Got this PowerMac 7600/120 from craigslist for $20 bucks.
Not even interested in the PowerMac itself, just got it for the keyboard, mouse and monitor and some parts like the floppy drive and VRAM for my Quadra.

My father had a similar 286 Toshiba with the same amber plasma screen. I remember there was no battery and it was loud as fuck for a "portable" computer.

Amber on black text was really good for reading comfort though.
>>
>>57735643
I can relate to that, I got a similar model for xmas once, when I was a kid, it was a quite old machine for that time already, mid 90's.
I didn't care, I could play DOS games on it.
>>
>>57735607
Actually, it's not that bright at all. It's just B/W with no shades in between. We installed a terminal web browser but the baud rate we set was so high, it would render pictures in plain binary. It took 4+ minutes to render Google.

>>57742250
Fuck you. This made me cry.
>>
>>57742516
Minitel... I need to remember that, it's a pretty unknown part of history that I only have vague knowledge of. Sweden almost had something like that, because youth figured out that if multiple people called the same unused telephone number during the analogue times then they could speak with people for free. There was up to hundreds of people calling the same phone number, must have been crazy... Only interrupted once in a while by a "this phone number is not in use" recording. Once thousands of people decided to meet up from several of these phone numbers at once and it freaked out the police because they did not know what was going on.

After that they blocked it and made it a paid service. They also talked about doing something like France with the Minitel, but then Internet came.

Maybe someone watching this thread can give me a hand.

I recently got an old ThinkPad 570 with a dock for free. It's Pentium II 233MHz, 192MB RAM model with an 18GB HDD and both a DVD-ROM and floppy drive in the dock. At some point, the previous owner installed Windows XP on it and it runs super slow. I'm trying to install Windows 98 via an ISO burned to a DVD. The 570 can see the DVD and launch it from Explorer where I get the splash screen with stuff like "discover Windows 98!" but no option to start an install. I tried changing the boot order to use the DVD drive first, and it spins up on boot, but then it just boots into Windows XP.

What do? Should I format the HDD in the laptop first so that there's no OS there at all?

Don't force it, take the easy way out. You will need a 3.5" disk with the Windows 98 Boot disk which will load the CD drive for you, or use freedos to boot. Either your media is no good or it simply won't boot from CD.

protip: before installing, copy the WIN98 folder from the cd onto the hdd, then run setup from there
since you have the hdd space to spare (~250M extra) it will save you time later on

win9x doesn't copy a lot of optional stuff over when installing to save space, when you go to install certain things like drivers, you often get prompted to insert the cd so it can fetch more files
if you install win9x from a folder on the hdd though, the data is always there, and you won't ever be prompted for the cd

If there's still a retro thread tomorrow evening I'll post some pics. Right now I don't have any where to permanently set them up. I'll have to figure out what I'm selling and what I'm keeping out of my whole collection.

>>57749656
I should have clarified that the drives I listed were all external. The 7500 has a 4gb internal drive (seems fine) and the 9600 has three internal drives, one is 30gb. 9600 also has working Zip drive and I found one Zip disk in a box, working. Haven't touched those since...96?

Also found a 1gb bare SCSI in a box.

By the end of the night all of the drives seemed fine, passed Disk First Aid, and behaved well while I explored. I'm hoping the two that were slow/clicky at first just needed to warm up for a minute after all these years.

Also found the old 601 processor card to the 7500 in a box. It wasn't protected and clearly got tossed around so I won't risk trying it out and blowing the motherboard, nor selling it to someone and blowing their stuff. I'm going to pop the CPU and keep it.

Still works, boots faster than my octo core Mac Pro that has 31,000 times the RAM and and SSD...guess you'll never beat out the speed of soldered on ROMs.
>>
>>57749712
I might just do that with the 9600 and redistribute its disks across other machines.

