>>
What is this "seedbox"?
>>
>>57725056
it's a little box you keep seeds in
>>
No, seedboxes are for retards.
>>
>>57725047
THE MOVIE ROSS, THE MOVIE
>>
>>57725134
why's that?
>>
>>57725047
I just seed torrents 24/7 with my home connection but if i were to live in a police state like the US where you go to jail for torrenting and datacaps are a thing yeah it would be a good idea.
>>
>>57725047
No.

I do have a virtual server configured as a seedbox tho.
>>
>>57725203
>virtual server configured as a seedbox
the fuck is that, aren't all servers virtual? (srs)
>>
>>57725047
Living in the US, so god damn right I got a seedbox, used it to download torrents from public trackers because who has time for /ptg/ "muh secret club" bullshit just to download something you want to try or hear.
>>
>>57725218
A server running a hypervisor running many different smaller virtual servers with different OSs and jobs.
>>
>>57725255
That's really fucking cool honestly

uh, do you you speak normie?

also whats the point of that?
>>
>>57725255
Was it a lot of work to set up? Does it need maintainance?
>>
>>57725284
>also whats the point of that?

Cheaper scalability

>>57725297
please I just want to understand
>>
>>57725296
No and no.

Think of it just as a virtual machine, one virtual machine running a webserver, one a fileserver, one a game server, etc.

This >>57725297
Also ease of use. So much better then having different machines or having one server configured to do several things.
>>
>>57725316
If you use virtual machines (emulate) other computers in one more powerful computer, you can sell the use of those virtual machines as virtual private servers.

A seedbox is a single use type of VPS that will offer you basically a torrent client with a web GUI accessible through your browser, and FTP access to the data for you to download the data onto your computer.
>>
>>57725406
>emulate
Virtualize*

Bitch please.
>>
>>57725421
He's trying to speak normie
>>
>>57725421
are you seriously trying to say there is a difference? a VM is simply emulating a x86 machine.
>>
>>57725478
A VM is virtualizing the host machine's hardware.
Emulation is emulating different hardware than the host.

Seriously, don't embarrass yourself.
>>
>>57725478
>a VM is simply emulating a x86 machine
why would you emulate an architecture when you can virtualize it? wasy faster
>>
>>57725492
Literally different ways of saying exactly the same thing. The hardware the VM sees isn't yours, its the VM.
>>
>>57725507
What I am saying is virtualization and emulation are just different words for exactly the same task.
>>
>>57725511
Two very different things.
Also the CPU the VM sees is directly the host's CPU, that's what virtualization is about and why it's better and faster. You can't even virtualize if the CPU does not support it. You can emulate though.
We even have passthrough now, you can even assign hardware directly to a VM.
>>
>>57725539
You can't virtualize a PowerPC machine on a x86 machine, you can emulate it though and vise versa.
Emulation is directly creating all the hardware in software, while virtualization is just sharing the host hardware.
>>
>>57725543
Then what do you call a Window VM on a PPC computer?
>>
>>57725577
A emulated environment.
It's a virtual machine that's being emulated and not virtualized.
>>
>>57725563
>>57725543
>>57725507

If what yall are saying is true, then why are VMs as slow now as they were when you were trying to recreate x86 on PPC or vice versa?
>>
>>57725539
are you serious? kek

>>
>>57725603
A virtualized x86 VM on a x86 host is exactly as fast as the native host when it comes to CPU.

Emulated VM will never be as fast as the host.
>>
>>57725668
Am I using the wrong software or something??

Currently got a x220 with a i5 and the last time I tried to run a Win95 VM it was painfully slow.

Not sure what I used now it was Virtualbox or MS VirtualPC
>>
Qemu, Bosch, PearPC, Basilisk II, ShapeShifter, VirtualPC, those are all emulators.

Qemu KVM, VMware, VirtualBox, those are all hypervisors.
>>
>>57725713
>Virtualbox or MS VirtualPC
VirtualPC for Windows and Virtualbox both use hardware virtualization, they should run just fine, You probably did do something wrong.
>>
How would a Burgerclap such as myself go about setting up a seedbox and getting away with it?

Wow congratulations on wasting so much fucking resources. Learn to use FreeBSD jails you cpu whore
>>
>>57725764
pick a provider in Sweden or Holland or something
sign up
pay them (in a perfect world using some kind of anonymous method, but really you'll be fine if you just paypal them)
set up the torrent and SFTP client of your choice
download stuff
>>
>>57725200
Data caps are pretty much only for satellite internet while Comcast and AT&T are the only ones who give a shit about monitoring your peer to peer activity.

You're fine as long as you don't go full retard selecting your ISP or live in Dicksticks, Nowhere.
>>
>>57725784
listen dude, i wasnt born knowing everything: I am still dubious about it, probably I haven't virtualized a machine the right way. it will be a project for later.
>>
>>57725834
>Wow congratulations on wasting so much fucking resources. Learn to use FreeBSD jails you cpu whore
No waste at all, plus extra cache and network options you can't even do natively.
FreeBSD jails are uselessly over complicated for the job and most of the software isn't even available for it.

>>57726035
I don't even know what to say about this. This is why the USA is not a first world country. God help you.
>>
>>57725047
Yes and depends. If you wanna get/are in a private tracker and you have a shit internet connection, get a seedbox. Otherwise no, get a vpn if you're scared of lawyers/isp letters.
