Is there anything in particular to pay attention to when buying vintage watches on eBay?

Looking at vostok komandirskie/amphibia and seiko skx's because /wt/ memes or something.

But there isn't really a way to tell the quality of the movement, is there?
>>
What's a good watch for a kid? I've been thinking f-91w
>>
So what does everyone think about the quality of modern Seiko watch movements (I say this because I have no idea if the quality has changed)? All I can find on the internet is about how good Swis movements are but I feel that may be more of a prestige thing more than anything else, or am I missing something important here?
>>
>>57547415
What movement are you talking about in particular? Personally the only one I own is 7s26 and that thing is generally considered as a tank. The accuracy is variable, but it's cheap and sturdy. No idea about any of the other Seiko movements
>>
>>57547439
I have no idea. I kind of meant as a general rule of thumb, unless there are particular ones that stand out above the rest, or ones that are utter garbage in comparison?

>>
>>57547415
I'd say their movements are pretty damn good in general. The cheap ones are well designed and relatively sturdy, the midrange ones are similar but made to a higher standard, and then some for the high end.
No real crazy complications or originality, apart from the spring drive, which some people don't care about and others love.
They just realeased their first tourbillon...
The quartz movements in the Grand Seikos are really nice for what they are though.

But yeah. Nothing unexpected, but always well made. And Spring Drive.
The movements aren't the main attraction in Seiko watches for me, to be honest.

If you have to ask us, you shouldn't be buying vintage watches online.

The resources exist to teach yourself well enough about any vintage watch model to be able to judge for yourself which are worth bidding on and which to avoid.

I went from not knowing anything about vintage Seikos to having my local watchmaker start referring people TO ME for information on the subject.

How? Google. Reading. Participating in forums where the models I was interested in were being discussed.
>>
>>57548838
Looks like shit desu. Never liked Breitlings, dial is far too complicated.

I'd rather have pic related instead, similar style, but not as shit. There are also models with a white chapter ring like a breitling, and also in havana tones.

And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

The Omega that had the heritage died when Swatch bought them, ended Omega's internal movement design and manufacturing, and turned them into just another Swatch marketing brand casing ETA movements.

Also, in not knowing just how much heritage Seiko has as a watchmaker you're doing nothing but broadcasting your own horological ignorance.

Well basically what I found out is there really are few producers of NATO straps.

Because they've been continuously gaining popularity, there are more and more sellers yet no additional diversity of straps, and the fact they all sell the same 10 or so types of straps became all the more obvious. Despite some of the more reputed sellers having claimed for years to produce their straps themselves, you now find their own "original" straps up for sale much cheaper from other sellers.

But I have transcended nylon, and I am now reaching the final frontier: I'll be opening my own NATO strap store where I'll be actually open and honest about what I sell, because seriously, a perfect high-end NATO doesn't have to cost more than $10. I'm contacting the best manufacturers out there and I'll have them make the dankest straps ever.

can you make some that are longer than normal?
i find most 5-ring bracelets are a little shorter than i'd like when they're used correctly
>>
>>57553466
Not exactly, they merged with the original supplier. And then it's not like the originals were great anyway, military equipment is always contracted to the lowest bidder. And then the spec isn't perfect, and it's not like a piece of nylon with steel buckles is a complicated thing to do, albeit chinks certainly do rip you off on countless points.

It's the most "authentic" for sure, if that counts for something to you. But they're not the best NATOs.
>>
>>57553496
Clearly that's a priority to me, but only because chinks make them short. I'll be posting the guide to pick a NATO anyway, which covers:
>type of band
>length of overall strap
>length of extra flap
>material
>color, types of dies and paint
>thickness
>seams
>buckles
>material and shape of rings
>holes and ends finishing

Those are roughly all the things on which you get chinked with a cheap NATO.

I need advice /wt/. I'm going to further mod my slavshit Amphibia, this time by giving it fully lumed numerals by reluming a stock dial.
I kinda like 3/6/9/12 dials so I'll be using one of those, but I need to find a perfect balance between the most lume surface area (i.e. large numerals and indeces) and the least autism (some Vostok dials as we know can be very neckbeard-tier). I prefer blue dials, but some designs like the 6-9-12 scubadude and the one in the upper-right only come in black. Mine in it's current state is in the lower left, for reference.

