DACs aren't a meme, there's a dac built into your phone in fact. What are a meme is external DACS.

Because your phone converts digital to analog, then the external dac turns the signal back into digital, then back out as analog.

Uhh no it doesn't. All external DACs connect to your device via digital connector and the phone sends the raw digital data for analog conversion.

The idea is that the external DAC can do a better job of the conversion than whatever you already have, but realistically anything more advanced than the $4 sound chip in your device isn't going to be that much better. You certainly won't find any difference between two external DACs.

What can make a difference is an external amplifier, depending on your headphones. Most mobile devices have pathetically weak amplification for anything less sensitive than in-ears or some on-ear phones. You could crank the volume up but it'll sound harsh and tinny till your ears bleed.

It's a meme. You wouldn't notice a legitimate difference unless you're plugging in $1000 headphones, and if that's the case, that means you're concerned about audio quality. If you're concerned about audio quality, why are you listening to music from your phone in the first place?
It defeats its own purpose.

maybe you just don't hear it. It's subtle, and some people don't even hear difference between $40 headphones and $200 ones unless it's something like super loud bass.

it's also possible that dacs are bullshit, i never used "smartphone dac". There is noticeable difference between various classes of computer soundcards though, and that's basically DAC.

Well some works if they are high spec because the audio quality in Android phones is subpar by design and can't be fixed.

DAC/Headphone amp combo is a necessity for the desktop. Why the fuck would you get one for your phone?
