Is it bad that I hear a little electricity coming from my laptop charger? It's like a little noise that can be heard when pressed against your ear, however it is still noticeable in a quiet room. It's a Lenovo 170W 20V charger

>>57507076

AMD RX 460 = 100 or under
Nvidia GTX 1050 = 130 or higher

Are those ~30 bucks worth it? I know the 1050 is a bit faster but 30 bucks are 30 bucks, also I can get a 4GB RX 460 for about 110 dolla

Anyone ever had success trying pic related?

Basically, I'm in a residence where I can't access the router. I've got the SSH server working, and I can connect and set up tunnels. The only annoying part is connecting to the FTP etc server. It works from the SSH server but not from the laptop.

I'm using PuTTY and a tunnel with remote -> local port and I checkmarked "remote ports do the same" but no luck.
>>
>>57507628
definitely not bottlenecked. Consider getting a new GPU.
>>
>>57507611
You need to have networking set up right so the VM has its own address instead of sharing one with th host, port forwarded, preferably external other than 22. I have external 55555 forwarded to internal 22. So there's not continuous login attempts cluttering the logfiles. set up other ssh security stuff.

What's running on the VM? Could you not be doing it locally on your laptop with git and such?

>>57507611
Depends on what your emulating, but easiest is probably just to do a NAT and port forward.

Here is where you want to look in virtual box. You'll need to also make sure you port forward from your router to your host as well, so that you can reach it from internet, not just local network.

Why do people not like java here?
>>
>>57507698
I should also add that if you're behind a dynamic IP this will be more difficult obviously as the IP may change while you're out.
>>
>>57507657
i have Arch on the VM. I have a base model surface pro 3, with a 1.5 GHz i3 and 4GB of RAM... i could work from it but the other engineers don't trust windows.

I would just get a new laptop that's better, but i can't really justify the cost of getting something decent when I mostly work from home.
>>
>>57507705
Every program I've downloaded that uses java is a bloated pajeet piece of shit. I really have no hate for java in the abstract, but in reality it is bullshit.

It's probably okay for server side business logic, though. But it is haram for application code.

Every year I say to myself "this is surely the year VR becomes mainstream" and ever year I hold back from upgrading my PC anyway. Every year I've been proven right.

If I don't give two fucks about anything beyond 1080p on a primary monitor and another 1080p monitor to play videos and such on while I grind, is a 1070 the way to go - provided that VR doesn't in fact catch on next year?

>>
>>57507790
i should add that i've gotten everything up and running on my desktop in windows 10, so I'm aware that everything works, it's just that the other engineers would rather that everyone use linux when developing.

I have an old 5.1 system that I use as a 2.1 because I don't need the surround sound

I've had the subwoofer volume at 0 for months because of a rattling noise it produces and just now realized I've been going without one. It's pretty bulky and I'm trying to figure out a way to get rid of/replace it with something smaller as I'm not huge into music.
I'd prefer something that could use the speakers I have (as shit as they are, it could be cheaper).

Are the interfaces universal between systems? Meaning, could I just get a different subwoofer and plug my existing speakers in?
Is there even a market for very small subwoofers or at the least something to connect the speakers i have to my PC?
>>
>>57508205
It would take longer than a day to charge if shut off the whole time.
>>
>>57508272
The phone would be charged with a usb like any other phone, the solar part is for emergencies like those old calculators but stronger
>>
>>57508216
Get a pair of bookshelf speakers. You'll probably be satisfied without a subwoofer when you finally have woofers. They connect to an amp or receiver by bare wire, so no connection compatibility to worry about there. You need to have other connectivity for subwoofers since most are self-powered.
>>
>>57508282
Solar power banks do exist. For several years. Have you even looked?
>>
>>57508282
So like solar powered battery banks?

cell surface area versus cell draw etc. Maybe if phones had a barebones OS for literally emergency cellular activity only.
>>
>>57508205
A solar panel over a 6" phone would generate at best 3.5 watts, probably more in the realm of 2 or less, and add significant bulk to the phone.
>>
>>57508303
>>57508300
>>57508315
I think itd be infinite battery life if the sun waves are strong enough, but that's how my mind work
>>
>>57508322
Well it would require your phone to be face down so you couldn't use it while it was charging, and it would charge slower than normal usage would drain it, it would take up weight that could be used on a bigger battery, and you'd have to leave it in the sun to charge making it heat up and lower overall lifespan of your battery and other components, and add significant cost.
>>
>>57508322
>Sun waves strong enough
>Can literally kill a phone if left on a dash
>Solar panels efficiency reduces in heat exposure
>Battery efficiency reduces in heat exposure
>Phone efficiency reduces in heat exposure

It's a great concept, doesn't work though.

Thank you for replying.
I know Windows itself includes drivers, but.
What should I do if most of the drivers installed are "generic" drivers ?
should I install the manufacture drivers or use some driver finding software like speccy?
It's a Lenovo G50-80 laptop by the way.

Not sure, you can try turning it off. The important part is, how expensive is it? Do you have a backup one while it's off?

