M.2 is an evolution of the mSATA standard, which came into its own after they decided to supplement the SATA standard with the then newborn SATA Express protocol. It was there that they decided to use 2 lanes of PCIe 3.0 to make it SATA Express compliant (which is why all Z97 boards share their M.2 port with the SATA Express port) and someone had the bright idea to double the lanes for more throughput and switch to the NVMe standard over AHCI. M.2 will always have SATA capability.
