Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Gonna take my time and wait until January to get the CPU/GPU as the prices will hopefully drop drastically. Really excited, as my current PC is ancient 2010 tech.

How well will this run GTA V?

Sorry, your build is too underpowered to run GTAV even at 480p.

I have an i7-3770 with a Raedon HD 7870 2GB and I'm looking to upgrade the GPU.
Which one should I take that isn't too expansive (was thinking about the RX 480 since I'm not playing that many recent games) and should I think about upgrading the CPU as well?
>>
Hello /g/ i'm looking to build my very first gaming PC for under $1200. I'd assume an i5 and a 1060 will be sufficient for 1080p 60fps?

As this is my 1st time would you please kindly take a look at my build and please give suggestions?

>>

thanks anon

i'm gonna keep the original 144hz monitor i had though
>>
>>57608864
144hz is a fucking meme
>>
>>57608871
144hz is only a meme if you don't play first person shooters or you're poor.
>>
>>57608892
This.
>>
>>57608871
even if it is a meme

the original one i had is cheaper than the one you gave me and it still has a higher refresh rate

i don't give a fuck about the three inches i'm losing in real estate

also i mainly play cs:go so the 144hz actually matters :^)
>>
Can anyone recomend a good computer monitor that would be easier on my eyes? My current one sucks and gives me headaches. Im not a gamer but would like it to be decently big.
>>
>>57608892
I have thousands of hours in CS yet it don't feel like I need a 144hz monitor, or a $150 mouse/keyboard.

>>57608901
2560x1440 vs 1920x1080 is much more important
>>
>>57608909
>playing games in 1440p
meme
either play in 1080p or 4k imo fuck 1440p
>>
>>57608892

high refresh rate monitors are actually really nice to use on desktops considering you don't get nearly as much jitter on scrolling and moving windows

it's like going from a monitor that ghosts to one that doesn't, it doesn't seem like a huge change on paper but makes a huge impact in how nice it it feels to use
>>
>>57608909
I'd rather have a 24" 1080p monitor at 144hz than a 27" 1440p monitor at 60hz
>>
>>57608909
>playing cs:go at 60 Hz

this desu
>>
>>57608909
>2560x1440 vs 1920x1080 is much more important
No, anon, it is not. In fact, many people will take 800x600 with a higher refresh rate over 4k resolution, which is pretty much pointless unless you're playing your games on giant screen.
>>
My future build that I'll build in the next 6 or so months

CPU: Maybe Zen if the hype lives up, or i5 6600k, i7 6700k
Storage: 512GB Samsung 960 Evo
Graphics: Either GTX 1070 or GTX 1080
PSU: some 600W~ modular PSU, corsair or seasonic maybe
Cooling: Some Noctua air cooler
RAM: 16GB or 32GB DDR4 (2666+ MHz)
Screen: Probably 24" 1080p 144hz
>>

How is this one?
>>
>>57609052
Should be good. I'd save a few bucks on a cheaper cooler or just use the stock cooler at first and see how it does and use that money to get a 1060 3GB instead of a 1050ti. Well worth the ~60 bucks or whatever.

That power supply is way fucking overkill for what you're putting in there too.
>>
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/L2GcRG

r8 pls, just need it for games at decent to mediocre fps. Don't play to much modern shit atm outside maybe doom.
>>
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/products/video-card/#c=369&r=8192&sort=a8&page=1

Which one should I get?
>>
>>57609071
That would be nice.

>>57609079
I own that same exact monitor and I really like it but if I were getting a GPU as high end as a 1070 I'd get a 1440p monitor. 1070 and above is kind of wasted on a 1080p monitor even if its 144 Hz. Most games these days can be downsampled from native resolution to a lower one to improve FPS or you could turn down a few settings.
>>
>>57609113
Fine for general gaming. Price on that 850 Evo seems a little high for what you're getting.
>>
>>57609136

>>
>>57609064
try speaking like not a retard and we might know what you are asking
>>
>>57608041
This. My current setup is ancient but still holds up to what i normally play but most modern games wont hit over 25fps on lowest settings.
>>
>>57609136
Hard to say. 1070s have been riddled with controversy. Recently reliable brands like MSI and EVGA 1070s have both had VRM issues.

Go with whatever one has a good warranty and seems to have good recent reviews. They're basically all made by the same conglomerate of Taiwanese crooks anyway.

I built this PC in 2010, all I did was add 4 gigs of ram and replace the gpu when the old one died in 2013.

Surprised how well GTA V runs still, on normal anyway.

