I want to get a 1440p, 144hz monitor for future-proofing, fun and profit.

However I'm probably going to upgrade to an RX 480 because cheap, meaning I'll probably have to choose between 1440p ~60hz, or 1080p (or less) and 144hz for most games.

Does 1080p look bad on a 1440p display? Specifically, does it look worse than if I were to just go with a 1080p monitor at the same screen size? If not, I'll spring for the 1440p. But I'm concerned I'll be shooting myself in the foot if the majority of the time I'm running at 1080p anyway.

What size monitor?
>>
>>57684287
Probably 24" or thereabouts

27" is a bit too neckbeard for me. Concerned the gurls I bring home would get scared and run off before I can chloroform + tie them up
>>
>>57684261

It's a waste of money right now.

Like if you want one and the price isn't a issue get it, but prices will tank as it becomes more popular.
>>
>>57684261
Get a 27 1440p. It's the best screen size and you will be using 1440p for along time. Not like meme 4k that literally no games will run good at for a decent price for a few more years.
>>
>>57684303
25" 1440p IPS exists, but 144hz is only really available at 27"
>>
>>57684356
>>57684365
>>57684392
If that's the case then maybe I will just stick to 1080p for now. I should've mentioned that I'd prefer it to be around or <$200 or so, and some googling reveals there is definitely absolutely nothing around that price with all those specs and 27". My mom's buying it for Christmas but I'd rather not sperg out and ask for a $500 setup :____)
>>
27in
144hz
1440p
FreeSync
IPS

If you can get that around $300, then its good.
>>
>>57684450

If you want more 'space' just get two monitors. It still works out cheaper than a 1440p
>>
>>57684450
I would definitely get a better graphics card and max games out at 27in 1080 60hz for awhile then upgrade the screen when 4K isn't a meme if you want to go that route too.

here's a (you) for that delicious b8
>>
>>57684287

On a 24" i'd probably go 1080 144.
>>
>>57684303
>tie them up
implying they dont like this
>>
>>57684261
Dude there is no such thing as future proofing. Just get what is best performance in your price range. There will always be deals in the future. 1080p 144hz freesync is $200. its perfect.
When you upgrade to a card that can do it then find the deal.
>>
>>57685577
this, esp if you mean gaming future proofing. people who "future proofed" a year ago are now cucked because no good games are out so what was the point.

A 1080p monitor is cheap enough to throw out, and if you get 4k monitors the same size, they can integrate well with a 4k setup later.

A 4k monitor now might typically only go up to 60hz and make a few comprimises, but they will always be nice later on as a second monitor.

A 2560x1440 monitor is forever gonna be the redheaded stepchild of your monitors no matter how good it seems relative to other monitors now.
>>
>>57685637
thats why I am waiting

I agree 1440p is perfect right now, but we are in a moment of change here, in a few years it'll be pretty much all 4k and 1080ps, just like when there was 1080p and tons of 720p
>>
>>57685677
To be fair there is also 5k monitors out there that would integrate better with 1440p... but nobody makes content for 5k or 1440p.

1080, 4k, and 8k are what people are actually going to make content for.

>t. 1920x1080~60hz user
2560x1440~144hz is the current top tier monitor you should even consider for anything unless you're an artist who would actually benefit from bigger resolution.
2560x1440 is the best gaming resolution, works perfectly well with 1280x720 content much like 4k does with 1920x1080, gives you room for improvement in GPU performance when you decide to upgrade that and gives you a bloody nice response rate/fps for older games that aren't optimised like shit.
>>
>>57685712
So you're gonna buy a 2560x1440 display to view content in lower resolution than you would if you bought a 1080p display.

You're retarded.

>2560x1440~144hz is the current top tier monitor you should even consider for anything unless you're an artist who would actually benefit from bigger resolution.

But I use remote desktop all the goddamned time on a massive amount of computers with 1080p resolution and 4k is like sex whereas 2560x1440 is in this zone of suck.

Also I mostly play Civ VI (play it 75% of time) which a 1070 can max now at 4k 60hz. Then a few years from now when hopefully we have oled 4k 144hz monitors I'm going to be able to start using that as my main display and beef up my GPU and CPU to hit the higher framerate and get HDCP. Then I can max the game I actually play and have a setup that can play most games at 4k at reasonable settings a few years from now and I can watch 4k content on.

The only bad decision I could make is locking myself into a 2560x1440. Then rather than being able to hit 4k 60fps with one upgrade, I need two, an i7-5960X I need to overclock into fucking orbit to hit 100fps, and a 1080, and I still don't max the shit out. If I simply forgo the CPU upgrade, I just end up with WORSE quality than if I went straight for 4k as the CPU holds me to 60fps.

Then, I still need another CPU and GPU upgrade to max out the game fully, which rather than a reasonable goal halfway through civs lifespan, is gonna cost be an utterly insane amount of money, thus I have the same problem people have with 4k screens now, but with 5k screens later, with me not being able to max the game until the new version is about to come out and threatens to obsolete anything I buy. I But don't worry, I'll be able to watch 720p content, it will work perfectly with it, while people are watching 4k streams.

Man why haven't I bought 1440p already? Gosh it's the natural choice if you aren't an artist. So future proof!

>>
games on max don't even go above 100fps on 1080p using a 980ti what's the point of 144hz
>>
>>57684261
1440p here.

I sometimes have to run recent games on 720p due to my graphics card and seeing the image blown up does make me wish I'd gotten a normal 1080p monitor.

However the extra sharpness of images and text, along with the extra real estate is unbeatable. I can't go back to smaller resolution sceens now.

If you really want to be future proof I would just get a 4K.

If not, a 1080p.

I think it best to own two 1080p monitors and one 4k hdr tv
