Users of what.cd were the ones to regularly buy merch, concert tickets, bandcamp albums for indie bands, and pay for subscriptions to music services. People who love music.

Bands even shared their stuff purposefully on what.cd to build hype and spread the word on their music.

They just killed the single best library of rare music on earth. There is no other website that had the catalog of rare albums in multiple formats.

There's a nippon jazz and swing band that I was able to finally listen to because of what.cd, and then I went and bought merch and albums internationally because I loved them so much. That wouldn't have happened without that library.

Was any of the "lost" music on there actual good music, or was it all incomprehensible noise and royalty free ukulele with some cuck singing over it like what half of SoundCloud is like? I'm not a music enthusiast, so my opinion probably won't mean shit, but I have been on SoundCloud for some time and I've been to several underground concerts in my area, and I'd say 90% of the music there is really forgettable because most of these bands just emulate existing sounds instead of making any innovations. So when people are making a big deal over how supposedly great What.cd's selection was, I can't help but think that if you really like that kind of thing, you can probably just pick up FL Studio or an actual instrument, record some tracks with it that try to copy what kind of music you usually got from What.cd, and it'll be indistinguishable from all these lost albums.

I'd like to create a tool to help migrate What.CD's index and swarms to a new tracker. Losing all those vinyl rips and recordings would be a real shame.

My thought:
- Host a list of all what.cd torrents from archived metadata.
- If you were seeding any of the torrents, you can run a script to connect to the new tracker, or enable DHT + PEX.
- In the new tracker case, the site simply marks each torrent "migrated" when it gains at least one seeder.
- If the pure DHT + PEX model, the site polls every torrent, looking for seeders with DHT enabled, and marks the torrent "migrated" when it finds one.

Then at least we'll know what we lost.

Anybody have any ideas of what the next what.cd will be called?

If what.cd had the intelligence to look at the bigger picture, they'd have a rule to release torrent uploads into the public space a set time after an upload. That way two things would happen:
1. There would be backups of rarities in case shit ever got fucked (nothing in this world lasts for eternity).
2. The high standard and quality obsession of the site's culture, the only positive thing about the site, would have a ripple effect and get projected onto the wider public scene, thus elevating it.
Or at the very least they'd have mirrors.

Instead, what you got is a huge epic fail in the truest meaning of the words.
Because of what? Secret club complex? Vanity?
Can't say i feel sorry for the whole collective.
On the contrary, let this be a lesson to them since they let their egos get the best of them.
