Nonsense. Xubuntu has never looked that good. Source?

Doesn't matter though since Xfce is useless for touchscreens.

For once, OP is not a faggot.

Best distro, because it is easy to setup, looks and works good with default settings, has Debian as its core but has none of that freetard shit like refusing to ship with proprietary drivers and it doesn't take a full time job to maintain and fix like Arch.

>>57632055
No. LXDE is worse than XFCE in almost every possible way, except base memory usage. Even that is negligible, unless you have a really old pc with like 256 MB RAM but at that point you are better off with only a WM like WindowMaker. Also, LXDE is a dead project now, LXQT is far from ready.
>>
>>57632586
>with only a WM like WindowMaker
you don't know what DE and WM mean
>>
>>57633417
I do. DE = WM + other programs. E.g. LXDE = Openbox + Lxpanel + lxterm + other shit. But correct me if I'm wrong.
>>
>>57633505
right so if you use a bare WM wouldn't you also use a panel + file browser + widgets + internet browser? Therefore making a DE?
>>
>>57632586
Arch is easy to maintain. The first installation is time consuming but that's it.
>>
>>57631666
Ok, Satan, did they ever fix the ever present screen tearing issue? Don't give me that Compton shit either because that doesn't work. Other than that, I love Xubuntu/xfce. Great feature-rich distro/DE.
>>
>>57631666
I use xubuntu.
Comfy as fuck that little distro.

I like centOS too with xfce.

>>
>>57633523

I used DE in a sense that it is a preconfigured set of packages like LXDE, XFCE, Gnome, etc.

With contrast to this, I was suggesting that one with low system resources should install Window Maker and a set of packages they need to (e.g. browser, file manager, terminal emulator, etc) to make a more barebone but less resource consuming setup than even LXDE, the lightest preconfigured desktop environment.

I was talking about Window Maker, not all other WMs. Notice how Window Maker doesn't require a separate dock.

there's no need for that, if your system was made post-1995 it should run LXDE just fine

>has Debian as its core but has none of that freetard shit like refusing to ship with proprietary drivers
FUD

Debian has iso images with binary only drivers included

And when you install from an image without binary drivers the Debian installers detects if you have hardware that needs non-free firmware and prompts you with a link to download. You write on a usb flash drive, plug it in and you're good to go

That's how I installed Debian on my laptop

Compiz > Compton
Unity > *

Best font rendering and video playback with no screen tearing. Vanilla Ubuntu is the best Linux experience.

Xubuntu is the single best "just works" distro out there and is always the one I recommend for anyone wanting to try out Linux.

Solemn agree.
I just hope shit isn't wrecked when Unity 8 and Mir hit.
>>
>>57635022
Unity is dog shit. V-sync in Xfce eliminates 90% of screen tearing and I can live with the remainder in exchange for a DE designed for a desktop/laptop instead of a damned tablet.
>>
>>57635072
Compton is a massive fuckup on xfce which leaves black borders and invisible boxes around tooltips and menus. You need to rely on configs from other people to make it work and still it feels like shit when you play YouTube videos in browser.

Compiz takes care of everything OOB with GUI manager provides far more customization especially for full screen games where you need OpenGL and other tweaks.
>>
>>57635072
Well I think Unity on a desktop is comfy af so up yours bitch

you must have shadows disabled
>>
>>57635282
Yes, I do, but I never saw any black borders or invisible boxes when I had them enabled.
>>
>>57635335
that's weird because it's a widely reported issue that Compton fucks up shadows for certain menus like the panel popups and Synaptic. It used to do for Software but I think that was patched
>>
>>57635282
Do you mean those shadows after it fades away? I think it's really not a big deal since they also disappear pretty quickly, if that's what you mean
