Then, and most importantly, you will need a good VHS deck. S-VHS decks are guaranteed to work well, but they're getting harder to find nowadays, look around Goodwill since odds your VHS deck is pure shit
You also want a TBC, Time Base Corrector, this is usually pro equipment and isn't easy or cheap to find, but some of those old DVD/VHS combos had circuitry that had a line TBC, which is like a half assed TBC but works (there's two tipes, line TBC's which are consumer tier and somewhat available, and full frame TBC's which are expensive/pro and sometimes harder to find)
The single site that still holds good info on this is digitalfaq, Doom9 analog people moved on years ago and other forums are dead, they also do great captures but I don't know if they still do them or how expensive it is

She doesn't do much with it but.. she has a Nexus4 now and the battery drains so fast just on stand by. The battery is getting old, and it was never that good. It takes forever to charge.

She just wants something with a 5.0-5.5" screen that's not too heavy, doesn't nessisarily need to be charged every day.

Other than the stupid name and the packaged software, it seems like it has an efficient CPU, big battery, nice screen. And it's only $150.
