Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

I used to think stallman was a weirdo, but I've thought about it for a bit, and realized that he was not only alive before the "digital age" as the wide public is aware of it, but also involved in its creation.
Therefore, all those things we take for granted, like the word "piracy" and DMCA are new to him. They cropped up long after he was involved with digital technology.

When you look at it from that side, you see how ridiculous a concept like "piracy" or "copyright" is. And suddenly, he's no longer the weirdo, I am.

A E B D C
>2. Which of these formats are lossless? If you can't find any, tell me one.
D
>3. Which of these formats are ARE allowed on What.CD? List the letters only.
A C

>1. Do you know the lowest allowed CBR bitrate on What.CD?
MP3 320kbps
>2. Tell me everything you know about VBR and CBR. Why would you choose one over the other?
VBR: Variable bitrate, which is more efficient (less bits wasted on silence, more bits spent on intense regions).
CBR: Constant bitrate, only useful if you have an exact bandwidth constraint for streaming purposes and want minimal latency or predictable storage sizes; or if you're using a braindead 30 year old format like MP3 where the CBR mode is actually higher quality than the VBR modes
>3. What is LAME, and what does it output?
LAME is the industry standard MP3 encoder
>4. When we are talking about lossy, what does that mean? Tell me everything you know on the subject.
It means improving compression at the cost of adding distortion/noise. Lossy codecs don't roundtrip back into PCM
>5. Which of these formats are LAME outputs, and why not the others?
B, C and D for sure. It can probably also decode MP3 back into PCM so A as well. E because it isn't a fucking flac encoder, what a stupid question
>6. What makes a music file "lossless"? Name two examples.
Really, what it means is that it's bit-identical (PCM) to the original distribution source (i.e. CD), or the original recording source in the case of vinyl. So if you re-encode an MP3 file in FLAC, it's not “lossless” because it differs from the original CD.
>7. Which of the following formats are allowed on What.CD?
A D

>YOU HAVE FAILED THE INTERVIEW!
yeah no. easiest fucking interview. If you fail this you are a braindead retard and don't deserve to use the internet let alone download music
>>
>>57566627
>Lossy codecs don't roundtrip back into PCM
Minor clarification: Lossy codecs don't universally roundtrip back into PCM. You're basically reducing the space of music files which you can represent without loss.

Indeed.
The problem i don't want to download FLAC. I want all the high quality VBRo shit from what. I can settle for decent mp3 320 shit i guess. Or encode it my fucking self.
That being said. A FLAC isn't necessarily just a FLAC, you don't know the source. A lossless rip of a 192kpbs limewire song is theoretically possible to make as a .flac and it will sound just as shitty.

Yeah but the difference is now they're going after the consumers as well.

Piracy never died because the only ones who could get (realistically) fined or arrested were the ones mass distributing it. Now that is no longer the case and they are really closing in on the major piracy websites. I predict TPB won't last past 2017 as well, some people even say it's been already taken over and is now but a honeypot.

The days of piracy will be over soon unfortunately.

Yeah except since 2007 the government has become much stronger when it comes to internet censorship.

One day WCD is up and running, the other is forced to hit the eject button and instadelete their entire database, millions of torrents, many extremely rare pieces, that users contributed over the course of nearly 10 years. Gone in the blink of an eye, that's how much power governments have of the internet these days. Free internet is now a distant dream.

Nor do they have the 10 year wealth of meticulously tagged, index and archvied database of albums

Pirate Bay is an index, not a tracker. It's just a big list of magnet links and some text. That's why the entire site fits on a USB or whatever they said back when they made a big deal out of it. It's a lot harder to take down but it also doesn't have the capabilities of a tracker. I tried it out. I can barely navigate the UI since it's a gigantic clusterfuck and ignores my theme settings, but after some effort I managed to find what resembles a search box and typed in “zhao jiazhen”. No results

Not sure what you're doing differently. Oh well

The UI is a worthless piece of unintuitive crap, they couldn't have made it worse if they had tried.
They have the music, though.

Picrelated is how you search, and you're supposed to share some of your own folders in return or people might refuse to share with you.

Look, I don't give a shit about your dick-waving competitions. I just want to listen to music.

I'm not cherry-picking, I literally just picked the next few songs from my playlist (which is randomly generated from my collection). This is not about “look mom my tastes are obscure”, this is about figuring out whether thepiratebay is a viable replacement for what for me. And based on my small test, it isn't even close.

The odds of me getting so exceptionally unlucky that the next 16 _randomly selected_ songs in my database are exactly those which are still missing from tpb are exceedingly low. Are you trying to say I just got unlucky?

This is what it looks like for me. What am I missing? Also, why the fuck is it asking me for a login and password? Where do I even sign up? I thought this thing was supposed to be p2p

Do you happen to have a link to the bug tracker so I can at least report all of these bugs I'm running into (like it ignoring my fucking system-wide qt settings that every single other Qt program, EVEN FUCKING SKYPE, manages to stick to)
>>
>>57577011
Also is there like a command line interface to this thing? GUIs give me cancer and can't be run on a headless server
>>

>This is what it looks like for me. What am I missing?
Fuck if I know, I just started using it recently.
Probably you need to share something first before people allow you to search their collection.
Go to Option -> File sharing and use the "Share folder" option on the top bar.

>Also, why the fuck is it asking me for a login and password? Where do I even sign up? I thought this thing was supposed to be p2p
You don't actually have to register anywhere, just pick a username/password and if it isn't already taken you're in.
>>
>>57577011
id rather just not download music than deal with something that looks like that
>>
>>57577011
>>57577035
Oh, I see there's a “connect” button at the top that seems to do nothing. And I finally figured out why “check ports” does nothing - it opens a fucking webpage in my webbrowser (on a completely different workspace, go figure)

Does this shit use a central server to store accounts then or what? Can you link me to a whitepaper documenting the design? I sort of don't trust this thing remotely
>>
>>57577067
Again, I don't know. I'm not a shill and I'm not their tech support, I just started using it recently.

Probably there's got to be some centralized servers somewhere to bootstrap you into the network, but I think the account system is P2P too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulseek
>Soulseek depends on a pair of central servers. One server supports the original client and network Version 156, with the other supporting the newer network (functioning with clients 157 and QT).[7] While these central servers are key to coordinating searches and hosting chat rooms, they do not actually play a part in the transfer of files between users, which takes place directly between the users concerned. (See Single Source Downloads below).
Oh good, so it's really just another public tracker. Oh well, better than the pirate bay. I just wish they actually used torrent instead of some own crappy protocol.
>>
>>57577115
Oh hey, looks like this thing has independent clients as well

Hopefully they're better than the proprietary atrocity

How well did that work out for you in the past? Oh yeah it got you right here, with no source for music, and a bunch of whinig about how you'll never be able to find music again or something.
>>
>>57577142
That nicotine+ client looks and feels _way_ better than the official proprietary garbage. It's also open-source. Sadly it's gtk+ based instead of qt based but at least it doesn't override my theme so it's okay.
>>
>>57577222
Oh great, it also doesn't work. Always fails logging in (INVALIDPASS). The official client works fine

Oh well, that's what you get for letting python programmers handle anything.

>If you fail this you are a braindead retard and don't deserve to use the internet let alone download music
Implying everyone jerks off to formats and sound quality.

I've always been a content kind of guy. In music the content is the actual music, not the sound quality. Sound quality fags tend to be insufferable, practically incapable of appreciatng MUSIC, only the sound quality.

Seems like it depends on the torrent. Is the guy hosting the folder the only person who will actually upload it?
