Even if you have the thumbnails / previews / large icons / whatever you call it, it still takes time to find images if you dump everything in the same directory.
You should do both.
If it takes too long to rename files, you use directories.
I use KDE so I can use both, their file picker is so much better, even Qt seems like dogshit when you have used both.

My problem with the GTK file dialog is not that GTK is bad programmers, (probably why they target C programmers).
The problem is that the file dialog is constructed in a bad way.
I don't think the file dialog should be a part of the toolkit at all.
The good design would be to have it be a separate project. You basically call an application with a pointer to the path and to the filename, maybe adding more features, such as default filter or whatever features are available.

This way, each toolkit could provide this, and the user could replace it with whatever they want, making the file dialog identical across all applications, sharing the same config, same links, same features.
I know this adds overhead, but it would make it easier to fix applications without rewriting all of them.
