What do? I hear that the 480 isn't that far off from the 1060 in performance, and freesync I supposed to be pretty good

The cpu is good enough to get you by for 2 more months, but get a solid state, and migrate the os to it. this will make your computer feel brand new.

Once zen comes out, make your call on the rest of the computer than.

The popping caps on 1080s were a different issue.

EVGA cards have high VRM temps because there's literally nothing conducting their heat to the heatsink. That's why they sent people thermal pads and made a vbios with a more aggressive fan curve (no 0db mode anymore.)

So here's the gist of it: The cards have pretty inadequate cooling for the VRM due to reasons (They essentially are attached to a flat, metal frontplate that receives airflow from the stock fans, and since both the VRAM and the VRM are attached to the frontplate they share heat) and as a result they come marginally within the spec limit for the card. Meaning the VRM wears down faster, but still well within the expected timeframe from the cards (typically they're rated for 50-70,000 hours continuous load at the temps the card would peak at.)

The 1070/1080s exploding and catching fire, all that other shit, is an unrelated cause. Because more often than not they're unrelated capacitors just blowing up on the cards. Keep in mind, besides the non-reference PCBs, these are the same PCB designs as every other company so you would expect similar fail rates on different cards.

It's a serious concern, because it does run too hot for what it should be, but it shouldn't make you as the card owner scared unless you're doing heavy overclocking. In which case, either move to full block water cooling or apply the thermal mods like they say you should.