So give me your opinions.

People hate fashion watches because they often have busy and ugly dials, while being flashy and oversized as hell. Also for putting in cheap quartz movements and thus not being "haute horologie." In my opinion as long as the watch looks good and is not hugely overpriced there is nothing wrong with adding a cheap quartz. It will still hold time better than any mechanical and should last a decent time. And people being cunts on 4chan is just banter

Anyone? I'm down to these five. Pic is what I'll be aiming for, but Favinov's lumed dials cost as much as a brand new Amphibia, so I'd rather do it myself. Also I'll probably get some Neptune hands too.

Upper left would have the most lume surface area, but isn't it a bit outlandish/neckbeard-tier? Anyone own that dial?

Upper right might be the most balanced in appearance, but it only comes in black.

Lower left might be the winner, but I'm not sure how it will look irl. Anyone have that one too?

>>
>>57567432
Strontium aluminate and europium are the most important ingredients but adding trace amounts of other dopants is what change both the frequency and intensity of the emitted light. A very small change in proportions makes a huge difference in the electron behavior of the material which is what makes creating new formulations hard.

I wouldn't say unparalleled, they have several rivals in quality at that price pount and they definitely let some big fuckups slip past QC on occasion. A lot of their draw is marketing ultimately just like any other luxury brand.
>>
>>57570683
the reasons normies like rolex is because of marketing.
the reason people who like watches like rolex is because of the quality. they're not impressive on a spec sheet; they're just really, really well-made. you can wear them every day, unlike many other "luxury" watches.
the "timeless" designs are also part of it, I suppose. like it or not, a daytona, sub or day date are instantly recognizable as a nice watch, and it does count for something.
vintage rolex is another bag of chips altogether though. those guys are just mentally ill.

if you want to look into it, hodinkee has a nice article on their visit to the rolex factories: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/inside-rolex
>>
>>57570710
and that's the right way to do it.
although sometimes an implied multiplication (like in the image) is considered to take priority, you should really use parentheses if you don't want left to right.
or don't write your divisions inline like in that image.

>>57571943

One is called a NATO, one is called a ZULU.

I found something pretty cool: you can wear a NATO without a watch on your right wrist; if you put it with the extra strap buckle on top it looks like a cool bracelet!

Will post pics tomorrow, I urge you to try all the girls will love it.

there are (incomplete/obsolete) lists out there too if you just google "free watch catalogs"

It's a good watch, it tends to be a bit overpriced these days due to the rumours that it's been discontinued.

I got an SKX009 as my first 'real watch' and it's been great. If I wear it every day and vary the position I keep it at night I can get the accuracy to less than a second over a week.

They did reduce the volume of production drastically, and introduced the Turtle re-issue. Though you can still get them brand new for 185~

I sold mine (again), as it was a bit too bland.

Not really.

My collection goes from 5 to 15~ watches as time goes by, yet usually only 3 or 4 are beater/tool watches.

Pic related is an example, the blue Poljot and Peniswave are gone and sold. The Amphibia got recased again and i have 4 watches incoming.

The Seiko monster is REALLY agressive. Do you wear it at work, for example?

Cool collection btw. What are your incoming watches?

>Seiko monster is REALLY agressive

Only way it could get more aggressive is if i get a MM300 waffle strap for it, and it's back in stock....

I only wear the Monster and Amphibia (Until i also get a SRP777) where i serve as the humidity there is high enough to ruin most watches pretty quickly. I recall taking my Poljot there and the leather strap nearly disintegrated after 3 days.

Incoming:
>An uncommon Daini-made Kingpenis which will get a pretty acrylic crystal (pic related).
>SRPA29 which was traded for a Moonview, will likely get flipped via the bay.
>A nearly mint 66-7109 bargain that needs a new crystal as well.
>Komandirskie K-39 GMT that will likely get flipped if it's too big to be comfortable
