I was downloading an article to read, read it and then the kindle froze, so I restarted it and got this

I haven't owned a Kindle, but is it really a superior reading device than, say, a common 7" tablet with an eBook reader app installed in it?

I've used both the original and the Paperwhite with backlighting, and for plain text books they're far better than a tablet. If you're reading something with any kind of visuals a tablet would be better, but for simply reading text on a page they're perfect, plus the battery life is great.

I jailbroke mine like 6 months ago and been in plane mode ever since. Should I be able to update without losing my stuff?

Mines been in airplane mode since I bought the thing over a year ago. No ads, no updates. Not even going to bother jailbreaking it, no need.
