Check the copypasta stuff in OP for the shell pasta. In my very holy opinion, when it comes to shell stuff, Greg's wiki is the only good ressource to read. There are so many books full of failures like examples with uppercase variables, useless use of cat, etc. Greg's wiki is simply ebin. Also good: http://www.grymoire.com/Unix/ This guy can teach you sed, awk and regex and you'll actually understand it and become a true wizard.

i am considering to actually try gentoo. do you have to compile software that you want to use in it? or do you only compile gentoo itself for installation/updating?

Hi, so im still on this arch to USB install... well ended up using YUMI and am noob lost... usually i follow the instructions on the wiki, but i guess yumi does more than i am aware of.

Partitions are created and mounted and just ran the pacman -Syu... which begs the question where am i on the arch install according to their wiki?

anyone please direct me to where i need to continue or pick up at?

Use Mint as long as it works for you. If something happened(TM) come back. The problem with Mint is basically that it doesn't get security updates and if you enable them manually, you can break it. That's why people recommend not to use Linux Mint..

>>57709340
I'm not, but I don't support developers who support nonfree software. I'm aware that I can add a license filter, which is cool, but
a) it should be default
b) devs shouldn't recommend and give instructions to install malware
>>
>>57709370
nah it shouldn't be anything but what the devs decide. i'm glad they aren't so retarded as to stop other people who need malware from installing it just because of a few autists like you who can't control their compulsions to install all the software they see (a habit from their windows days)
that's according to your shitty opinion and nobody really cares about that especially not the people involved in maintaining gentoo so yeah, tough luck buddy
>>
>>57709440
What do you think about this article: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Skype

It would be okayish if they would add a disclaimer and inform the users about surveillence and PRISM, or at least warn them and add link, but they don't.
>>
>>57709475
i'm sure it's fine as most articles on that wiki, the arch wiki is overall better though
you have to be literally brain dead to not know about this beforehand. or are you really telling me someone is going to install a niche distro and not know this? i guess they deserve it then.
i don't think people should be prohibited from doing harm to themselves if they really are that retarded.
>It would be okayish
why do you think your arbitrary metric matters here? why do you think you can prohibit people from installing something they want even if it's total shit.
you can tell them about it, no need to try and stop them from downloading it since that isn't going to work anyway and you'll just make yourself look like a retard, which wasn't that hard to begin with
>>
nigger, you can jump out of the window right now, but would you recommend it to your kids and tell them exactly how to do it, so they die whatever happens? there are things that are cool and there are things that aren't cool and things that arent cool is spreading buttcheeks for the nsa in the holy name of gentoo

How can you take a screenshot by selecting a rectangle, and not leave that inverted line on the left and top?

For example, scrot and
import -quality 100 -window root -crop $(xrectsel) +repage "/tmp/out.png"

do it.
>>
>>57709843
read the copypasta in OP and check the screenshot pasta
there are basically 3 solutions
a) kill your compositor
b) use xrectsel
c) find a program with hacks (locking the X11 selections will give you clean screenshot but also lead to faggotry)

Your best bet is to use the screemshooter your DE ships, since they're basically all c tier.
>>
>>57709673
>but would you recommend it to your kids and tell them exactly how to do it,

Torvalds actually dislikes GPLv3 (says, GPLv3 should be a new licence, not an upgrade).

Long story short:
GPLv2 had a grayzone, which allowed people to ship hardware with GNU/Linux systems, which had restrictions, eg: you could run the system, check the source, but you can't change the source and/or run your own version. Hashchecks fordbit that. More about the topic here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivoization
GPLv3 got related upgrades, that make sure that GPL software has all 4 freedoms https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html even in such systems. Torvalds thinks, that it restricts the developers freedoms, while RMS thinks, such restrictions restrict the users freedoms.

So I'm pretty sure this is going to be a no, but is there any way to run a gtk 3.12.0 application inside of my gtk 3.10.8 environment (Mint 17.3 MATE)? Even if I have to hack something a great deal, I'd like to do so. I can't update this system to Mint 18.

The application is Fsearch, indexed instant searching similar to Everything search engine on Windows. It just doesn't have real time index file updates, from what I can tell. I'm mentioning this since it is a new program and I hear a lot of people missing a program like this in Linux.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a m istake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

I have a laptop that I use for downloading tv shows and watching tv shows.

I like to plug it into tvs even completely new tvs that I'll never use again, because of this I'm thinking of installing windows because it just werks. As in it automatically changes to the right audio channel, changes the display output and displays on the new screen in a normal resolution.

Anyone know a distro that works better preferably out of the box?

How do I go on about making my mouse cursor only work on one monitor?

Thinking about buying a raspberry pi or one of those credit card size computers to learn Linux. About time I try something new
>>
>>57713987
Sure if you want, a raspi is capable for more things. If you just wanna learn linux, install it on a VM and try it out.

Though, I would suggest installing it side by side your main OS and booting from it like a real OS to learn it the hard way because that is how I did it due to a slowass computer. Xubuntu is good.

I would suggest using the graphical interface, then trying to dip your toes into the command line (terminal.) From there.

