The whole meme about Macs being better for audio and video editing comes from false interpretation of statistics: namely, most people who professionally work with DAWs and editing software aren't computer savvy. They don't know how to assemble or even pick the components they need.

With Macs, not only they get a pre-built PC, but an OS that is, well, idiot-proof, also starting the "it just werks" meme.

So it's not that Macs are better for editing, it's only that the people who do it profesioinally and are part of "the industry" don't know any better than buying Macs.

I believe it started in about 99' after the iMac DV was released. One of the big drawcards of it was the ability to plug a camcorder straight into it through IEEE 1394 and then edit in iMovie on Mac OS 9 with relative ease. The corresponding pro model, the Power Mac G4 Sawtooth also had such ports built in to facilitate video editing, with Final Cut Pro first being released around this time.
