Not for most users. You really only need more than 8gb of RAM if you're using multiple VMs, video/audio editing, or CAD. Otherwise you're wasting your money.

It's perfectly fine. Both my work and home computer has 16GB of ram, and my work computer has slots for another 16GB.

The difference is I can't work effectively without that much RAM since I often have multiple JVM programs and a Windows VM running.
