Bought it for it's design, the fact that it was better than my previous phone (Xperia Play) and the 1440p screen caught my eye. This was before every other phone ran it.

So far I've had numerous replacement back covers, which the current one is held together with tape, a battery that I gotta charge twice to run a single day, crappy vanilla UI that loves to BSOD when installing AOSP, a volume rocker that loves to go down automatically when I jam the most and just nothing of value in this day of tech.

Z3 Compact. Out of nowhere usb stopped working for transferring or charging, sometimes it drops calls or wifi is wonky. Everything else is perfect, never a problem with the back glass or anything else for that matter. Battery is still good.

There's no good phone in sight, much less on the size of the Z3 compact so I got a OnePlus 2 new with a back plate for peanuts, even less than what I had to pay for a Z5 compact. Why did you pick this over the pixel devices if you aren't using the moto features? IMO those are one of the greatest selling points of the phone.

Also, the phone does have a white LED but it doesn't get used for some reason.
I believe you can use some LED enabler apps from the play store to get it to activate. Some custom roms also have it enabled by default.

I bought a Moto Z Play yesterday. It seems neat. Moto Display and Moto Actions are more useful than I expected. Also I'm still on my first charge. This is the first Android phone I've owned that comes with a mostly-stock Android interface, so I don't plan on installing a custom ROM yet. It still forces some things on you though, for example, you can't install the Google Camera app from the store (but you can sideload the .apk and it works perfectly.)

The back doesn't look like pic related because it comes with a Style Shell in the box, and you should probably use it, since it protects the mod connector, the glass back and the huge camera bump.

I have a 1020 too, and i'm actually a bit glad that microsoft stopped development of 10, since when i upgraded it (both normally and by spoofing the model) i had terrible...er battery life and you could even cook an egg on the thing while browsing on mobile networks.

OPO owner here, running CM13.1.2 (last factory OS), still running fast and smoother than most other devices. Can run a custom CM13 or even CM14.1 now and get similar performance, fast and smooth without issues.

Great battery life, which was my main requirement when buying it a year ago. Also the Snapdragon 615 and 2GB RAM are fine for my needs.

However stock Android is shit and I fucking hate on screen buttons, especially back on the left. Also 5.5" is a bit too big for a handlet like myself, so my next phone has to be smaller for easy one hand use.

I'd say hold on to it for at least 3 years (my personal rule is $100 per year for all my phones) and then upgrade.

For your next phone, keep in mind that you want something that can be bootloader unlocked and rooted, and will also have lots of third party developer support. Roms will really help to extent the life of a device far after when it stops receiving official updates.
