Work has given me a choice of an HP laptop or a MBP. I'm leaning towards the MBP on the assumption that it will be easier to find and install drivers for that hardware if I boot a linux distro. Does anyone have any experience installing linux distros on Mac hardware? What are the pain points? Should I just accept an HP laptop and try booting a linux distro on that instead?

Which HP?
The business class ones have great Linux support

if you need linux software, you could always use virtualization

OSX doesn't support docker too well (shit crashes all the time) and we'll be using docker quite heavily so I'd rather use linux, especially given that's our deployment target

I use a VM at the moment but it's an extra layer I'd rather not have to deal with when I have the chance to upgrade my machine. If it all goes south I can always fall back to a VM on either windows or OSX but I'm curious to know what troubles I'd encounter if I tried installing a linux distro

I'd say it would be some crazy expensive enterprise deal though

Pro-tip: Carry your favorite browser on a flash drive and never have to run IE even once after reinstall.

I have a Kali Linux Live USB for my rMBP 2013. It works flawlessly, everything just works out of the getgo: WiFi, HiDPI Display, SD Card reader, keyboard lighting, screen dimming, etc. haven't tried any thunderbolt functionality. I have no idea about USB C support either if you were to get the newer models, but basically, if you get the right distro, you'll be golden. MacOS itself isn't bad if you get to know it, personally I prefer it over Linux.

I also forgot to mention that I have no real experience with the dedicated GPU using a Linux system, you probably will have to find compatibale drivers if you would want to use that over integrated graphics.
I experimented with dual booting Arch on my iMac for a little while and if i remember correctly the wiki offers a guide specific to macs. Other than that I imagine at the very least user friendly distros such as Ubuntu and Mint would work fine
