IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Got 3000 euro budget to spend on a phone, laptop combo. I want to go all out GNU/linux. Im looking for atleast 1080p, touchscreen is Nice, but not required. Has to have 4 cores not hyperthreaded, if that's still possible on a laptop. GPU doesn't really matter since I won't be playing games on the thing. Storage capacity doesn't really matter either, I've got servers for that.
Something sleek, stealthy and with a nice keyboard is what I need. Also light is a big plus.

It is sad to see the direction Lenovo is taking this brand. Although not as sad as what Apple is doing to MBP.

But who am I to cry. I'll still probably buy a refurbished X260 in a few years despite its defects as it still has TrackPoint and a high quality keyboard feel.

I'm looking for a laptop for a ridiculously poorfag friend.
What do you recommend that would be 150€ MAX?

I'm open to suggestions, it may be a thinkpad, a "thinkpad", hp, dell, or whatever. Just sturdy and capable, for the price.

I'm worried about a computer old enough that the battery is almost dead. My experience with chink "compatible" batteries is horrible.

Also, X230 a cute.
>>
>>57531651
The old layout was better but the new feel of the keyboard is superior although I've heard this might depend on the keyboard supplier as Lenovo has multitude of those.

Source: I've owned and used daily X40, X61, X201, X220, X230 and am a proficient touch typist.

X40 and X61 were the master race though having both superior feel and layout. Sad that they are obsolete in regard to processing power and cannot be converted into stand alone keyboard+TrackPoint.

>>57531775
Riced up X201 or low end X220. Your friend just has to live with the battery they get at that price point. The price of usable ThinkPads starts to plateau around that price point. You could also look into T410s, T410, T420s, T420 if your friend doesn't mind the size.
>>
>>57531995
The 14 inch screen would actually be a plus, although those are bulkier.

>>

go for the t460p your getting more for your money 16gb, 1440p, dgpu, sadly no touch screen.
>>
>>57531650
>>57531522
There's also the issue of whether there's enough vertical space to fit the adapters and the CPU under the heatsink (likely not)
>>
>>57532352
There is none. Only for T420s. It flickers on regular T420 since the power hardware interferes with the adapter board while the T420s is laid out differently
>>
hey cackfaces, do any of you have the P50?
I'm thinking of getting one to replace my 2015 15" MBP, which disgusts me because it's fragile slab of reprocessed soda cans.

The P50 sounds pretty great, and the spec improvement would help me a lot (apart from the loss of one thunderbolt port), but 16:9 is abhorrent on a level beyond anything else conceivable. However, I've read that the P-series is a return to classic Thinkpad build quality, and that's something that would be worthwhile for me, even given the ratio (the W520 was the most recent model I could tolerate). Thoughts?

T450s with i7-5600U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, for anywhere between $900-1000, new with 3 year warranty.

Is it a good deal? Reading about them it seems T460 isn't very good, neither is the T440. People seem to agree T450s is the peak of the Thinkpad T series.

It also has hot-swappable battery, user replaceable RAM and an extra M.2 slot for an SSD.

Should I get it?

The issue is thus: normies view computers and phones as fashion accessories rather than tools. That's why software has so much effort put in to appearance now. It's dumn because if it was just the productivity they wanted then we'd be seeing a totally different technology.

So while a T60 may be still very capable, saying you use an old laptop isn't cool, man.

There's also the shameless consumerism part.

when you say lazy ass it already sounds like your problem is on another level. I've literally never done anything productive even on a micro scale in my entire life
>>
>>57541240
That sounds like an exaggeration.

Productivity is like a muscle. Just as you can't lift heavy before lifting light, so must you ease into this system, using small ideas from it at first and for small tasks (e.g. one easy task per day like 'make bed'), before you completely use this system and fully actualize all your goals.
>>

I dropped my t460 yesterday and it's fucked. It was way more powerful than I needed, so I'm looking for a much cheaper replacement.

I've got a new ultrabook in my workflow now, and I really don't need a powerful business class laptop any more.

I do, however, need a second laptop for light work stuff that I don't feel like explaining in detail.

How old can I go on a business laptop(pref thinkpad) and maintain modern compatibility and function?

Is there anything older than a T420 I should consider?

I need to do light programming and comfortably browse the internet.

Budget is $150, because I feel like i can find a t420 in that price range.

>>
>>57549676
stuck pixels are easy to fix. Just apply pressure

The pixel in question is black, and stays black so I assume it could be either. I'm aware of the heat/pressure tricks but I wouldn't want to risk doing more harm, in the event it really is unfixable and I have to return it
>>
>>57549676
"premium display" as in the IPS one?
IPS screens are a lot more likely to have defects since manufacturers haven't pretty much perfected making them.
>>57549758
That rarely fixes the problem, and usually only works on freshly stuck pixels.
Generally anything stuck for longer than a year will stay stuck for the rest of it's life.

