I've only been on reddit a handful of times and have spent something like 10 years on 4chan. I have no doubts that any other website on the Internet knows more about technology than /g/. This place is full of fucking retards, not even skiddies waste their time here.

the thing about reddit is that there's almost invariably a good conversation about something on the archives. if i want to see a list of good board games to look at buying, i can check /tg/ but it's more likely there's a subreddit with a few good threads.

the same is true for tech. whenever i have a question about my hackintosh build, it's possible tonyxmac86 or whatever has info, but it's almost as likely that some reddit thread will have hashed out the issue.

Sadly, reddit. Though, to find better quality discussions, just like >>57596960 said, you're gonna have to stray from the defaults. Otherwise you're gonna get inane shit like "VLC is free and it doesn't have ads? WOW, they're, like, bros!". The discussion in the tech related subreddits caters to the layman more than it does to the experienced people, and is generally of lower quality. Youl'll often find an "I..know some of those words"comment upvoted to the top.

But the smaller, tech-related subreddits? The people there can be even bigger pedants than /g/, and this is kinda hard to top. People on SE can know their shit, too.

Judging reddit by its' defaults is like judging 4chan by /b/ and /pol/. Branch out.

If you come across an intelligent reddit response simply copy and paste it into a search engine and you'll see reddit is all about plagiarism. People on reddit literally keep wordpad document responses for X and Y, or they just look back through theirs or somebody else's post history from their profile to copy and paste a prior response.

To put it simply, Reddit is book smart. /g/ is street smart.

Reddit is an amazing content aggregator. I've found myself using reddit as a term to parse results on Google more than doing traditional Googling of jumping from website to website.

I'd say /g/ is smarter than the average redditor but lots of specialists frequent reddit and that what makes it special.

Speaking for the "technology" areas of both sites (if we treat generals here like subs), they cater to different topics.

/g/ is mostly consumer electronics which invariably means anything gaming related or smartphones (even though they have their own containment general, or sub). The other half of /g/ is centered around programming, within which distro wars, editor wars, you name it, occur. It seems like a good portion of people on /g/ are actually working in the field. Oh and obviously privacy-related matters are of /g/’s concern too.

On reddit you have r/gadgets for the consumer threads, which is why implore people posting here to go there instead, and r/programming and all it's specific subs for programming. This means r/technology has more threads on interesting topics like automation which might get pushed to the side on /g/.

I don't really frequent reddit but I know for sure that it's pretty bad for posting stuff yourself. So /g/ is at least better when it comes to posting. Reading I don't know but /g/ is a lot of unfiltered shit while reddit has everything filtered by the community so I guess it depends. If you want to read the objectively accepted opinion or if you want to read a lot of different opinions with a lot of shitposting.

/g/ has /dpt/ and I guess /wdg/ and even those are pretty bad unless you filter out quite literally EVERY tripfag. 4chan has this newfag infection of "le shitposting is the norm" on top of all of the people who spend entire threads flipping out if object-oriented is mentioned or someone doesn't want to read about some fag copying examples with a functional language for the umpteenth time. It's pretty nice and you can get some good answers for your language of choice issues if the neo-4chan/assburger/painfully depressed NEET crowd isn't active that day. Reddit has plenty of smaller boards/forms that have actual answers for questions. There are plenty of shitty posters and boards but most of the time there's someone who can and will answer your question or someone that wrote a cool megapost about a subject you're currently working with. Their voting system is fucking stupid, though. On 4chan, truly shitty threads will mostly fall off the board. I like some of Reddit, but I hate the fact that they have a voting system. Usernames are fine because if you want to shitpost you can just use an alt account, but fuck their upboat bullshit. Wish there was a a site with reddit's structure but without voting systems.