Kind of want to max the RAM on the 9600 as well since I read it can take 1.5gb. Though I wonder if OS 9 can even see that?
>>
>>57750217
ROMs and a tiny OS. A lot of web pages link in more bytes of JavaScript then it took for System 6, ROM and Finder+System.

Pajeet literally needs more space to animate a menu and display an ad then the Macintosh team needed for an entire fucking OS.
>>
>>57750227
It can. The MDD G4 can take 2.0GB and was the last machine to boot OS 9. That being said, OS 9 can't address over 1.5GB, and individual applications have a 1GB ceiling.
>>
>>57750198
Just do a eye chcek on the card and che k if there are any chorts with a multimeter.

I'd try it out even without testing it, pretty impossible for it to blow out anything else then itself, it would be way worse just trashing it, no matter how bad it looks.
>>
>>57750217
It's platform specific assembly on a ROM with a direct bus to the CPU and RAM, there's nothing faster then that.
>>
>>57750187
>censoring everything Apple.

You sure? I would HATE to lose the motherboard because I got curious and tried it out.

>it would be way worse just trashing it, no matter how bad it looks.

I would be keeping the 601 because it looks cool. I would hate to trash something that could keep another 7500 alive. But CPU upgrade cards were so common for the series that anyone who has a dead CPU can pick up a faster one off eBay.
>>

Yeah sadly ASM just isn't a thing anymore unless you are coding for things like Z80, etc. would be real interesting to see a modern implementation with flashable EEPROM with DMA and direct CPU bus though, I'd love to see how it stacked up to things like PCIE SSD's.
>>
>>57750478
>lol but bandwidth and hardware is cheap just buy a new computer and upgrade your internet package poorfag

I have FIOS and my main rig doesn't have a problem with anything on the web. But it's pathetic when a modern iPhone or iPad or an older computer stutters because Rajeesh can't be bothered to write efficient code.

>Sounds like we should go back to that.

Then we have to have efficient code. Not 5MB worth of frameworks for the web equivalent of hello world.
>>
>>57750628
>Then we have to have efficient code
Fuck that, developers are way to lazy, why waste time being efficient when we have shitloads of resources to waste?

You really think any developer would do overtime for the same pay or any company would pay more for "efficient code" when normies won't give a fuck anyways and nobody is going to judge them? As long as they don't loose anything with shit code, they won't care, money talks. :^)
>>
>>57750611
There'd be no money to be made
>buy raspberry pi for £30
>it's 10x as fast as the thing you spend many times as much on
>>
>>57750611

The ROMs in the SE aren't fast. They're on a 16-bit 8 MHz bus. PCIE SSDs are like the Enterprise-E at maximum warp versus the SE ROMs which are Mercury program rockets.

But the size of the OS, relative to the bandwidth available, is far superior. It would take 1/64 second to transmit the core OS over the SE main bus. It would take several seconds to do the same with OS X off a PCIE SSD.

Yes OS X does a hell of a lot more. But efficient code is a lost art.
>>
>>57750684
>You really think any developer would do overtime for the same pay or any company would pay more for "efficient code" when normies won't give a fuck anyways and nobody is going to judge them?

Well, that's the problem with the industry right now. But your statement "we should go back" contradicts your statement "fuck that waste resources." You can't have your cake and eat it to.
>>
>>57750731
>But your statement "we should go back" contradicts your statement "fuck that waste resources."
It doesn't, we just don't need as powerful machines for browsing facebook or using Word as we do right now.
Great hardware would still be used for gaming and encoding, etc.

The whole point of this argument is to have the cake and eat it.
>>
>>57750693
A lot of RISC OS is is written in assembly, so some things are lightning fast. Like it boots to a fully usable desktop is something like 2 seconds, but will take a million years to start FireFox.
>>
>>57750708
>The ROMs in the SE aren't fast. They're on a 16-bit 8 MHz bus.
But they are only 512KB, the bus speed is even faster than 512KB/s. More than enough.