You can try pliers (the small ones, forgot what they were called at the moment) but I'm not sure about it.

Though, if the bug is inside the LCD screen from the back, it will be hard taking it apart just for a bug. Someone suggested online to wait for the bug to crawl higher and to squish it so it won't be noticeable.

Whichever ones are updated and bloat-free. But I think they will be the same. Though, windows updates will give you the regular ones. In the case of graphics drivers in most cases, windows update will fix it by installing the old one (they never update it) because if the update breaks it will download the old one and fix itself. You should always find updates if you want to consider performance. Like, a lot of people download the updated graphic card drives from the manufacturer website instead of the computer distributor website.

I just installed the USB 3.0 drivers, and the chipset since the internal HDD was mounted as removable media.

There are two drivers that are missing, I guess one is for the webcam and the other for the SD card reader, won't be bothered to install it.
And since the generic driver for the intel HD 5500 are working fine and outputting to both the HDMI and the VGA port I see no need to change that.

It's been a long while since I used windows so I forgot most of these stuff.

The laptop belongs to my sister, she bought it, and someone in the shop told her that "windows 7 doesn't need drivers to be installed", then came complaining that the USB 3.0 is slow.

>>57509460
My first instinct was a faulty power switch which turned out to be wrong.
Then I thought well my mobo was a few years old at that point so i thought that might be the source of the issue so I replaced it. I also did an RMA on my PSU just in case.
As I said before, neither of these things had any effect.

Additionally, my mobo doesn't have a speaker header which makes things much harder to diagnose.

My Note 10.1 (the 2012 model) suddenly locked up yesterday, and when I tried to reboot it, it was stuck at the Note 10.1 logo (not the boot animation, the one before it), and I can't go into recovery, because it shows a black screen.
I've tried to flash the recovery again using Heimdall and Odin (Heimdall wasn't able to flash the recovery, showed "libusb error -7 while reading packet", something along those lines after Beginning session, does that even when I try to print the PIT and trying to install another recovery, Odin just got stuck on Initializing) multiple times, waiting a few hours, and disassembling the device, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, reassembling and trying again.
What do, /g/? Is my tablet fucked?

I have a Gigabyte motherboard (http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4150#ov) with Realtek audio built in. After a fresh install of Windows 7 (and ubuntu), the built in audio does not work on either OS. Drivers are installed, and headphones/mic are detected when plugged in, but they just make no sound (when playing music etc, or using audio test).
Tried:
* Reinstalling/upgrading/downgrading drivers
* Plugging in to different ports
* Testing headphones/mic seperately
* External sound card (works, but need mic still)
* Enabling audio in BIOS
Any help appreciated

trying to assign arrays on php using the values from another array as its keys. for now, i'm using the code below to achive what i want, but since i use eval, it's pretty damn slow. this is the code i use to do it;

eval("\$result$kv = $value;");

the count() of $keys always changes on each loop so i can't use variable variables without guessing how many variable variables i should use. any ideas?

What I'd do is get a refurb laptop I can afford to replace at any time and not get stressed about it breaking when used around other people. You never know when a professor will forget your laptop's screen is not paper, and draw on it with a permanent marker. It happens.

And then I'd build a desktop I can expect to not be destroyed.

That laptop's CPU benchmarks worse than a desktop Xeon you can get for $30. Do you imagine a gaming laptop would enable you to be social with your games? Or that you could play them alone in public without feeling embarrassed/awkward/intrusive? Maybe you could, idk.

How's AMD performance doing these days? A12 vs a 6th gen i5 maybe even an i7 is what I'm eyeballing. Of course, the AMD HP laptops tend to be cheaper. Are they worth it?

Arch is not for work. It's for those without work to do to feel like they're working while putting in less effort than required by a video game.

Just realized yesterday my new cpu i7 6700k was running hot, downloaded asus, intel extreme tuning utility to test it. During stress test it hit 97 degrees celsius after 1 minute.
Used the benchmark test and it went too 100 c pretty fast.
Found out the problem was my cpu fan being loose, i fixed it and it works perfect now.

My question is, Have i damaged my cpu, or shortened it's life span?

Very stupid question.
I inherited an old desktop, was built in 2012 or something.
And it's very slow mostly because of it's celeron processor.
Anyway question is, Can the cpu be replaced, or to be more precise do I need to replace the motherboard as well because new mobos have different sockets or something?
>>
>>57512990
You can replace the cpu, maybe not one from 2016, but probably a better one. The motherboard probably has information on it online-find out what motherboard it is (you can use speccy to find the motherboard or cpu). Look up the socket type of the motherboard, find information on what the maximum supported cpu is for the motherboard (just because the socket is the same doesn't mean it will support it, might need a bios update).

That will be very hard to find.
The mobo is gigabyte I think will need to look for the socket type and maximum CPU that support it.
The RAM is DDR3 though.
Will it be a good idea then to replace the mobo and the CPU?

