Dual boot between arch Linux and Windows 10
>>
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Good. KolibriOS just stole Ville's work without even thanking him. They're the reason menuetos x64 is closed source. They got him buttblasted.
>>
Slackware
>>
>>57530595

Meh, who cares about who did what. KolibriOS looked pretty promising before it wore off. At least the real thing is still in development. Being closed source means that no one will fork it again and once more divide everything up, but it's still in need of community support. I'll keep watching their progress.

I came for the meme and desktop threads, stayed because I've now gotten used to it and because the aur is so damn comfy. I experimented with Ubuntu and liked how it has a gui for so many things, but in the other hand I've just gotten used to do everything from cli. I dunno dude, I'm probably staying because I like the whole thing
>>
>>57540082
You do know that all that stuff on *buntu with a GUI also has a CLI, right?
>>
>>57540082
I really appreciate your answer, because I'm in the complete opposite situation: I started with Ubuntu, but I feel this weird urge to change to Arch.

I don't know... I tried Arch a few times (installed with Antergos), but it seems to be really difficult for a noob like me.
Ubuntu has gui for many things, just like you said, so it's pretty comfy.

But I want to learn stuff, and if I stay with a comfortable distro, I'll never learn anything new.
On the other hand it's my fault, because I could learn Debian-based stuff on Ubuntu, too.

So basically I could have no eascape route on Arch: it would force me to learn.

It would be kinda pointless to switch to a normie friendly os now that I've gotten used to doing it the more direct way, while sacrificing the aur and the "It's all exactly how I want it to be and nothing else" thing. I mean I could also switch to debian I guess, but edge is more cutting edge and it never broke for me unlike all the meme cartoons (pic related, I loved these threads although they seem pretty much gone now)

>>57540182
I decided to switch from windows 7 to Linux when they introduced windows 8 and finally switched when Microsoft became such a dick with all the telemetry shit. I had a very pretty riced out 7 with lots of warm colors and wooden design, I've gotten pretty comfy with the way things work on there etc. so I was worried about what Linux might be.
I installed arch mainly because of the desktop threads as I said, because I wanted to be bleeding edge and because I liked the custom package managers (currently using aura fyi). It's been hard in the beginning, but I think I've learned a lot. I recommend to read about the commands in the excellent wiki and see what their possibilitys are. Also try to read stuff about the commandline and install zsh with oh-my-zsh and antigen, it's really worth it (works for Ubuntu too, btw)
So yeah, I wanted to show off to the /g/uys here like "hey, look at me, I can use this difficult thing" while also learning about linux (Or as I've started calling it, GNU plus linux :^) and having a comfy customized os.
The only complaint I've got right now is that compton won't move my browser windows from either Firefox, icecat or chromium lag-free while also blurring my translucent console windows. I can get you a screenfetch of my desktop too if you want me to
Cheers

Damn, Anon, you're the first person who could actually tell about his Arch experience in months.
Thanks for the info - it's really nice to hear about this stuff.

Yeah I think I'll try Arch.
I'm not sure about the install, but I'll definitely learn the commands 'n' shit.

> I can get you a screenfetch of my desktop too if you want me to

Sure, why not? :)

I just realized how much I really like arch btw, so let me correct myself. It's not just the aur, I've gotten used to the whole thing, I like the package manager and I don't really need a gui for everything anymore so there's no real reason to install it. I just never really thought about it. The only reason I could think of switching is not to scare normies away, but they don't notice it on my laptop so why would I?
>>
>>57540564
Hehh, you just answered my main question, then.
Ok, the circle is now complete.

I fear this discussion really made me to give Antergos another try.
Also now I know that Arch has many package manager (yes, I'm this new) - will I find this Aura in Pamac?

Fuck, I thought this distro jumping will end...

my second screen is slightly smaller than my left one, so it looks like the upper part of the wallpaper is broken. its not visible actually. also not going to pretend im a weeb or edgy, the computer name is main_desu because im a sarcastic piece of shit.

Aura is in the aur, i can recommend yaourt to begin with. i think the binaries are hosted on some gay ass french server existing only for that purpose. try searching it with whatever engine works for you.

Ok, I'll check it.
Why do you like Aura, by the way?

First of all, if you're this >>57540548 guy thanks for the wallpaper, i really appreciate it. My wallpaper is from firewatch, they've got 4 or something for different times of the day but i like orange/brown the best.
I like aura because its basically pacman with aur integration. the commands are the same except they added a whole bunch to get the aur up and running. I also like that its written in haskell because the language is a community effort and i want to support it. im learning c++, c# and python as my main profession and im planning to support an opens source project when im skilled enough. ill be gone soon because ive got evening lessons in half an hour, so if youve got anything left please ask it or i may be gone.

Dude, thanks for everything, I don't want to hold you up.
I'm going to use this info and reinstall Antergos.

Have a nice day, Anon!

No problem, i like giving others feedback on things i use. thanks for all the pretty wallpapers, ill use them on my phone i think. I've no experience with the antergos installer btw. so i cant help you with that. My first arch install about a year ago or something was just following the steps of a tutorial by antoun sawires on youtube so yeah. hopefully its working as well with the installer tool. Attached is my old win 7 background.

Good luck anon, i really enjoyed this :)

Aww yiss.
These things are damn near indestructible, and 'fast enough' to not need upgrading.

Also, still use standard RAM/SSD.

Arch user here.
Honestly I hate the AUR. It's really shitty and shit goes unmaintained for so long. It'd be much better to just grab the shit from upstream, but I guess sometimes it is hard to find where upstream is.
Arch is the only real binary rolling release distro, aside from Void which is just Arch with smaller repos and without systemd.
I have considered switching to Gentoo or Source Mage though. I don't want to deal with Slackware's dependency hell though.
