I am looking for a tablet and I realized I have no idea how the tablet environment is.
Is it just like the smartphone market? idiots getting apple? Samsung churning uncomplicated standards?
Can someone recommend a tablet for the following:
- Reading and annotating (scientific articles)
- Watching movies in the train/plane
- Light gaming (like angry birds - light)
Are there even custom roms for tablets or are we doomed to be boted to china?

You should specify a price and location

I asked the same question a month ago.
I bought a Nexus 9 for something over a 100$ and I am happy with it.
I rooted it, I removed a lot of useless shit I wouldn't need, I got 4G LTE and I shitpost here all the time with it.

How is the custom ROM environment? enough stuff out there?

HTC Nexus 9?
Man, those costs 300 EUR here, what the fuck?

For the Nexus 9, the Wi-Fi version has regular updates and a bunch of ROMs. The LTE version isn't supported much by the modding community so there are a few releases, but I didn't have much of an interest in changing the ROM itself, I merely stripped the official one by removing almost everything from it.
For 200€ I'd say go for the Nexus 9 or perhaps a Samsung Galaxy S2.
Both models are outdated, but they're still pretty good.
Chinese also have some great tablets OP, you got dual boot Win32/Android for 150$

I dunno the English names for 'em, check the 4chan wiki, they have some recommendations.
Chinese Android don't have much availability with root or ROMs unless you plan on doing that yourself.