Upgrading next month as I'll be getting huge pay for working the holidays this year.

Disgusting spoonfeeding. Also, EVGA has not always been shit. They've been one of the more highly regarded brands for the past 5 years easily.

>>57609226
Alright man, that's cool.

>>57609217
Nice. That PSU would be totally fine. I like Seasonic so I'd probably spring for their 520W Bronze but that Corsair one will probably be ok. If you find that the stock cooler is too loud then you can always get aftermarket at that point, I just don't think you'll even need it.

>This means that EVGA, Gainward, Palit, MSI, Gigabyte and Asus have fixed their Micron Memory issues for GTX 1070 buyers. So far, it looks like PNY, KFA2, Zotac and Inno3D still need to release updates

1. in your link theres like 8 manufactures named, why single out MSI
2. evga was always shit on the hardware side, they made up for it with customer service, but if you saw any regular card of theirs, its always lowest numbers of phases possible, worst passive cooling, fans...
>>
>>57609331
Maybe a lower binned GPU that doesn't overclock well but should be fine at stock speeds. Might be loud due to only having the single fan.

>>57609346
All I said was "recently reliable" brands like MSI and EVGA. I wouldn't consider the rest of those brands recently reliable, at least not on the same tier as MSI and EVGA. Fucking calm down. Obviously its a far reaching issue with 1070s in general, that's why I said check recent reviews and return policy/warranty.

start with this

You can swap out the h110 with a z170 if you want to upgrade the CPU later

Add a 1050ti and you can play all the games you listed at 50+ fps
>>
>>57610009
He's serious about the pentium. The shit tier games you are playing would benefit more from a really strong dual core than an old-ass 2500k/mobo that has probably been to hell and back at this point.

>>57609848
Could add a 250GB SSD for your games and save the 120GB boot/other programs

Nah that's fine, especially if you want to OC The CPU and the GPU.

>>57610433
I think it depends on the games you want to play right now and of course whether you're talking about the 3 GB 1060 or the full 1060. It also depends on how long you plan on owning it.

Over the next few years, if past history is any indication, the AMD card will show gains through software improvement while the Nvidia card only improves a minimal amount or just plateaus.

luddite here. how much of a performance gain will I see upgrading from an old 2gb HD6950? Huge gains, or marginal? It's like 6 years old so benchmarks don't bother comparing to it.

I can play a small portion of the modern shit games like dark souls 3 as-is, they're playable. Fallout 4 wasn't as playable. but from the research I've done, I can't even maintain 60fps within this budget and I'll need a 1070. Is that true?

If you're just gaming there's literally no point. There's no noticeable difference in terms of vidya. Save that $140 to go towards a monitor.

>>
>>57610705
I think it's worth the gamble if you plan on owning it for a long time. In some limited situations, DX12 implementation has breathed new life into previously left for dead CPUs like the FX series since they are highly threaded.

>>57610804
Not by much if at all. In fact, the Black Friday sales are usually legit. To put it in perspective, unlocked i5's (K series) have almost always been around $240 USD. This goes back all the way to the 2500k and they generally hold their value until their stock is out which coincides with the new generation coming out.

>>57610825
The "hyper-threading doesn't help for gaming" meme will most certainly die in the near future, it's just a question of when.
>>
>>57610922
So is it a better idea to grab stuff on Black Friday or Cyber Monday then?
>>
>>57610705

If you like to overclock, then no.

If you don't do it so much, then go for it if you don't think $140 is much.

But in my honest opinion, I'd go with the I5, and invest in Krabby Patties in the near future anyway.

Building a computer for my older brother's law firm reception desk. Use case is word processing, e-mails, calendar management, light spreadsheeting. Budget is $600 for the box.

On the right is my build. On the left is a prebuilt available from a retailer for $498, but I will get a ~10% discount on it so let's say $450.

Which one would you choose and why? I'm just not sure how the J3710 stacks up against the i3 but I like how the i3 has an upgrade path to something better because it uses the 1151 and the J3710 doesn't. Also, the build has an SSD.
>>
>>57612171
If you're doing video recording, you should have an i7. That gpu is garbage tier, get a 1060 or a 1070. I don't think you know what an ssd does. It's a hard drive, but it runs much, much faster than a traditional hard drive does. You put software that you use a lot, like your os, on it and it boots several times quicker and runs better. It's almost a necessity in [current year].
>>57612233

It's not my first build, I just can't find any good info comparing the two processors. I know that my build is better in terms of memory, storage, mobo, etc. etc., I just want input on the CPUs and I can't find anything in depth on the net because the internet is full of high-end consumer gaming bullshit and not practical knowledge for business purposes, to my chagrin.

