They're semi-public now. You just have to use an external search engine to find shit on their site, and you can grab magnet links without registering.

Youre a fucking idiot

I found music on that site that was not sold or available at any place. It wasnt about audiophiles since that shit is a placebo anyway, it was the fact you can find some rare videogame music/metal albums that are obscure and/or long forgotten.

Idiots (>>57558834, >>57558848, >>57558812, >>57558793, etc) don't realize that What.CD was a huge archive of music that might never be found ever again. Seriously. There was music on What.CD that could not be found anywhere else. Anywhere.

Even rutracker?
>>
How good is Usenet these days?
>>
>>57558886
Yeah. It really isn't even close. Along with the amount of formats the music was all in. It's just sad, regardless of whether or not you were even on the site or agree with piracy. Music that did exist, might never see the light of day again if the person who downloaded never uploads it again.
>>
Can someone answer why they are doing this?

"Due to some recent events"

What are they referring to?

I rarely pirate things anymore just because I don't have much need for anything new.

Every now and then I'll use 'ExtraTorrent' because it's supposed to be the next biggest site apart from the now-defunct KAT.

The domain is already in the process of being sold. It will remain a music website, but not in it's current form, instead it will be operated as a legit music streaming service backed by a large, currently unnamed company.

One of the lesser-talked-about things that What.CD did better than any other tracker was how they sorted discographies, in my opinion. Anyone could go to wikipedia and look at the list of studio albums a band released, but with What.CD you could see all the EPs, live albums, singles, etc. in chronological order. Often times I would just go to the What.CD page of a band I liked and just scroll through to find rare releases I hadn't previously heard about.

I'm really gonna miss that :'/

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”
>>
>>57560831
This hurts, all the shit thats happened this year, finally something hits me a bit more closer to home and fuck I'm mourning.

I was there from a few days after launch and participated in the community, uploads and downloads, sharing information, and eventually making collages with everything from minimal techno to obscure grindcore which i recommended to other users and vice versa.

It was a community, a tight knit family, one that was judgement free with all your music taste and accepted your shitty Hatsune Miku obsession for what it was regardless of whether it is "real" music or not.

Although my activity may have waned in the last year, when someone PM'd me for a re-up or asked for any information regarding something similar to that shitty folktronica EP that was uploaded, I would go out of my way to find something I'd recommend.

Fuck 2016, R.I.P. What.cd

P.s - Just because I felt it was worthy of pointing out. What.cd and the music I discovered made me invest in thousands (probably 10's of thousands in hindsight) in music from vinyls and cd's, to say we as a community didn't support the Industry would be an insult to every music fan out there.

It's 2016, there should be no reason to be signed to a record company. Many have gotten famous with a label, just as many signed to labels go unnoticed as well.

Whatever happened to DIY music and advertising? Black Veil Brides is great example, getting exposure on Youtube. If it's possible, make it so Youtube doesn't make money off of you and sell the CDs from your own site.

Nice justification for your illegal activities you got there. Artists are probably not making anything from album sales, because faggots like you cheat them out of their wages for their efforts by pirating stuff.

Musicians are not bound to choose Label X over Label Y. They could very well open up their own labels instead. But then, you would of course still pirate their things, wouldn't you?

THis only applies to to major label artists. And even then their sales volume is big enough that they don't starve to death. In fact, they would even see their work much more honored, if criminals like you didn't make up bullshit justifications like "It's okay! They don't get any money from the albums anyway!
