MG279Q?

The PG is ROG Gaymer'TM' oriented and I don't want that to be the reason for it's price point. They're both 144 1440p IPS monitors, the PG has got G Sync but I'm not interested in that, even though I will have an Nvidia card anyway.
>>
>>57757057
The PG has G-Sync (nvidia) as the adaptive sync while the MG has the open standard Free Sync (AMD).

The panels themselves are likely identical. So, you're basically paying for G-Sync, which in my opinion is pretty overrated if you care about actually pushing your FPS over 100 in games that can support it and you can realistically reach those levels.
>>
>>57757165

Thanks, I'm getting into the 144hz @ 1440p meme. I'm hoping my 1070 will be enough to get there.

Since there is a lot of talk about 144hz and 1440p.

I actually want to get a nice 1440p monitor that doesn't focus on 144hz or even have it. Since I'm not getting a 1080 or a Titan, I won't be able to hit 1440p and have 144hz.

>>
>>57757477
>>57757458
>>57757381

It was my understanding that if you had a 1070 and wanted to game at 144hz with a 1440p res, G-Sync would make that possible.

Whereas without G-sync you wouldn't even reach 144hz since the card isn't powerful enough.

On the transverse, if you have a super powerful card that pushes past 144hz at 1440p (future cards) it imposes stutter.

So G-Sync is really a utility to help weaker cards hit 144hz. Right?
>>
Is it worth paying an extra $70 to go from 4gb vram to 8gb?
>>
>>57757381
How about I certify my foot up your ass you stupid Nvidia tripshill. There is no basis for what you're saying unless you work for ASUS. There have been plenty of shit ROG G-meme panels shipped in the past.

>>57757526
>So G-Sync is really a utility to help weaker cards hit 144hz. Right?

Not even fucking close. Who told you this, some Geek Squad employee? lel

G-sync has nothing to do with altering whatever your maximum framerate can be. You need to read up on what adaptive sync actually is before you fall for an expensive meme. There is no stutter from having your GPU output more FPS than your refresh rate and if you GPU is being overworked putting out that many FPS that your screen can't even display then you can always just cap the FPS through your driver software.

>>57757577
Checked, but if you have to ask then no.
>>
>>57757577
I would say no unless you plan to keep the card for a while like 5 or more years awhile

>>
>>57757526
If your fps go above 144hz it effectively switches to vsync which introduces frame latency because the monitor can't keep up with the card and frames can be dropped or rendered late.

>>57757684
G-Sync is about making the gaming experience as smooth as possible, which includes the frame latency issues inherent in vsync and fixed refresh rates, but also includes other quality areas such as the screen's brightness and color reproduction.

ROG is entirely irrelevant in this context.

G-Sync is about extorting retards out of money. Freesync is a perfectly adequate industry wide open standard that isn't going anywhere. The only reason Nvidia can even play hardball with G-sync being a thing is because of their corner on the GPU market. It has nothing to do with G-sync being a superior technology for displays because it's not.

I prefer their MoBos to MSI. The build quality has always impressed me aside from the . MSI puts way too much unwanted bullshit all over their MoBos and calls them "features" (qualcomm killer NIC, SupremeFX sound, etc.)

Video cards they are generally pretty good, a small step below MSI.

In general their customer service sucks dick. I have seen cases of an RMA taking literal months, only to be sent back the exact same unit with the same problem. Generally speaking, if you have a problem with a Gigabyte product its best to get a refund and buy a different one.
>>
>>57758055
If you base your opinion solely on the theoretical ability of either tech there is very little difference.

My point is that FreeSync monitors are lower quality. If you took two panels and one said FreeSync and the other said G-Sync, you can be assured that the G-Sync monitor is high quality, with FreeSync, you can not.

Honest question. Do you actually work for Nvidia? >>
>>57758279
Do you believe that Freesync implementations with no quality control slapped onto a random panel are comparable to G-Sync monitors that are ran through a certification process?

Common no matter how you try to rationalize my ideas away they aren't opinions, they are fact. It isn't even about making a comparison between the two, its the fact that shitty FreeSync panels are all over the place and there are no shitty G-Sync ones period.

You're both full of shit. OEM brandwars based on your retarded anecdotes so fucking stupid. You both deserve to be kicked in the testicles for recommending one Taiwanese brand over another. They're all the same and mobos/graphics cards should be recommended on a per-item basis based on reviews or warranty, not because it's one brand versus another.

What's the best 1070 card? Thinking about EVGA SC or their FTW edition. Which, by the way, is actually less expensive than the SC edition rn on Amazon. Worth?

Also looking at a nice deal in one of MSI's cards that I found on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137046&cm_re=MSI_GTX_1070_Quicksilver_OC-_-14-137-046-_-Product

Any Z170 with a decent number of reviews should be fine. Over the years I've owned MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, ECS and they've all been fine with some hiccups along the way. ECS is the only brand I've never had to RMA and their considered low tier, so go figure. You want microATX obviously.

I don't plan on overclocking or anything of that sort and most people believe that the "thermal" issues were just a bad batch of capacitors in the first place.

If you're so against getting an EVGA card, then what would you personally recommend then?
>>
>>57760601
Its thermaltake.

In reality, thats probably a 500W supply, or will be in a year.

Capacitor aging on those things is embarassing.

Something like the SeaSonic S12II 620W would probably be more than enough. They have a modular version that's a few more bucks too if you'd rather that. Honestly you could get away with like a 500W EVGA if you wanted to go even cheaper.

>>57761219
Bro, I didn't have anything personal against EVGA until they were outed for skimping on those thermal pads. Had nothing to do with a bad batch of capacitors, there should have been some active cooling on those VRMs and they didn't do it. I'd avoid them this generation just for that when there are plenty of other options available. MSI is one company that at least hasn't been mired in controversy recently off the top of my head.

So I am connecting my power source to my computer.

My gpu has an 8 + 6 slot connectors. Can I use the single pcie cable with two ends to power that or do I need two cables? In the past I think I had powered 2 gpus with a single cable each.

I have an 8 and a 4 slot to power my cpu. At least that are in that area. Should I use two cpu 4+4 cables to make that connection?

Also how do I use a fan card. No idea how this works. As in how to power it. Wondering if it takes all its power from the mother board fan slot.

I have to use a fan card and have never done it before.

I will be pluging in 6 fans from the radiators 3x2 3 fans for 2 radiators each. They came with a triple splitter so they connect to it and each set leaves me with a single 4 pin connector for each so that is two.

I have 3 addition fans that came with the case i have installed in a new place just because positive air pressure. They have a single 4 pin and 2 3 pin connectors. I also have 2 4 pin connectors for a dual pump for the custom loop. Each power has one of the old original 4 pin perifial power connectors that I assume powers them while the 4 pins are for speed control.

I have two different fan controller cards I can use one that came with the case and one with the mobo. Going to add pictures in a second.

How the hell do I connect all of these to power them and have control. When I am done I will want to have basically everything running half speed since I over did the radiators for just that purpose.

tldr how do I use a fan controller extension

Also, the tower fan has a connection to the motherboard, then has another blocky connection. Does it matter if that's not connected because I can't see the matching piece.
