What exactly do you want to create?

For beginners I recommend this book, it will guide you through the fundamental Algorithms used in "AI" systems. You don't really need any previous experience in algorithms or even programming to get it.

All the major algorithms are crap or slow or both.
Most are based on outdated crap from the 1950s based on research done in 1943.
Newer algorithms are slower still or rely on genetic algorithms to turn them from useless into marginally-usable via heavy tweaking.
The math is horrendous and scares away most programmers.
New century, new model.
We're developing something new.