>>
>>57549808
yep, its the premium flexview IPS display offered in the x220 I believe. would I be better off returning it or fixing it myself with the IBM FRU? I've done it before on other models, so I'm not worried about difficulty. I'm unsure if I want to dump half the cost of the computer itself into a panel. Hence why I'm considering returning
>>
>>57549873
should add everything else is fine, aside from wear you'd expect and needing thermal paste and the fan cleaned as its probably never had either done
>>
>>57549792
if its black, i am afraid its dead pixel

>>57549808
>That rarely fixes the problem
Perhaps I've been lucky but I've solved all my stuck pixels with persistent pressure (consistently applying pressure over a period of 2-3 days).
>>
>>57549873
Does it really bother you that much?
I mean I had 4 stuck pixels (all together) on my old monitor and after a week you get used to it
Odds are the seller will offer a partial refund, so I'd just save the $20-30 they'll probably offer you

I've had a T410 for a while now but I think the battery killed itself (I was getting warnings that it needed to be replaced). I didn't use it for a few days and it no longer turns on. Now, plugging in my power cord doesn't make anything light up on the thinkpad, and it doesn't turn on without the battery either. I ordered a replacement battery and a new power cord, thinking one of those might be the problem, but putting in a new battery and using the new cord doesn't change anything; no lights go on on the Thinkpad, and it does not turn on. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with it? Is it the charging port or something worse? Is it fucked?

If so, is a T420 the recommended cheap replacement?

Recently got an R61 on ebay. Don't bitch about it vs the T61, the only real differences are slightly thicker and slightly heavier and I got it dirt cheap.

Current specs
>14.1" widescreen (____x900)

>2gb ram
>Nvidia NVS 140M
>500gb 7200rpm drive
>DVD drive

Future upgrades
>Middleton bios (3gb Sata, 8gb ram, other processors)
>t8300
>4gb ram
>SSD OS drive
>drive Bay adapter
>500gb storage drive
>usb 3.0 cardbus
>second wifi pcie card
>new quality thermal paste (so I don't kill the GPU)

Should be solid. I have the ram already, the HDD drive Bay caddys are cheap, the t8300 cpus are sub $10. Only going to go for a 120gb SSD if I'm running a 500gb storage/backup drive. Pretty excited about it to be honest. Going to use it as my traveling laptop as I have something much more powerful at home.

Any other suggestions for it?

Not really. Some people say don't mix brands but it really doesn't matter. A slower speed ram than what your computer can handle isn't ideal though and going from 4gb of highspeeds to 6gb of high speed and lowspeed will probably slow you down everywhere you aren't using more than 4gb of ram.

Why do 99% of resellers not write the damn resolution?

I see you want to come across as a patrician, yet you use Windows 10 instead of Windows 7. Also, you are exaggerating your battery life. There is no way you can get 10 hours of browsing with that CPU and the 3 storage devices.
>>
>>57558811

because it's 1366 x 768

I actually made a fail thread on /g/ because I recently bought a latitude on ebay, resolution wasn't listed and it was 1366 x 768 (literal downgrade from my previous latitude)

replacement panel was 40 bucks, 2 way cable was 7 bucks... but that doesn't account for the effort and time it took to disassemble the whole fucking laptop to change the LCD cable, in the end I have a decent screen but holy shit I fucked up BIG LEAGUE and will never make that mistake again

message the seller, don't be like me

Narrow your search to the T60p, you'll at least eliminate all the 1024x768 trash that way.
>>
>>57558811
Usually when they don't list it, it's the default lowest.I suspect it's sold by people who don't think resolution is a big deal. Either way, always ask the seller.
>>
>>57558811
run the type number through the specs lookup tool in the OP

of course, the screen could've been replaced from the factory one, but it's not likely
>>
Why is the t400 line always such a spec-cuck compared to x200 and t500?

Considering getting the Dell Latitude E5470, it seems to be Dell's equivalent of T460 or T460p with a less shitty screen. Just not sure whether I want to go with the ULV CPU for better battery life or pay up and get the full fat 45W one.

Any thoughts on the E5470?

In your opinion are consumer grade Lenovo laptops worth the trouble of upgrading?

I've had this u430 touch for a little under three years now. It still works flawlessly but there are some things I'd like to change.

Questions:

I'm replacing the hard drive with a small SSD for primary storage. This would require moving things like /var, /tmp (which already is a ramdisk on most modern distros), cache's, etc. to ramdisk, so....

1.) Is 8GB RAM enough to do this comfortably? This would drop me to about 6GB ram usable, all I'm doing is shitposting and email with it.

2.) Where can I buy an Atheros chipset to replace the Intel Wireless one that came with it? I'd like to use vanilla Debian or Trisquel/Parabola/etc. with this.

3.) Anything I missed that would be a good upgrade at the same time?

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, just curious. I already opened it up and took out what I would be changing, along with redoing the thermal paste and just cleaning it out in general.

>I just got one used(?) for $600

That's for used. Brand new ones (in box, sealed, with warranty) are $900-1000.

>>57558221
That's not what I've heard about it. It dies because it over heats and the solder actually makes the chip disconnect from the PCB. The actual graphics chip is perfectly fine.
