It was a simpler time. Back when the web browser wasn't 90% of what a computer was used for because dial-time could get pretty expensive real fast, so I remember saving a shit load of stuff as soon as I could, then hanging up, then reading/watching/looking at it offline.

Good joke. The second some big fun thing happens you can bet that reddit will be all over it and fuck it up, and since 4chan is so normie and watched like a hawk now a bunch of "news" articles and hashtags on twitter will pop up within a day and the fun will be over before it even began.

The joy of the internet back in the day was it was oblivious, and 4chan was a scary place full of jailbait, muddy dicks and injokes so deep if you tried to join in without lurking you'd get called the fuck out in seconds.

That shit doesn't happen anymore. People are too dumb to realise that being friendly and helpful to ever person that walks into a thread doesn't help integrate, it just allows retards to come in without opposition and wreck the fun for everyone. Lurking fucking worked, but 4chan is too big and too far gone for that to work anymore. /a/ has the right idea, even though I barely visit it at least I'm glad they hung onto that aspect of old 4chan.

In 4th year now and we cover so much fluff like web design, backends, muh cloud computing, ruby, web frameworks.

Then there's hadoop, NoSQL shit and stuff I could barely give a fuck about.

I assume from 1970-2000 most CS courses were just C/C++ and rigorous programming standards?

It was complete and unusable shit, broken links, shitty loser internet culture, secret clubs, IRC and BBS were jerk happy over ban wars now that nerds/dropouts/losers were finally given power via admin channel levels.

Then 20 years passed and during this nothing time, losers and spergs retroactively removed all the bad memories, leading to this really weird and gay but very very specific and cancerous phenomenon about people pining for the "the good ol' days" yet paradoxically can't even talk about them since to do so would force them to admit they were shit which is why you see so much shit flinging whenever you bring up this turd burger topic: they don't want to admit it was shit, so they can never talk about it.

Continuing the paradox they insist that the modern internet must be run by whomever happened to show up first. Then we actually ask them what it should be like, but they won't let themselves remember it, right? So the answer is "document processing". This is a perfect quantum bullshit psuedo answer which does and doesn't check all the above boxes and roughly translates to "I'm a fucking loser and think I'm better than you for being a fucking loser."

If BBS turds and usenet shits were allowed to run the internet, you'd see a catatonic level of censorship, far above and beyond any infamous tumblr tier censoring. The fundamental building block of shits like this is that they don't really care about technology at all besides its ability to let them pretend they matter and ban everyone from their obscure circlejerk IRC channel.

>>
>>57732324

Goes without saying but all the meme bullshit and crap didn't exist in 1998. People weren't infected with that cancer yet.

The internet actually forced people to learn how to communicate.. then 2ch/4chan introduced image based communication. Then circa 2009ish I guess? normies got in on everything.

Remember when we thought memes would never reach Facebook?

Man.. watching this makes me really sad in a lot of ways. We really ruined things.

I was born in 1991 but didn't have regular internet access until 2006. My parents didn't want to be bothered by work while they were at home and pretty much held out until they were issued Blackberries and were more or less expected to be connected all the time.

The funny thing about this was we had computers way earlier than most of my friends. My parents dropped a good amount of cash on an IBM PC350 in the fall of 1996, shit was cutting edge at the time (166 MHz Pentium, 16 megs of RAM and a 1.6 GB hard drive). That machine replaced a Macintosh LC which went to me, and for a few years I was the cool kid in school for actually having a computer in my room. But I never really got to experience the early internet- what little I was able to get, I got from friends' houses, school or the public library. I want to feel like I missed a lot, but all I seem to remember are lots of broken links and pages which were always "under construction".

I do have to say, it was quite jarring going from no internet at all to 15 Mbps always-on service. Started an addiction which continues to this day.

I remember first time I went on the internet in 1997. I soon learned that humanity was completely depraved. The amount of perversity and evil people had in them was shocking and surprising for someone who lived pretty much their whole childhood without the internet. The internet was completely wild west, the stuff on Tor was on the regular internet. You could be exposed to all sorts of stuff when you searched on Altavista (which was my favorite search engine before google). I had a geocities page and a page on another free webpage service that started with an 'x'. Can't remember.

Websites was much easier to code back then before CSS.

I actually came here in 2005 from Newgrounds of all places.