>>
>>57513094
>>57512990
Google the model code for a manual (probably still on Gigabit's website). It'll tell you what CPU's it'll take, and what memory configurations are acceptable with them.

It won't help very much though - you'll have to replace the motherboard for a real upgrade. Combined with more RAM, it'll maybe be enough to smooth out Windows a bit, but you won't be able to run any new games or such.

PCI express 1x is just a shortest version of PCIe. The connector size (x1 x4 x8 x16) does not matter as long as it can fit in the slot physically, and the generation (PCIe 1.0 or 2.0 or 3.0) does not matter either since the motherboard and the expansion card will connect using the highest common speed available.

In example a PCIe 2.0 x1 Network card can be placed on a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot and it will run on 2.0 speed.

Networking for retards question:

So, my understanding is that essentially a user is on two networks, a local one (which i guess can be subdivided from there) and a global one. As such you get an ip address for each. The internet only sees the ip address of the network you're on connecting to the web. This is why my friend and I on the same network appear to have the same ip address to the rest of the world (like say if we both went on ip chicken). Do differentiate my friend and I from there, our local ip addresses on the network are used (the address I have if I type the command ip addr).

So barring me saying something stupidly wrong above, It leads to a conclusion that confuses me. Mainly the application of ports. As I understand, ports is the way to direct traffic coming in from the internet and tell it where to go on the local network. So If I set up ssh on a computer, I need to also open a port on my router and point it to that computers local address. My question is, if this is also true, then how to normal web browsers send information to the right location on a network without a port of some kind pointing to a particular address on the network? How does an incoming packet know which computer to go to on the local network?

Also, my understanding of networking is shit in general, so if anyone wants to step in and correct any misconception i made in general above, please be my guest.

Its a utility that assesses the health of the drive. My guess is either your drive failed or it was corrupted somehow. If its corrupted then you're going to learn how to restore data. If the drive is dead then you're going to have to buy a new one.

If your windows is still working, go to this link

the backup is a secondary issue. I can't do it. When the computer does work I try and the backup stops after 30 seconds. I check the error and google it and try and fix it then retry backup but its just error after error after error. And I am using an external drive.

I was wondering what the F8 option "last known good configuration (advanced)" did. Like say the last known good config was a month ago. Will it still load my files and documents that were saved after that? So then I could make a backup of everything until now
>>
You won't believe this, but I ACCDIENTALLY DELETED MY HOME FOLDER!

Fortunately I saved most of the files on my external hard drive, but it's not up-to-date.

Hi, if I use a Bluetooth speaker in the shower without pouring water on it, is there still a risk of it being damaged by steam ?

Bonus question : Why does it take ages for images to load on 4chan ?Sometimes they also just won't load…
>>
>>57514713
precision : the speaker is not directly in the shower but rather in the bathroom
>>
>>57514713
1. It'll be fine.
2. Sometimes servers are slow. If they're not loading at all it's a bug, it sometimes happens to me. I usually browse incognito, so ending the incognito session and starting a new one works out for me. Otherwise I guess you have to clear cookies.

>>
>>57514776
I do the same in my bathroom with my speakers (had them for 2 years) and they're fine. Wouldn't advise bringing it in the shower though.
>>
>>57514776
Or if you're really not sure, just leave the speakers where you'd leave them usually and turn the shower on.
If you notice that there's lots of water condensing on them then maybe you have a reason to be worried. Otherwise you should be fine.

I need recommendations for wireless adapters for my Desktop. Using a LAN connection is out of the question so it needs to be wireless. Can anyone recommend me some good adapters? My connection wired is roughly 120Mbps down and 11Mbps up, so I'd like for it to be as close to that as possible. My desktop is about 20-30ft. from my router. I got an old ladys computer to repair.
It's a fairly old computer that only even got to the windows loading screen 1 out of 10 boots.

I told her that it's dying of old age and that I can try to save as much data as possible from her hdd.

Here's the thing: when I insert the hdd into my computer and boot up my own windows I get one of those non-paged bluescreens with ntfs.sys as the error message.

This means that the ntfs filesystem is corrupted right?
Is booting into linux to run ntfsfix the right way of proceeding here?

what are some reputable, non-biased, trustworthy tech hardware review sites?
>>
>>57515102
Your options are a little bit more specific now. I would ensure the integrity of the partitions. GPT partition schemes will help with this, but if you already used chkdsk then I guess the partitions are ok. In that case it depends upon the file system you have on the partition with missing data and on a few other generic data recovery tools specific to your OS. I'm afraid that's pretty much all I know.

Any particular symptom or action that caused this?

I've been using Sid for many years (not testing) for my desktop. But you will run into problems occasionally, especially if you try Testing or Unstable on heavier desktops. Check Debian DOSE tools before upgrading, and make backups of /home and /boot every once in a while.

There's also #debian-next support on OFTC IRC.

Are trace/low (non-hazardous unless ingested) levels of radiation bad for typical desktop computer components, flash drives, monitors, or the like?

Just about everything in RL can have trace/low levels of radiation. it part of nature and how electrons/atoms move.
