It's only been two days since I've ordered this bad boy and i'm getting rather impatient.
This will be my first mechanical keyboard I have ever owned.
So I guess an opening topic should be what was your first mechanical keyboard?

F122 or M122? They both look so similar and I can never tell the difference despite owning an F122 myself. Very nice either way, you'll love it!
>>
Okay, so I'm looking for something I thought would be simple to find: a fullsize black keyboard with Gateron Browns and blue LEDs (or RGB of course). But I can't for the life of me find such a board. Glorious PC Gaming Race's modular one comes so very, very, very close, but it has red LEDs.

Does anyone know of a board that matches my description? Would it be possible to replace the LEDs with blue ones, and how difficult would it be? All the LED replacement tutorials I've seen are for switch-mounted ones, but the GGMR uses surface mounted ones with clear switches. Is there a blue LED or RGB modular board available in fullsize somewhere?

Is there a way to get/make a TKL with a trackpoint? I fucking love my RT3200, but its rubberdome.
>>
So I recently ordered a Unicomp Model M and I have to say that I am blown away by how nice this thing is to type on. I think I finally managed to find a keyboard that I pretty much never bottom out the keys on, which was still regularly an issue for my with the Cherry MX Clears.

As far as I can tell, the two main differences are that the springs seems to provide damping on the downstroke that almost feels like the keys are cushioned at the bottom of their travel, and the Model M has a much bigger gap between the amount of force required to actuate the keys and the amount of force required to bottom them out.

I'm using an 80s rubber dome keyboard now and its much sturdier then any modern keyboard I've used before. Its got all the keys I need and I can reprogram it so I don't really care
>>
>>57560658
on-board macro support?
>>
>>57560682
whats that?
Since the keyboard is so old I found the firmware and its pretty simple to modify it.

Also this keyboard is very heavy and well built for a rubberdome. It looks like a slimmed down version of the IBM model M that weighs about 1.8 kilos and has dye-sub PBT keycaps, so even though it was made in 1989 it still looks brand new
>>
>>57560551
How is v60 compared to the Pok3r ?
Also how are the switches in v60 like?
>>
>>57560854
I mean the gateron browns**
>>
>>57560890
gateron browns are smoother and more tactile, which is why some people prefer them over cherry switches.
>>
>>57560819
>>57560682
scratch that I don't think firmware is the correct term, but basically someone used an oscilloscope to figure out what the interface was and the wrote a program that can translate it. So I just copy pasted what he did. I can then edit it to do whatever I want.
>>
>>57560819
ability to program multi-key macros at will using just the keyboard. increases work efficiency in some situations. not sure why the concept was largely abandoned.

meme diagonal keys are also a significant bonus, and I could never go back to four-way. another concept where I'm not sure why it was abandoned, especially given that they just leave an empty space on the keyboard where five keys could fit. the second space key works great with remapping.

I definitely think there are better looking vintage models, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a keyboard that's as wide-purpose functional as the anykey.
>>
>>57561035
>meme diagonal keys are also a significant bonus
just curious do you use them daily? My numpad has those but the last time I used them was just now when I remembered that they exist. Its not something I use at all.
>>
>>57560928
I see, so the 3 options i have so far are
pok3r for 120£
v60 with gateron for 85£
v60 cherries for 110£
So, are there any advantages of buying v60 over pok3r other than the small price drop ? (keeping in mind poker gives aluminium case, better keycaps more programability) ??

I bought pic related off eBay for about $30 a year ago and am pretty happy with it. Am I missing it out by not having a board with real MX switches/a normal layout? Is it worth a ~$60 net loss to sell/upgrade?
>>
>>57561091
actually yes, but only because I play dorf fort. I have the second space key remapped to enter, "end" remapped to "-", "page down" remapped to "+", insert/home/pageup remapped to d/z/v. I literally bought this keyboard to increase dwarf fortress playing efficiency, but it flowed over into work and I regularly remap keys or program macros temporarily just for convenience when I have to repeat a lot of the same typing, and I wonder why this isn't a popular function with programming-related work.
>>
>>57561093
the aluminum case on the pok3r is spray painted so it ships off very easily.
As far as programmablity is concerned then >>57544311

PBT keycaps are really nice and personally I can never go back to ABS after using them.

Also you never considered alps switches. The quiet clicks are even quieter then rubberdome and more tactile then gateron or cherry. If you like the loudness then you can get them unsilenced.
>>
I want to get this just for the cringey keycaps.

I'm looking for high quality (blank) keycaps for mx cherry switches. I just got a set of "DSA PBT/ABS" blanks crom pimpmykeyboard. The texture and shape are nice, but on some of the modifiers are a bit imperfect.

