So my Hitachi Deskstar has done well up until this point. It's about 9 years old now, but it's finally begun to crop up some bad sectors.
So I'm gonna have to replace it. It's still stable enough to clone, so I was looking into the SSD option. I figured 500 GB's would work, as that's the size drive I got now. However, my friend has told me of this magical new tech called m.2.

Now, here's my question to those who've actually used these.
Obviously, both would be a tremendous upgrade. However, is it worth actually upgrading to an m.2 or is 2.5 still the way to go in terms of stability, speed, cost, and actual execution of tech. (That last one obviously means that I could use an m.2 but unless it's specifically set up, it might as well be a 2.5.)

Pic related since this...thing is apparently a hard drive.

Get an Intel 600p
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167412

Get a m.2 to pcie adapter with a heatsink.
>>
>>57544508
That doesn't tell me if it's worth using over 2.5.
>>
>>57544598
Ah, sorry. There's no difference in terms of stability/reliability. The m.2 is substantially faster because it runs over PCIe rather than SATA.
>>
>>57544641
Key note to add though: if you're using anything below Windows 8.1 you'll need an update to be able to boot from m.2. Linux works regardless of drive interface.

>Get a m.2 to pcie adapter with a heatsink.
Is the heatsink really necessary? My adapter doesn't have one and I haven't had any issues yet for the 10 months.
>>
>>57544652
That's more like it. Still gonna be way faster than traditional. Since I'm using a very, very butchered 7.1, that answers my question.

I really should upgrade eventually, but I've heard so much bad shit about 10.
>>
>>57544695
I just got done trying out Windows 8.1 and 10 for a year. I went back and installed 7 again. Just need to put the M.2 driver on your flash drive to load it up so the installer can detect the drive.
>>
>>57544695
10 isn't worth it. The only justification is needing to play the newest AAA games, and even then it's better to dual-boot or virtualize.
>>
>>57544678
It may not be but it's never a bad idea. Samsung drives have an issue with overheating and throttling. I'm not sure if Intel has ever had that issue.
>>
>>57544715
>even then it's better to dual-boot or virtualize
Or just hope devs use Vulkan over DX12.

>>57544734
What's a good program to check the temps of my 950? Speccy doesn't detect the temperature of it.

>What's a good program to check the temps of my 950? Speccy doesn't detect the temperature of it.
Unless Samsung has a utility to read it I don't think any of the standard ones can. If you wanted to know for sure, grab a laser temperature sensor from harbor freight.

Guess I'll just use the old Deskstar for 10 until it completely bricks and then I'll buy a 1tb.
I'll just get a 2.5 since I just checked my current build and I won't have the channels for the m.2.

I'll have to remember to get one when I got the MB for it.

Thanks for the help, /g/!
>>
>>57544893
I should specify that I'll use the old dying drive for ten and get the 2.5 NOW. I'll get the M.2 later when I replace the MB since the one I got is still working well and there's no way to justify replacing it.

How about one for AHCI?
>>
>>57544845
Since I already have an adapter without a heatsink, how about just tossing some memory heatsinks on the drive.

Something like these
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002BWXW6E
or
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014KKY3KI/
>>
>>57544923
AHCI is a SATA spec, it doesn't work natively over PCIe. If you were going AHCI you might as well just get a 2.5".
>>
>>57544938
It should help some.
>>
>>57544989
>If you were going AHCI you might as well just get a 2.5".
I don't think so. SATA 3 is limited to 600MB/s. I think the PCI-E AHCI drives do better than that.
>>
>>57545011
AHCI is constrained to SATA speeds since it needs a SATA controller. NVMe is able to directly connect over PCIe.
>>
>>57545135
>AHCI is constrained to SATA speeds
No, it's not.

Yes, it is.

Well, ok. They managed to route a HDD protocol over pcie using a slightly faster controller. Still doesn't come close to NVMe.
>>
>>57545270
OK great. Do you want to be stupid or do you actually have a suggestion for a good PCI-E AHCI SSD
>>
>>57545294
I'm not suggesting an AHCI SSD. Use google if you want one.
>>
>>57545339
Great, go be useless elsewhere
>>
Guys, It's just hard drives. Is it worth getting that upset over them?
>>
>>57545357
Pull the dicks out of your eyes. For the money you'll spend on an AHCI version you could have had the NVMe version. You're literally wasting money.
>>
>>57545359
Watching autists get butthurt is fun.
>>
>>57545371
Yea, except my machine can't boot from NVMe, cocksock.
>>
>>57545494
BIOS-restricted? You can boot anything Windows 7 and newer (with W7 requiring the driver).
>>
>>57545516
NVMe boot drives weren't supported until X99/C610.
>>
>>57545547
What chipset do you have?
>>
>>57545547
NVMe is supported through a BIOS update on most boards past the 6- series.
>>
>>57545605
C602
>>57545634
I'll check, but I never saw any of the BIOS changelogs announce NVMe support.
>>
>>57544508
But can you use it as a boot drive?
>>
>>57546871
Yes
>>
>>57544641
that is misleading. m.2 spec allows to use sata /or/ pcie depending on B/M key.
>>
>>57544481
>M.2
>Sits 1cm above motherboard
>Reaches 110c

Never. Get a pcie or 2.5