SD2SCSI is good for those old 68000 Macintoshes that have a drive controller that's slow anyways, because the SD2SCSI is only 2.5MB/s itself. While a new SCSI drive like that maxes easily out my machines 6MB/s controller.

What are some good late 90s laptops /retro/ recommends?

I'm looking for something for DOS gaming and possibly to try installing a Linux distro for the lulz.

Nah, way too new for those, just a seagate ATA drive in a bay adapter.

Was hoping for a SCSI drive, and they pulled the original 240MB disk out too, damn.

I often joke about making a troll video but it's already been made and it's this one.

>"you need three whole separate laptops"
>knows about dosbox and chooses not to use it
>"there's just something about" - translates to "muh feel".
what something about? say what it is missing. why can't you be specific? could it be that there's nothing?

>balding 40 year old loser
>fat as fatass 40 year old turd friend to keep each other dumb and blind to anything new
>circlejerking table set up

these are the types of people I'd choose to make a troll hate video about this meme phenomenon. another anon said it best

Yes.

I want an old Power PC. Hate modern Macs, but the platinum era Macs are just comfy. I can't imagine using an old PC or Amiga for writing or something, but the old Macs were so aesthetic.

I saw it months ago when he published it. You guys were doing pretty good as you were at least self aware but now you're basically aspiring to be this.

Similar thing is an N64 "hack" that was "just found" with a gameshark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDiHgKil8AQ

the guy's voice, is so desperate, and he's so fat. Also notice how he doesn't even respond to or acknowledge not only emulators, but ANYTHING made "after the 90s". The kicker is he still looks like he's in his early 20s.

Try to make the connection that you can do this at any age, 20s or 40s, but this meme phenomenon is being accelerated by circlejerks like this in which you think you're fitting in.

>>57758461
Yeah I need to go make an infographic for this.

Yeah pretty much, looks alright from the front still too especially after a little bezeltism, think I have another matching HP seagate drive to stick in it too.

Maybe I'll roll it back to a DX2-50 while I'm at it, I've already got some real tricked out socket 3 gear that would probably make better use of that chip anyway.

The two player parts were cringy as fuck but otherwise it was an OK video for anyone interested in old PCs.

But what I would like to see is a video that explains why some people feel the need to shit all over other people's hobbies.

Why do people find shit like that cringy? They where trying their best at acting and I had a kek about it.

>But what I would like to see is a video that explains why some people feel the need to shit all over other people's hobbies.
You don't need a video about that, it's also not about hobbies but about being a general dildohead.

It's pretty obvious that you can emulate 90s stuff on most post-2000 systems. Still, running an (imperfect) emulation of some software in a window on a modern screen is entirely different from getting original hardware to work and run the software on that.
>>
>>57759934
Who gives a fuck about emulators.
I can't do even half the software sided shit on them, not to mention hardware hacks.

Someone mentioned something like this to me the other day. I think he has one somewhere. He said the small LCD showed information about the display mode. When he told me about it, he mentioned a brand name (which I can't recall right now) and I googled for an image, but could not find anything relevant despite my best efforts.

You're right - It IS different from the original - it's much, MUCH better.

Ever played a 2D game on a TV that's bigger than a 12 inch CRT? the pixels are about 2 inches. Emulators have this thing called "supereagle", it makes it work on any res or any size TV. (nerd flip shit psuedo rage goooo!)

>"but it's wrong because its differ-net and I can't afford anything besides a 30 year old 12 inch crt anyway so this doesn't apply to me"

3D games - literally any res or ratio you want.

"b-but these things weren't in the o-original"

In the case of dolphin and pcsx2 they were, you flip a switch to get 4x internal res - this time, it DOESN'T downscale and you get the shit that they made and was there the entire time.

Also can have the entire 2D library and all the 3D games you want on a portable laptop.

Also netplay. Also you can get usb adapters to take real, oem controllers so you do in fact get "muh feel".

I have to tell you these things because you've chosen to ignore everything made in the past 15 years.