IIRC, there was a banner ad (remember when they did those) of moot's cat-girl persona - the one that wears nothing but a t-shirt and panties. Since I was a horny 13 year old back then, I clicked it, and went to /h/, the very first board I visited.

I was part of the underage cancer that plagued 4chan in the mid 2000's, but I would do everything in my power to relive those days.

this

Also people did stuff out of passion rather than for profit. Hence all the weirdos. But there was something to be said for it, the content was fresher and of a higher quality I think, just because it was what someone actually felt not just an opinion-piece made with the sole intent of maximizing viewership/profit. People didnt really make much on websites then (if they weren't actually selling something), if anything they lost, they just did it because they loved it. There also was no "youtube"-type website where you can watch pretty much everything relevant on the internet in one place, you had to look around

I wouldn't hire a pajeet to cut my lawn yet most companies hire them in some cases for highly payed stooges they can dump on when needed.

Modern corporate entities are where humanity goes to die essentially. Our entire economy is now based off complete materialism, hence everything is so fucking expensive.

My parents bought a house in 1989 for $40,000.. they had combined earnings of $30,000 and they were the uneducated, no college degree or qualification at all. They did terribly in school.

it is now worth $1mil. I have probably no chance of affording my own one period. Yet I'm finishing a bsc in cs next year and I have no idea what the job market I'm going to walk out into will be like.

Honestly the world went to shit for normal people a long time ago.

It's a world of pajeets, cucks xfactors, lady gagas, and fucking human trash.

The average girl you meet is a complete bimbo or a petulant child, one or the other in most cases.

Video games, RIP. HL3 never. Movies are trash for the most part. TV shows are quickly becoming cancer too.

Vast majority of normal lads I meet just have disconnected from the world, and have dived into an online community never to return in all likelihood.

My theory is that pretty much every generation the good men either fight and die or they basically get fucked over. Going back as far as the crusades. WW1, entire generations wasted, fags later said Britain should have never defended Belgium etc. WW2, honored but basically spurned in the 60s by whingey shits saying bombing Japan was a war crime etc. Vietnam guys fucked over by the government, called babykillers. This generation was WMDs but at least for a while the public weren't cunts to vets.

Finally feels like now good men have just given up. Surrounded by cucks, corporate shills, and women telling them they're the root of all evil. We're now entering a new age with Trump coming in. Trump is the good men saying "fine, this is what you get without us".

I don't know why people suddenly decided to just give up this national pride in regards to their buying, but I know that as soon as that precedence was set then the globalisation train went full tilt.

I remember a program on this where the presenter had an American, a British, and a Japanese hi-fi, and said that the American and British hi-fis produced a much better sound than the Japanese one, and that if you played with the knobs and dials for a day you might just get it sounding nearly as good...But it was also 1/4 the price of the other two.

>That bottom loading bar
I... I forgot....

What can I tell you OP, it was new and exciting. Slow, but rarely did I get mad over it.

I remember once needing printer drivers for my HP printer, so I disconnected the phone line, dialed-up with my 56k modem, and started downloading and went to bed because the time estimate was many hours (20 megabytes)

I woke up in the morning, download was corrupted, and dad got pissed off because he knew the phone bill would be high.

When I got ADSL, my world changed.. We used a filter (as we called them) to split the phone and internet lines, and got hundreds of kilobytes of speed per second, which was AMAZING. I downloaded tons of porn from Kazaa, and all kinds of MP3's labeled wrong and shit.

I remember playing online games like Counter Strike and Quake on a program called "The All Seeing Eye" that had the green Illuminati triangle icon. If I ever got banned from a server (I never cheated, but some mad admins thought I did) I would simply reset my IP address because there were no Steam accounts or anything like that back then.

Shit I remember how excited I got over buying my first 52X CD BURNER, we would copy games all day, I even sold some at school.

To be fair to the asians they found their market and cornered it.

The thing that worries me most is the quality of American or British products in modern times. Very few people strive for quality these days.

I'll pickup my Gibson guitar every now and then between work. It always blows me away the craftsmanship of it, I just so rarely see that attention to detail in any other products these days.

The quality also is reflected in the sound. I also have some strat beginner chinese copycat that in comparison has aged horribly and sounds terrible.

Yes one was $100 vs $600. However I'd say comfortably the Gibson has kept me playing vs the chink strat which required grim determination to make the sound palatable at all.