Look in the OS settings from the GUI settings menu. If there is something you want to do that isn't there, look it up on a search website and find solutions. This is a good way to get to know the terminal and how to using it. I would also suggest typing down the commands instead of copying and pasting them into the console.

Good luck and have fun regardless of how you get to know the system, a raspi is good, but if you're a poorfag, just install it next to your main OS if you have space.

Hey /fglt/, I haven't used Linux as a desktop OS much, but I have years of experience with it on headless servers, both at work and at home.

What distro would you recommend for the following criteria? Ideally I'd like it to be Debian-based, since I'm very comfortable with Debian.
>works with Pascal (GTX 1080), proprietary drivers are acceptable
>multi-monitor taskbar support, can configure which windows to show on which taskbar (i.e. all of them, only the same monitor, etc.)
>configurable hotkeys for window management: move to adjacent monitors, tile windows to half/quarter of the screen
>some sort of searchable launcher for software
>no tearing on ANY monitor in desktop use
>stable/reliable
>ideally access to new software too, such as up to date browsers
I've tried a lot of the Debian-derived distros, but a lot of them either have the features I want but are unstable (Kubuntu) or are missing things. The desktop tearing seems to be pretty bad too, especially on my 2 secondary monitors.

OK, I'll give Debian with Gnome a shot. Last I tried Gnome was like 1 year ago on Ubuntu, IIRC back then I had tearing on my 2nd and 3rd monitor, but I hope they improved shit.

I also forgot to mention that some sort of high-DPI support would be nice, as my main screen is 4K 27". KDE had pretty much all the features I wanted, but it was so wonky it wouldn't even remember task bar/panel settings on reboot, fuck that shit.

I'm not worried about performance, rather features and perhaps more importantly than that the issue with tearing on my 2nd/3rd monitor.

I had another attempt at desktop Linux a few years back and the only way I could get reliable VSync on secondary monitors was with some option from AMD's proprietary driver, but I use NVIDIA now so that's obviously no longer something I can do. mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/boot

Anybody else here on Debian unstable with an nvidia card? A few days ago, I absentmindedly updated and broke the driver and now it's not letting me install it. It whines about depending on xorg-xserver-video-nvidia which depends on some other packages which can't be installed (namely, it seems the version of xserver-xorg-core being a bit too high or so).

When I was on windows I could turn my server on, navigate to the network center and open the server like a normal folder. No need to sign in, I could delete and move files and whatnot. I could stream media without even using plex or other software.

I installed kubuntu and now suddenly I need to sign in. I cannot stream from it, I can't even move or delete things, even though I have signed in with admin privileges I set on the server itself. it's FTP.

I just tried that program, setting the URi as
ftp://[email protected]:2100/

and it won't connect. I'm obviously not doing the right thing. I honestly have no fucking idea how networking behaves and I'm getting pretty rustled by the whole thing. trying to connect as a samba share won't even work. All I can do now is connect with FTP, copy the media I want onto my laptop and then watch it from there, which defeats the purpose of having a server.

>>57727120
Im using gigolo to mount samba shares for some reason the bult in networking in Dolphin doesn't work as well as gvfs

Script them yourself using a scripting language like python.

Why do you think a thread can be friendly? How can an inanimate, completely passive thing possibly be described as friendly?

I should've noticed that when I was scripting in it. So I guess you're wrong.

what do I need exactly to make this work? I read the README and they aren't clear, it just says the same thing here about a "qt installation"
>>
>>57727517
Use your package manager...
>>

oh wow, I didn't think that package would be in my repository. I saw a thread about it on another board and they linked to the sourceforge source of it, so I assumed it that was the only way to get it.

it goes through every phase like normal, including the "installing the system" one
about to finish installation
/cdrom/: Please insert the disc labeled: 'Debian GNU/Linux Jessie_8.6.0 amd64 CD in the Drive '/cdrom/' and press enter.

why is this installer so fucking awful
is there a solution to this?

Bit of a problem here. Should be a simple fix, but I can't seem to find it.

I installed CentOS 6, and I'm only getting video when my monitor is plugged into the motherboard dvi slot, my GPU slot is displaying nothing. I assume this is a driver issue, but I can't find any information about it online.

the process named in top suggest osx
the windows do look like gnome3 though, perhaps it's running under osx's X11 app

Yo, i have to make a usb boot drive to go into my windows install and copy a lot of files to another hdd since my windows install has stopped working and nothing is working. What distro is best for this?
>>
>>57728355
genuine question because i have only used debian based distros for everything, what is the appeal of centos, particularly with managing servers?
>>
>>57728415
RHEL
>>
>>57728415
desu, I only chose it because a lot of companies here in the US seem to use RHEL and centOS is the free alternative to that. Honestly looks pretty comfy. Used Ubuntu and Mint a bit in the past but never actually learned much besides basic apt-get shit.

You don't like seeing thumbnails of things before uploading? Having to select each file one at a time to see the thumbnail is a pain in the ass. It just seems like a bizarre oversight.

Use the openSUSE patched version of firefox with kmozillahelper. It might actually work with just kmozillahelper, be sure to have konqueror installed as that's what Kdialog uses to display thumbnails.
