The hacker who shut down large parts of the US internet last month was probably a disgruntled gamer, said an expert whose company closely monitored the attack Wednesday.
Dale Drew, chief security officer for Level 3 Communications, which mapped out how the October 21 attack took place, told a Congressional panel that the person had rented time on a botnet - a network of web-connected machines that can be manipulated with malware - to level the attack.
Using a powerful malware known as Mirai, the attacker harnessed some 150,000 "Internet of Things" (IoT) devices such as cameras, lightbulbs and appliances to overwhelm the systems of Dynamic Network Services Inc, or Dyn, which operates a key hub in the internet, according to Drew.
The so-called distributed denial of service attack jammed up traffic routing the Dyn's servers to major websites like Amazon, Twitter and Netflix for hours before the attack could be overwhelmed.
"We believe that in the case of Dyn, the relatively unsophisticated attacker sought to take offline a gaming site with which it had a personal grudge and rented time on the IoT botnet to accomplish this," he said.
Mr Drew did not identify the gaming site but The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the attack, said it was the PlayStation network.

The attack occurred around the very time Julian Assange was being captured from the embassy in London. The attack was to pre-emptively disrupt the dead man's switch from being activated. Assange hasn't been heard from since the embassy had its internet cut -- also, the WikiLeaks staff had all been simultaneously captured and now have some gubmint operative running the WikiLeaks twitter account. This is why they will not or can not verify their identity using their key. The more you know.

But that's not possible, because his internet was cut, judging from the image you posted, 21 oct or before. However, in that interview the earliest it could be is the 28th because that's when Comey made the statement they are discussing, more likely earliest the 29th, or what seems to be Nov 1st from other context clues.

Judging from the font rendering, the poster is using GNU/Linux. The font uses only light hinting whereas Windows uses heavy hinting and OS X no hinting at all, by default.
They probably forgot to install an NTP client.
NTP is not default on some GNU/Linux distributions.
Windows and OS X, conversely, enable NTP by default.

This attack only disrupted users using Dyn's DNS servers. Anyone using any other DNS server experienced no issues whatsoever. Any user experiencing loss of internet would only have to change their DNS server to something like Google's 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 and they'd have service. This likely would have been easy to identify because the error message for such a failure tends to be "DNS lookup failed"
It wouldn't successfully stop a deadman switch unless it was made by a retard.
