Was reading up on the new PS4 Pro meme and I saw it requires an 'HDR' TV to get the HDR effect. Am I missing something here? Can't any TV have HDR content on it? It's just a rendering effect is it not? Games on PCs have HDR in them, is my computer monitor suddenly 'HDR'? I'm so confused.

>can't any tv?
No, HDR is the use of "extra bits" to display more color combinations
currenly we're limited to just 8-bits which for all intents and purposes translates to 16581375 different colors not including contrasts and hues. HDR TV's are able to use 10-bit color interfaces that allows you to use a metric fuck ton more. The real question is whether or not you will notice these extra variations of color and will developers even use it?

Ah, thank you very much for the clarification.

I personally think its a marketting buzzword Sony will try to take advantage of to sell more PS4's and HDR TV's especially their overpriced HDR TV's which don't really offer anything over normal TV's because not even cable broadcasting is gonna adopt it

The new "HDR" displays are 10-bit and 12-bit panels that have to meet certain contrast ratio specifications to be certified for Dolby Vision and HDR10. Dolby Vision is objectively superior but it costs more and has proprietary hardware involved.
I want an HDR OLED tv but price is still too high and there's simply not enough compelling content available. Also still have concerns regarding the life of an OLED display.

There's plenty of 10 butt displays and there has been for years

tl;dr
"""HDR""" bloom as popularized by Source engine and friends is an entirely different concept than HDR color range. Gaben was a fucking retard slapping names on things he knows nothing about.

Each of the subpixels (Red, green, blue thirds of the pixels) on your TV can be on a brightness setting between 0 and 255. HDR has far more, so you can have much finer differences.