You seem irrationally upset and bitter. Are you still scarred from some flamewar or being banned from IRC? You are hugely exaggerating when you whine about the shitty culture and being broken and unusable.
I was there 20+ years ago. There is a tiny grain of truth in some of your straw man arguments, but it's really not at all representative of what the overall experience was like.
People often have a rose-tinted view of the past but it's not without good reason. I genuinely do think that the internet and BBSes were, in many ways, a much nicer place to be before the any 'asshole can come' era, and I'm far from alone in that belief. I got to know lots of great people on the other side of the world, we'd write long emails to each other, collaborate on things just for the hell of it and exchange cool stuff we'd downloaded.
The signal to noise ratio on the internet of today is the complete opposite. People's attention spans and attitudes are completely addled by this snarky, hostile, instant gratification culture we have now.

well in the US national pride took a hit during the W Bush administration because it was hard to be proud when the government was actively doing the wrong thing. You could be proud of WW2. Vietnam was a horrible conflict but it's conflict and put down fueled 80's machismo. (tons of 80s action flicks are basically, just about the US winning vietnam analogues with manly macho men to fight against how hurt Americas macho image was)

but in the iraq "war on terror" it was hard to be proud when the government was stripping freedoms, and the whole war was purposely on falsehoods, or how it came out that prisoners of war were being abused and humiliated, etc etc.

the bush years killed national pride, and Obama has done nothing to fix it, instead swooping in to take advantage of how low it is. Coupled with the fact that its almost impossible to buy American because everything is made in china. If you're lucky its made in Malaysia.

Even the stuff made by other countries is made in china. Germans used to be known for their engineering, Japan for their electronics. Now? both are made in china garbage. which also reduces any sort of distinctiveness between different countries products.

this. the structure of the internet as we know it, was shaped by the .com boom in the 90's.

and since the .com bubble burst, the internet has been getting smaller as the winners get bigger, and consolidate, (remember when Yahoo and Verizon used to be separate companies? Remember when Google didn't own Youtube?) while smaller moderate successes and losers fizzle out in the face of the increasingly stiff competition.

toss in social media, and you get the webbing that starts to hold the giants together. or something like that. without some kind of second .com boom or comparable alternative, the internet will only get smaller.

this extends to computer software too. Remember when there were dozens of web browsers or search engines?

Does starting about 2004 count? It's not old but it's where I started.

I would do nothing but play Newgrounds games on our 3mbps DSL. I made some small websites that were supposed to be big huge things but I just knew basic HTML at the time. It was wonderful and bad. Still have some on a flash drive. I wish I still had all my emails. My Steam account got taken over in early 2010 somehow or another (think it was from a sketchy keygen) so all my emails disappeared before that point. Gmail wiped from May 2010, Hotmail from December 2010 (on my own accord).

I ran a Garry's Mod server in 2006 up until the 2007 update came out and my PC would BSOD when looking at certain stuff. Got back in at around 2009 when I got my first actual gaming PC. Ran Windows Vista before SP1 because I was cool. Still have that PC somewhere, GPU is broke. Quit that in 2010 after a solid server I went on for about a year went down. The Gmod community got real gross a year later, so good riddance I guess? Gmod and other source mods/maps were far better before 2010 or so.

YouTube going from 4:3 to 16:9 was real weird. Streaming 1080p for the first time on a 1024x768 monitor was cool too. Hated every single change they made (removing messages/notification box on front page, comments under the video, title under the video, removing the dropdown for other videos by user, removing yellow upload button, new logo, various layout changes, google+, 60fps[internet is still shit, can do 720p but not 720p60 lol]) but boy were they good decisions. Old YouTube is hard to look at.
>>
>>57739308
I would argue that old youtube had more character though.
>>
>>57739597
sure, but the reaction to all the layout changes was so bad you thought YouTube wouldn't exist a year later. turns out those old layouts were kinda fucked

the only change I still don't like is subscribers not being the main page, but I see why they did it

During the ate '80s I spent most of my online time on the newsgroups. There were newsgroups for everything, including CP.
No browsers, of course, so it was all telnet, gopher and FTP. JPGs were too big (at 36.6kbs) and so everything was a GIF. It could take you an hour to download a file that turned out to be a pic of a tree.

JPG didn't have a size problem, it just displayed incredibly slowly on earlier machines.

Also 33.6kbps was mid/late-90s tech, nowhere near 80s. It could download a 200k JPG in about a minute. (And you sure as hell weren't downloading and viewing multi-MB JPGs with the tiny hard drives and display res of the era)