Basically the J3710 has 4 cores whereas the i3 has 2 hypethreaded cores and a much higher clock speed, so I'm feeling the i3 (it's also heaps cheaper because it's on sale), but I just can't find any real benchmarking for the J3710.

I want to get them the best value computer I can and I'm on uni break so having to build it will give me something to do so I don't mind if it's a pain.

1060. AMD driver support is really hit or miss, granted it's been getting better. 1060 outperforms the 480 by 15% on average on DX11 and lower, and they're within 1% of each other on DX12. >>57612597
>ages better

>>57612686
Yeah. It's going to be the new API of choice for developers. Literally no reason to use DX11 over it afaik. Still, for older games that don't use DX12, the choice is basically this:

1060:

Pros -

15% faster
Much better driver support
User control panel is better than AMD's, from what I hear
GameWorks works a hell of a lot better

Cons -

6GB VRAM vs 8GB VRAM. The 1060's RAM is clocked higher than the 480's, so it's a bit less black and white than 6 vs 8, but nonetheless, AMD has more
AMD optimized games don't tend to run too well

480:
Pros -

2GB more VRAM
AMD optimized games run better
Vulkan API makes AMD run like a dream, but it's not exactly popular. I don't see it taking off

Cons -
15% slower on non-DX12/Vulkan games
Takes more electricity
Generates more heat
Drivers are worse
Nvidia GameWorks games don't run too well, but you can usually offset that quite a bit using the Crimson Software to manually set tessellation low
>>
>>57612705

WD. Best hands down.
>>
>>57612631
>1060 outperforms the 480 by 15% on average on DX11 and lower
Who cares? In DX 11 either of those cards can easily get Ultra 60FPS (vast majority of DX11 games) or High 60FPS (a few recent releases).

Personally I just played Dishonored and Wolfenstein:TNO on Ultra 60FPS locked flawlessly. Mad Max I played with 1440p VSR and got 60FPS locked on the Ultra Preset.

Where performance really matters is in upcoming titles, where the 4GB 480 often outperforms the 6GB 1060 while being significantly cheaper.

Cheapest 700W on the net.

You can get a 500W one but the 700W is actually cheaper according to the website for some dumb reason, no doubt.

Also, you can get by just fine with a i5 3570 (what I've currently got in my rig) unless you're playing CPU intensive games like Paradox or Civ games, so don't feel the need to spend fortunes on your CPU.
>>
>>57613014
Fucking solid for the most part. Literally the only thing that I'd change is the RAM. Get some 1866mhz RAM and you're golden. The FX-83xx uses 1866mhz as it's base, so if you're not using that, it's not performing as well as it should. Not a big issue until you decide to overclock though. If you OC, you're going to be creating a bottleneck that worsens your performance. I don't understand the logic behind it, but I've seen it happen
>>

Need help, is buying this RAM now a good futureproof for ZEN next year?

The reason is since trump won, the computer hardware prices already increase nearly 10% in my country and it still going to increase because forex is fucked up.

If the forex forecast is true, i probably save $20 if i don't bought it next year.

The Mobo and RAM atm are not really decided, just placeholders since i can't seem to decide properly, and the PSU is a maybe since i already have a chink 600W PSU I got in a repair a few years ago. Would anybody be able to help at all? Live in AUS, Budget is around 1500-1600.

No worries, just make sure you actually check and understand the size of a full-sized case. They're fucking huge. That's good because assembly is easy and fun and never have to worry about case space, but if you've got a small desk or weak arms or have to move it often, maybe not.

Fractal Design Define R5 fag here from two days ago.

Here's the finished build, which looks really good. The Define R5 is definitely an upgrade from the R4. It was incredibly easy to manage the cables even with my bulky non-modular power supply. The hard drive cages also doesn't vibrate as much as the R4. I really like the completely modular HDD and ODD cages, giving the user many choices and I hope to God that they don't remove the fan controller in future versions.

I'm thinking about buying some ricer LED strips since I bought the windowed version. Hmmm.....

And fuck any manufacturer whose fans have proprietary mounting holes and dimensions (Looking at you, Be Quiet. Sure, their fans are quieter than Noctua but still).

It doesn't end up being much heavier at all, honestly. You should be okay if you lift. Even if you have a small table I'd highly suggest accommodation a full sized case. As someone said, if you ever wanna shove something in there it's not a hassle and, cable management is easier, so is cleaning which isn't required as frequently as a mid sized case.