GMK is pretty high quality, but if you want Dye-sub PBT then this GB in on right now:

other wise anything from NPKC, Vortex, Ducky, and Gateron are fine.

lol no Gaterons make switches and keycaps that work with all cherry mounts

Cherry is overrated. Gateron and Zealios are where it's at.

but Gateron has some cheap boards you should try.
Their switches aren't gritty like Cherry.

Ask your self this anon: How many people need cash registers and How many "gamers" are there?
Its simple supply and demand, there are more shops and stores that are willing to spend money buying several of these, vs some niche market of gamers.

And these are real cherry mx keyboards. If you don't mind the weird layouts they are excellent mechanical keyboards. Pic related can be found for under 40 bucks at market surplus store

That is it. Back then when Cherry made mechanical keyboards they used their own doubleshot process to make extremely high quality keycaps that even gives PBT a run for its money. Of course that was to expensive to make such a high quality product so it was then sold off to GMK who now continues to make them. Gateron and NPKC came along and started to manufacture clones that aren't anywhere near as good.
They are more for people who want to try out what a slimmer profile feels like, without spending over a hundred dollars for keycaps

there really is no optimal switch and the noise their actuation mechanisms makes doesn't really matter since bottoming out the switches is louder.

Now blues are tactile and clicky, while blacks/reds are linear, and browns feel like reds with sand in them.
>>
>>57562855
So would it be safe to say that red/black are what I want?
>>
>>57562904
rubberdomes are tactile, but since yours are so old they must have lost that. So yes if you want a better typing experience without the much then get reds/blacks. Browns are barely tactile.

Well I've got to give it to you faggots.

I've had my mechanical meme keyboard for about a month now and I love it.

It has made me hate the keyboard in my office at work, but I don't want to carry my KB back and forth every day like an autistic, but I don't really want to buy a second keyboard either.

Up next, a wrist rest of some kind and maybe an aluminum case.

Im thinking about buying one mechanical keyboard, and since its my first and would not understand the difference between a 200 € and a 35 € im thinking of buying this cheap chink AULA keyboard.

What do you guys think is it better to order from the chinks or build a custom one? Also do you have to map it or does windows doanload drivers automatically for custom ones?

I'll give you a serious answer. The difference between a 200 dollar and 35 dollar is quality and features. Aula keyboards use knock off switches which are inconsistent do to their low quality control. It wouldn't surprise me if an LED dies.
Now the more expensive you get the better the build quality ex: Dye-sub/doubleshot keycaps, plate mounted switches, dual layer PCB, metal construction. You also get more features such as function layer mapping, programmable macros, programmable LED lighting with high quality LEDs.
Also certain layouts cost more due to them being a niche product.

Ok i got the point, your keyboard is gonna last much longer, and its gonna be worth the money.

Im not looking to buy a nice one though, i want to buy a 'test drive' one, and decide for myself if mechanicals are worth their money, and only then spent more.

What would you reccomend in my position.

You could always go to a box store and try out some mechanical keyboards. Most of them have Razer and Corsair keyboards at least.
Now if you want super cheap you could buy used, or a Chinese keyboard. There is nothing wrong with buying a Chinese keyboards, but some are better then other. I'd recommend either Tomoko, Magiforce, or Royal Kludge if you want to go the Chinese way.

Otherwise if you want better quality then get a Ducky One with Dye-sub PBT keycaps and programmable macros

If you've never had a mechanical keyboard before, it'd be an improvement over rubber domes. However if you want a tactile MX switch, get clears. The bump on browns is barely there in comparison.
>>
>>57569435
they are pretty underwhelming in the tactility department. If you want to stick with cherry then get clears or tactile greys. If you want cherry clones then Gaterons are better since they are smoother and more tactile. Otherwise you can get Alps and buckling springs.

the command key should have been replaced with a shift key, the right shift key should have been moved down to replace the arrows and a return key should have taken its place. the space bar then could have been centered and flanked on the left by the command key and on the right by an fn key. there should be an fn layer for arrows.
this way, with the same footprint, you could have almost all the functionality or a regular keyboard

There's one guide of many.

You can buy gateron switches for $0.30 a piece and you can get a microcontroller+wires+diodes for around 15 bucks, 30 if you want to use a teensy to make it easier. Keycaps can be free/cheap if you salvage an old cherry keyboard. The plate/case can be made with 10 bucks of steel or aluminum if you have the machines to cut it, or you can use a block of hard wood and hand cut it if you want.

Oh, pok3r is very much within the price range, its just i dont want to spend 300 pounds on a keyboard, especially since it will be my first mechanical.

