WTF happened to Tox?
Did it use RSA for everything?

Use wire

nah, I'm writing my own.
I'm using AES for encryption, fuck RSA.
I will still use RSA for identification, though.
I'm still thinking of a way to have a distributed db of IDs without having to resort to something like a block-chain.

any ideas?

You dummy. You obviously don't know enough about crypto to even implement anything worthwhile...
They used AES... Anything that isn't symmetric is far too slow to be used for voice/video.
If you can tell me which cipher would be best used for this type of data, I'll cut you some slack. Until then, I'll just assume anything you build will be insecure or not usable.

A distributed db of IDs without having them all stored is impossible. You can't create practical data without it existing in the first place.
If you could some how generate these IDs deterministically like a PRNG, then it would work.
