I need a used server for a sandbox. Will start with oracle dba training but I want it for a linux virtualization server in the end as there are going to be many other things to learn. Different serve os's and puppet right off the bat. Not to mention virtualization itself.
Looking at used servers and need advice. I can get used hp g7s and was wondering if there is someone who knows of any tips. What should I be looking for. The g7 has 4 cpus 6-8 cores each and that means i ton for oracle and virtualization split later. Plenty of memory. The har drives are not huge but I have a nas already which I am tired or trying to hobo oracle onto. Also oracle database has certain features that do not kick in until 16+ cores.
Anyone out there know the used server market? In the chicago suburbs here.

rogers park fag here, what are you looking to spend? I have a dual xeon e5-2650 system with on board dual 10GbE copper, 128gb ram, and a variety of disks I could include in it. and even more 10gbe SFP+ nics.

also has a 8 port 12gig sas hba. chassis has 8x 3.5" hotswap bays, 2 3.5" non-hot swap bays, dual 920 watt PSUs

also you do know that database apps are generally far more i/o intensive than CPU intensive, so using a NAS wont help you, you'll want SSDs. and that a quad socket box will eat tons of power and in your setup the primary benefit of it would being able to have more RAM than compute?
pic related is my ESXi box, as you can see CPU isnt really used much but memory is. with that said I also have RDIMMs I could sell as well if you only need them

anyways since it seems like you're AFK if you're interested send me an email at [email protected]

Why not rent from OVH or Kimsufi?
There is no need to buy a quad socket machine for a database. Assemble a whitebox.