I looked at a lot of chink stuff, but everything seems to be a waste of money due to the countless issues that those keyboards have, so i figured it would be better to add few £ extra and go for the proper stuff in which case im left with 2 choices

Pok3r (120£) or v60 (75-90£) and im not sure which one is a better choice.

On one side people claim that poker has better case and better programmability, but anon from last thread claimed that programmability on that keyboard isnt as great as they say and the case is spray painted so the paint will chip off easily.

Also pok3r has much better keycaps.

On other hand v60 is cheaper and apparently it lacks the programmability issues that Pok3r has.

Any help is really appreciated.

Pic related: my current keyboard and its surprisingly good for a dome keyboard

Ded rivets. The plate won't miss a handful assuming it hasn't already lost a shitton.

it's absolutely perfect for me, use it one handed while
drawing
and I can find the DELETE and arrow keys by touch alone juuuuuuuuust fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine
>>
>>57576687
I don't have a key puller, so I either have to order one and wait for it to arrive or pull them all out by hand, which I don't feel like doing half past one in the night. But I will probably just have to do that to check I guess.

Is pic related the standard when having two colored keycaps? Or should I skip the function keys? The space bar I can't change because of the size difference.
>>
>>57576818
Just use a paperclip anon, also you can do whatever you want, its your keyboard after all.

http://lifehacker.com/make-a-diy-keycap-puller-out-of-two-paper-clips-585305038
>>
>>57576848
But that needs two paperclips, anon. You think I'm a millionaire or something?

I just wondered what the standard was, but I guess it's not that hard to switch a couple of F keys. I will probably do it tomorrow then.

thinking about getting a pok3r at some point but have used full sized keyboards for my entire life. how much of an adjustment period am i in for?

Not very much if you're a touch typist. A lot get bothered by the arrow keys, but that's something to get used to as well.

Tell me why I shouldn't get a Ducky Shine 5 RGB
>>
Any comments about G810 ?

First mechanical, only used membranes before.

Board will get HEAVY use, 8 hours a day, will be 5+ years before it's replaced.

Should I expect the paint to fade on keys ?

Because the Ducky shine 6 is already out for pre-order

Ouch. I'm sorry for you, but Omron has always had problems producing mechanical switches, even back when they did clones of popular switches they still failed.

The problem is if the switches fail then good luck finding easy fixes. Also replacing the garbage stock keycaps will be impossible.

Best of luck to you anon.

What the fuck are you doing that necessitates in buying new keycaps.
>>

wat, there are no comments like yours anywhere.

The only negative stuff I see online is that you can't buy new keycaps, and people say Go ducky as if they're paying for the chance that they need to bash a zombie in the head with their keyboard.

that's good to hear. the one thing i was worried about was the whole function layer for everything but i think i can get used to it

Don't wait a month. It's easy as fuck to get a refund with eBay. Message him and ask what's going on, and if he hasn't replied by Monday, open a dispute with eBay. If he doesn't respond to the case, you can "ask eBay to step in" after four days, and they'll give you your money back.
>>
>>57575126
Gateron is so smooth.
I prefer Topre but I want to try lubed ergo clears.
>>
>>57577740
Laser etching removes the plastic.
The plastic must be worn away for the laser etching to go away.
You might be thinking of laser filling, which has something added in the hole the etching creates. On my Choc Mini it wore away within a few months.

How serious of an issue is this going to be ?

I use a keyboard for literally like 5-6 years, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Should have self-cleared or at least dealt with a seller who actually knows how to fill out a customs form. Computer equipment made in the US is duty-free and if it's obsolete/used electronic equipment or can be claimed as for scrap/parts then it has negligible customs value and will also be HST exempt.

So I recently picked up a BTC 5100 from a guy and it's missing one of the function keys on the top, the problem is that while the rest of the keys are cherry mx mounts, the top row is something else I can't pinpoint what type it is

top row of pic related is what I'm looking for. The missing key and slider are the insert key, if anyone can help me get a hold of them I'll ship them a full cherry mx mount double shot keycap set I harvested from a packard bell keyboard.

My switch tester has arrived.

When I first tried the different switches (there's gateron, cherry, greentech or something, and kali, as well as one razer switch) my initial thought was "this is some autismal shit", not noticing much difference. Then I went back to the laptop keyboard.

I'm glad I bought this thing. I was first thinking brown switches might be best for me, but after playing with it for a while there's no doubt blue's are best. I just need that click. It's so satisfactory. I don't know how it'll be in gaming, but I mostly use a controller anyway.

Regardless, I was thinking of getting the Anne Pro RGB keyboard. Perfect size and shit, not to mention wireless. Are there any others I should take a peak at before finally ordering?
