I can't describe how much I disagree with this point. A programming language is a tool to make software, it is not the software. You can always edit the software for personal use if you want to. That is a freedom you have. Just like you don't need the original Gimp project file to edit a picture. Or the original OpenShot project file to edit the video.
But we need software to be open source to actually be able to tell what it is doing. It is about being able to at least somewhat trust the software you run on your machine, where most people have a significant amount of personal data stored.
