trying to move jobs from my shitty half dev / half application support job to a full dev job
but all the postings are for java devs. I've only worked with python for the past 3 years, but if you tell me to write a java program i'll be able to do it.
in your experience as a senior/recruiter/hrgoblin do you instantly turn down candidates for junior positions if they have experience but not specifically relevant experience?

If you can do the job without fucking my dog or setting building on fire... you're hired.

I would try an internship. I personally wouldn't hire someone for Java who doesn't have experience in it. If it's some obscure language, sure, I can see why someone would think "He'll figure it out" but for something like Java there is no reason to hire you over someone who's been a Java developer for 10 years, except maybe if you offer to work for free until you get a good grasp on the langauge, which I wouldn't recommend.

can't really afford to do an internship or "work-free-to-prove" kind of deal, I'm the breadwinner for my family so if I can't bring in money i'm shit outta luck

Try finding a php or perl job, honestly the transition from Python won't be that much of a jump, and I know for a fact my company would hire if you knew any of the three or Java

i've tried php and perl before, neither are what I would want to use for a living
